A mod for ARMA II has recently made ARMA one of the most bought games on steam and other PC game stores 3 years after it's pretty lacklustre release. That mod is called "Day Z" and it represents what many gamers (including myself) have been searching for in zombie games for years.

You spawn in a gigantic persistent world complete with zombies and 50 other players with a 24 hour day/night cycle. If you change servers/log out when you join a server again you will appear where you last were with all your items. Scrounge items, kill animals for food, drink water, bandage your wounds, conserve ammo and make a decision to team up with other players, double cross them or hunt them to take their gear.

You know a game is realistic when if you haven't found a compass you look up at the night sky to find North and voice/text chat can only be heard by those nearby (if chat is set to that feature) and gives away your position.

EDIT: The game has exploded and servers are constantly full all over the globe. Aussie ones are particularly overflowing and wait times can be > 1 hour because there are so few servers. With the deaths of other bigfooty game servers (correct call killing them) is there a possible opening for a bigfooty funded server(s) for this mod? It isn't showing any signs of slowing and the population is continuing to skyrocket.

Re: Day Z - Most amazing zombie survival game ever.

over 35,000 people playing this game now, it's awesome reading the stories of all the shit that happens

if only certain people would live up to their promise and actually play with me

----

we should make a time for all of us to jump on and play so we can play together in a group, anyone keen?

Re: Day Z - Most amazing zombie survival game ever.

I watched the GiantBomb guys play through a bit of Day Z. They had a ton of trouble getting into servers, with them crashing a lot and the game just being quite unresponsive and not very good at relaying information.

Not honestly worth watching unless you love the GiantBomb guys though, frustrating if you just want to see gameplay.

But I was loving the idea. The general concept where you have to fight for survival and when coming across another actual human that there'd be this moment where you have no idea if they're going to shoot you/loot you or not is brilliant and rife for a real polished version of it to be taken up on. Could see some more rudimentary missions or objectives placed throughout the worlds to, just to offer up a real reason to continue.

It's basically The Walking Dead and The Road in game form (even though we just had a Walking Dead game released).

Apparently this series is a fairly good watch:

This vid is also said to be quite awesome:

As for a server, I can give Chief a PM. Trying to get him to chip in on the BF3 PS3 server but not sure if that'll happen. If there's enough people interested in this, I think we could give it a real shake, but we'd need to have a good amount of interest and guaranteed players.

Re: Day Z - Most amazing zombie survival game ever.

servers are arond $400ea per 40 slot a month, i dobt chief will pay that much for a server
Wouldn't need close to 40 players.

Are the server hosts based on the Arma 2 game?

There's always possibility of people chipping in themselves.

the idea of the servers is to get as many people as possible on, a lot of servers are upgrading to 60 slot now

But if it were to be a BigFooty server then the server wouldn't be for trolls to come on just to troll (the Minecraft server had this problem for a little bit). Would make for a terrible experience.

It would be about the BigFooty guys playing with other BigFooty guys and making the experience worth it for that.

but you cant have a bigfooty server, there are no "private servers", servers are donated to rocket and theyr hosted on the main server so each server is syncd with one another

Re: Day Z - Most amazing zombie survival game ever.

I think the current server shortage would attract a large number of players who would previously not be bigfooty users, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. There is very little room for griefing in the game as technically it is one of the options open for players. I.e. if you decide to go down the route of player killing you are given a different skin and practically forced out into the wilds as you will be shot on sight by any other player in the game. You are an outcast and easily recognisable as one. Other players do not lose humanity points for killing you either, so being a dick in game can turn you into fodder for other players.

In minecraft griefing is a terrible thing, but in this game it is a different playstyle with powerful consequences if you decide to go down that path.

Re: Day Z - Most amazing zombie survival game ever.

theres some awesome easter egg, someone found a radio and it broadcasts morse code from a certain area saying "
We are no longer alive STOP This message will play every hour if operators are no longer responsive STOPMESSAGE

Unable to quarantine subject change STOPMESSAGE"

pretty cool, adds to the spookyness of the game

we should defs try to get a group going on an aussie server though, best time to do this is either during the day when the servers arent packed and its actually daytime in the server or play on an american server at midnight-1am our time when its day time over there

Re: Day Z - Most amazing zombie survival game ever.

All shooting etc is done client side so playing on international servers has little effect on play!

Re: Day Z - Most amazing zombie survival game ever.

I have been waiting for this to appear here. I didn't want to do it myself because I'd spend far too long talking about how ridiculously fun it is.

It epitomises the zombie genre. This isn't about getting your face eaten by the undead, it is about how humans behave when society fails.

This mod is going to be massive and will be the start of truly player driven gameplay.

I could crap on for hours telling stories but I can't, my hunting rifle only has two rounds left and I'm down to a tin of baked beans and a can of coke. If shit gets worse I may have to resort to murdering someone for their gear.

Holy freakin' shit! This game looks epic in the true sense of the word. Will be getting this ASAP and if my PC isn't good enough to run it, looks like it's upgrade time. Seriously can't wait to get started and could imagine the fun a BF crew could have with this - I want in.

Another great video showing what the game is all about, the ending of the vid is insane. Love it.

Team up or die. Rocket is trying to increase the need for teamwork in order to accomplish anything.

I came across a random guy in the woods outside of town and helped him go in and get a friend. Problem was he aggro'd so many zombies that I ran out of ammo pretty fast. Quickly realised being with these guys was dangerous as hell and slowly moved away from them.

Luckily I came across two dead players on the road and looted a good 6 Mags off of them so I'm set for a little bit for now.

It crashed. Played it solo a bit and honestly I think it's very hard to go solo until you have good gear. Teamwork/messing around on skype while playing seems to be the way to go.

I'm terrible with technology. Is this game something you need to pay for or do you download it for free? I'm looking on the website and when I click on "download dayz" it gives me a page with link to different files. What do I do?

You need to download the game Arma II as it's a mod for that game.

Not sure how to install the mod and what not though.... lol

You also need the 'Operation Arrowhead' expansion pack installed.

Installing the mod is real easy though. Google it and you will find pretty basic instructions.
