A) he had a wedding to attend in queensland
B) when does VFL pre season start anyway?

Technically, the wildcard round games are not finals. it just gives you an extra obstacle to win that all elusive first finals game in however many aeons it's been now.
The two matchups will count as official finals, meaning coaches votes towards the Gary Ayres Medal will count and should Essendon win one of those Wildcard fixtures, their drought will be broken.

If you finish 7th-10th you might as well have wildcard round at the pub all the ****n good it'll do to your flag chances

Andrew Raines has an interesting place in the AFL trivia books - at present he is the last player to debut before Essendon's last finals win in the 2004 Elimination Final over Melbourne. Raines, then aged 18, made his debut for Richmond against Sydney in Round 22 2004, the Tigers consigned to the wooden spoon courtesy of a 64-point thrashing from the Swans. His debut game in the last game of the season made him the 11,381st player in the AFL/VFL.

Ten years have now gone by since Raines last match in 2015 for the Gold Coast Suns (his third club after the Richmond Tigers and Brisbane Lions, 129 games in 12 seasons), and he will turn 40 early next year. In 21 years since Raines debut late in 2004 as player 11,381, a further 1,891 players have debuted into an AFL where Essendon has not won a finals match, the most recent 19-year-old Lucca Grego whose sole appearance for the West Coast Eagles against the Sydney Swans in the final round of 2025 to become player 13,272. At the time of Andrew Raines debut for Richmond and Essendon's last finals win Grego was still nearly 2 years away from being born.

In terms of percentages, 14.25% of all players to have played in the AFL have done so after Essendon's last finals victory.

It will be 7903 days next Anzac Day.

Collingwood Cheer Squad banner makers, you know what you need to do
Which means that July 31 marks 8000 days. They're playing Adelaide that weekend, which seems appropriate - by then, the combined number of days without a finals win between the 2 participating clubs will be well over 11000 days.
