In terms of games played, Essendon have now played 465 matches since their last finals win in the 2004 Elimination Final over Melbourne. Counting back the same number of games, and we reach the Round 4 1985 match between Essendon and Collingwood at Windy Hill, won by the Bombers by 4-points on 20th April 1985. In the Magpies team that day was the 2004 premiership winning coach in Mark Williams; and playing for Essendon was the brother of opposing Melbourne coach Neale Daniher in Terry Daniher and Mark 'Bomber' Thomson, who in the 2004 semi-final would coach the Geelong Cats to victory over Essendon, the first of Essendon's 7 finals losses since then. Another member of Essendon's Round 4 1985 team was Tim Watson, who earlier that year became a father to son Jobe, who played in this Bombers 2004 team.

Of course Essendon's streak of games played without winning a final won't end at 465 matches, the earliest the Bombers can end it is 478 matches as they will obviously need to play 23 regular season games next year. Given how badly things went for the Bombers in 2025 and that they haven't made the finals since 2021 it is hard to see them making the finals in 2026 much less winning one, but regardless counting back 478 matches from the 2004 Elimination Final it will take us to a match between Fitzroy and Essendon at the Junction Oval in Round 6 1984, a high scoring game in which the Bombers defeated the Lions by 51 points. In the Bombers team that day was a promising 18-year-old rookie named Mark Harvey playing his third senior game.

The melts if we won a final from 10th would be delicious :)

My good oil has * finishing 16th (just above Richbroke and Worst Coast.

I am putting an end to betting on the Bay, but if I didn't, I would make something really outlandish if Essingtin finished 10th or above next season

Also I keep telling everyone the AFL is turning to an American style league, this wildcard weekend has been a stable of the MLB and NFL for years and the NBA recently introduced something similar with the play in tournament.

I hate this concept btw of wildcard weekend, drags the season on endlessly and rewards mediocrity.

Time Outs and coaches challenges will happen next, mark my words

This is the future CEO of the AFL

Based on the reliability of your oil I am quite happy with this prediction :)

Elmo predicted us to finish 16.

It’s in the bank m7

All that matters is that 2026 will be the 5th year in a row Carlton will finish above Essingtin on the ladder.

Plus we will get a lot more prime time tv games than Essingtin who are apparently getting a lot more Fox Footy/Kayo games next season :)

Watching Carlon lose to the tuggers in prime time is a win for everyone m7

Apparently we have lost the MCG opener to Collingwood v St Kilda (doesn't bother me tbh, it was probably time for a change)
