After yesterday's little episode about Valentine's Day, I've decided to institute an irregular series entitled "DCFC Goes Off Tap". Needless to say, it entails yours truly coming in off the long run about the various evils of the world.

Today's episode is entitled: Mobile Phones

************************************************

Walking from work to Flinders Street yesterday, I engaged in a bit of people watching. And every second person either had a mobile jammed in their ear, or even worse, was plugging away at the keypad sending one of those annoying text messages.

These insidious little contraptions, a luxury item only five years or so ago, are now so ubiquitous that I am practically a social outcast for not having one. I am constantly asked "What's your mobile number?" The response "I don't have one" earns me looks that range from confusion, through pity to outright incredulousness.

This question invariably follows: "Why haven't you got one?" And the answer is that I don't need one. And neither do you.

Sure, there are people that need, or at least are immeasurably assisted, by having a mobile phone. People who travel constantly for work, or work on call, people who are required to be in constant communication with someone else, or sick or pregnant patients who can call on assistance whenever and wherever required. I understand and appreciate that mobile phones are useful for these people.

But what about you? Do you need a mobile phone? Of course not. So why have you got one?

They're annoying - all of those "cool" ring tones are irritating, the constant yakking by people on the train to people they've just seen or are just about to see is constant and invasive, and worst of all, those stupid bloody text messages.

Lord knows that the language is in enough trouble already, without it being constantly corrupted by illiterate phone jabbers punching stupid, hackneyed abbreviations into their slave phones. Nothing is safe from the texters, who seemingly delight in defecating all over the language with their "C U Laters", "Luvs" and numerous other abominations.

Seriously, what is the point of all this texting? You're limited to saying only so much in them, and also limited by the constraints of the written word. One text invariably provokes another from the recipient, so there are at least two phone calls being made, so you're not even saving money by texting rather than calling in the end.

The only reason that text messages exist is to make truckloads of money for the communication companies. You wanna text some one? Send an email.

And the immediacy of mobile phones infuriates me as well. Is it so bad to be out of contact with the rest of the world for one minute? Enjoy your freedom, don't be enslaved by the phone!

Finally, kids and mobiles - just plain dumb. Sure, give them the phone with the limited access and limited numbers so they can call you in an emergency, but the widespread use of mobiles by teens and even pre-teens these days is astonishing, and astonishingly expensive. And for what? So Bree can text Kayla to tell her that Ashley overhead Brandon tell Cheyne that Jack likes Renee, even though he's been going with Amy? Well pardon me, but who gives a F**K?!

Mobiles - burn them all.

I thank you.

Now this will clear allot up for me DCFC
How old are you??

In my opinions the mobile fone is one of the greatest advancement (I say advancement as there was new concepts here), in the past century.
Believe it or not in the future and the past the fastest growing and most important action/buisiness we have in this life is communication.
How can any device that revolutionalizes this action be considered a bad thing.

The mobile phones have brought a number of things.

People can always be contacted in the case of emergency or even to catch up.
Split second can be made with both parties able to have imput due to the can be contacted imdediately
Friendships are strengthened due to in times of need others can be contacted.

You notice the same thing being mentioned here over and over.
CONTACT.
The ability to STAY IN CONTACT is a great gift.

You have a problem with ring tones:Dont download them
Victimised for not having one:Your problem
Constantly getting disturbed:Turn your damn phone off

Text messages put allot that cant be said into words which is far easier to be communicated. It is believe it or not fun and also cheaper than calls.

Here is an example.
I have to talk from personal experience.
The best part about have my mobile is knowing that all my mates have one too.
Last moment change of plans can be communicated easily.
I can find them in meat rooms at clubs and pubs.
I dont have to wait around for them to get home if I wont to do somthing.

If your having problems using them just tell the people at this good board and we will help you.

I use mine a lot on weekends to arrange my social life, and also to keep up to date with other sporting events I'm not attending, while sending progress scores to people not at what I'm watching.
I don't need it most of the time, but it's nice to have it. And it rings to the tune of "Don't Worry Be Happy" at the moment, although with the football season coming up I'll be resetting it to "See the Bombers Fly Up" soon.

LOL, sure is :p
Nah..I don't use it much, don't wanna be a greasy girl :D

What about mobiles for if ever your house burns down, hence the house phone doesn't work and you have no way of contacting family members to tell them? Might be useful then
And I know you could go next door...but still they aren't always there in an emergency.
