Is this about one of the worst game show concepts on TV? Absolutely no skill or knowledge involved, just guesswork. Oh, and the host is such a tool - why does he act like a 5 year old and act all cheery and everyone's buddy?

Another thing I've noticed is when the people with the cases guess the right amount of money in them. Why do people who have to guess out of 12 cases, get the same prize amount as those who guess out of say, 4 or 5? It should be higher the less chance it is to get right.

Its gambling. The drama comes from weighing the odds and working out the best option. Do you take the offer given or do you risk it all for a better payout.

i must admit, i am really enjoying the GD rage against shit tv today.

although i gotta put my hand up when i was living in bathurst one of the local pubs used to do a daily thing were everyone would chuck $2 in and whoever got the $0.50 case got all the money. if we didn't fill all the cases and no one got the $0.50 case it would jackpot to the next day. wasn't a bad idea actually. i only went there every couple of weeks. the most i saw someone win was ~$150.

i wonder if you've ever seen the UK version. When it comes to doing the bank offer part, the host picks up a telephone and has a phone conversation and then the offer is made.

usually he has some sort of conversation with them rather than just silence. presumably he is just talking to himself or perhaps an operator who gives him the offer than tells him to **** off and get a real job. i'm not really sure who thought he could go through that scene probably 1000 times a year and still keep it even remotely interesting because i'm pretty sure it lost its interest on the first time.

also, how far can anyone last through this piece of television cringe? if you got to the 1 minute mark i'll send you 3 zimbabwean dollars.

Mathematically, you should always refuse the deal. Unless you have some loam sharks demanding a specific amount of money from you and you receive that as an offer.

Id love to get on the show just to punch O Keefs fat head.

i guess that's the crux of it. the offer is always under the odds, but you (the vast majority of people anyway) will only find yourself in a position to get this offer once which is a huge counterbalance to playing the correct statistical odds.

It would be much more dramatic as an annual 12 part series where they spend a lot of time casting and only pick people who desperately need the money for life saving surgery, avoiding bankruptcy, keeping their kneecaps, etc.

Put their sick child, aggrieved wife, standover man and so on in the case-holding audience. Now that's entertainment.

I used to love it, especially when it was $1,000,000 prize.
But O'Keefe just started to go over the top. Havn't watched in about 5 or 6 years now.

Great post Thrawn - and the whole show is based on the game going for 20 odd minutes. No one can say deal to the first offer or the game ends too quickly.

And don't get me started on Andrew O'Keeffe.

No wonder Eddie's Hot Seat is actually beat DOND in the ratings.

Meh, I'm not looking for a Camus existential question time at 5pm - I sort of like having a dumbass shlub show sometimes. It really is okay to like something that is a bit of fluff.

Having said that, the host has a very insincere laugh which I do not like.

And it is one of my pet hates, and something that I just cannot get past, the fact that the people who guess the correct amount in their case when there are 20 left, get the same $500 as the person who guesses correctly when there are 3. This is not right.

To summarise: "Meh".

I think it was $2 million and on once a week
yeah, then it went to the $1M for a year or two before going to $250K

Well, I think.

For a show that has 'no skill', people make a **** tonne of mistakes on it

your a poker player though so you'd always be playing the percentages, which means pretty much never taking the deal. as said above though the spanner is you're highly unlikely to be in a position where you choose between a guaranteed 20k or a 50/50 chance of 2k or 60k... and it does (and it should) skew what the correct play is because it being one-off situation will mean it brings into play external factors.

I went to a recording last week. They recorded five episodes.

The first bloke was a Photographer named Adrian who seemed like a fairly likeable bloke. He was doing quite well and ended up leaving with fifty cents. I would have been sorry for him, if only he wasn't such a fool. He attended with his cousin and, instead of doing what 99% of contestants do and leave their friend/family member/colleague until the very end, he chose to open up his cousin's case with about seven cases yet to be open. He was asked twice if he is sure he wants to open his cousin's case. He didn't listen to the audience, he didn't listen to Andrew O'Keefe, and when the case was opened, $200,000 appeared. I felt like kicking some sense into him.

Another bloke was a Fireman who attended with his mate and colleague. It actually felt like the spotlight was more on the mate, because Andrew O'Keefe couldn't stop chatting to the mate about his mustache. It's an impressive mustache without being outstanding, but he revealed he is going to New Orleans in September to compete in the World Beard and Mustache Championships. Apparently there are eighteen different categories you can enter in, and Andrew spent plenty of time thinking of creative beards and mustaches you could grow. I'm not sure how much air time it will all receive, but I feel there will be plenty of editing. Anyway, they walked away with $50k between them, which they are going to use to travel around Iceland and USA to see their favourite bands perform live.

The fourth episode they recorded was our block (block #6). A bloke named Damo, whose looking to open his Lawn Mowing business, had a chance to win $200,000. He attended the show with his mother, who was standing next to me on the podium. He walked away with $15,000, and his Mum received $5,000 for a correct Mega Guess. My sister was fortunate enough to correctly guess she had $200,000 in her case, and she walked away with $500 for her troubles.

The fifth and final episode shot was the strangest episode you are likely to see. We're not even sure whether or not it will go to air. If it does, there will need to be a hell of a lot of editing. The chick's name is Neesha who is a very strange cookie. She told Andrew to piss off at one stage. She also drank from her bottled water, and then proceeded to throw the bottle into the audience. She kept demanding to "bang" each case. "I will bang case 18 now... I would like to bang case 11... Bang this, bang that." She did a weird little dance every time she chose a case with a low value. Her friend was actually very good value, often struggling to complete a sentence. At one stage Neesha was going to choose briefcase #12, but her friend said, "No! Not that one. Save that one til later. I think we should save it for later." Neesha listened to her friend, and chose another case. Case #12 ended up having the $200,000. They walked away with $36,000 between them in the end.

Andrew O'Keefe is actually quite intelligent and very witty. He comes up with some clever lines on the spot.
