Wow that happened suddenly. I heard he was diagnosed with cancer but to happen so quickly it must have been very agressive.

Very sad for someone so young. My heart goes out to his family.

Thats the thing with lung cancer. The disease can be very advanced by the time it is diagnosed. By that time it is often well too late.

RIP Dean

Pretty nasty couple of years to go out on but I'm guessing the family are thankful it was quick.
Three months from diagnosis to death.
Crushing and merciful at the same time.
Suffered as an AFL scapegoat(IMHO) and never dobbed.
Death doesn't miss anyone but it's way too young, leaves family behind and he did seem a genuinely solid citizen and footy devotee.

It always struck me that his equanimity seemed at odds to the stress and pressure of his time as Melbourne's senior coach.
Just take a look at the petulant displays of coaches like the Scotts, Buckley,Clarkson and Hardwick in the coaches box .

Dean was a genuine, likeable and gentle man.

I heard of a few total non-smokers getting unlucky, Sean Wight was one iirc.
A lot of non smokers contract it. It's indiscriminate in its bastardry, and close to my heart (lost mum to lung cancer last August).
