Please don't feel as if you have to take the whole weight of the loss upon your shoulders; it wasn't your fault.

The last thing this team needs is a drop in confidence on your behalf, which has been built rather conveniently over the past few weeks. The team and you cannot afford it.

Well said.

The boy played really well, showed great courage and the signs are great for him.

As hard as it no doubt is, hopefully he's not dwelling on the kick.

He played fantastic. he can hold his head high after his performance on the weekend. Well Done Matty!

Spot on GC,

Egan's effort on Sat was good,he is brave with his over head marking. With a bit of work on his non prefered side with hand and foot he may will be more than just a third tall option.
The kick after the siren was not a poor effort.Watching it again on Foxtel he took the ball inside 50 yet he seemed to kick the ball from a lot futher than that out, probably just to ensure that he got the ball away.He may never have to face that situation again but he may have to practice shooting for goal a bit , one never knows when the mix may require it.
Good try Matty. To present and want the ball in that situation says more about you than the missing of the shot

Thompson said he knew Egan wouldnt make it, which is a fair call but a bit harsh, u mst have faith in your players.
Not Eans fault, and no-one can say it was. Kingsly and Ablett Jnr twice missed in the last 5 minutes so no-one can balme egan. He is turning into a very good quiet achiever. You never hear about him, but he does a great job

That kick took the superficial gloss off what was probably Egan's best AFL game. Hope he only looks at and remembers only the first 3.9 quarters of the match review tape.

Watch out St Kilda (and any other talented tall forward lines) when we can get Scarlett, Harley, Egan and Mooney all fit and firing and playing in the backline.

Likewise, no one should be able to break down the game to itty-bitty moments and resume comments starting with "if".

What we served up as a whole was crap.

I don't think it was harsh. If he said he thought Megan was a chance that would make Megan feel like he was to blame.
i hadnt thought of that.
i hope he jsut doesnt lose any confidence from this. He has been in out top 10 players in the last month or so i believe

Yep I thought Egan was terrific today, by far his most impressive display thus far. By the way The Age referred to him yesterday as "Brad Egan" - good to see journalists are as accurate as ever. Unfortunately for our backline though, Jarad Rooke was there, and thanks to his supreme incompetence, Melbourne's only dangerous forward won the game for them. To think I actually thought that clown had improved too. Silly me.

He did everything right in going back for the kick. It showed confidence in his own game.

It is ironic that the Geelong backline players are the only ones confident in taking set shots for goal without looking to palm it off.

Why drag St. Kilda into this? Isn't this a positive post about Geelong's fortunes?

ANyway, while we're pn the subject. In his 3-4 game, a young Nick Dal Santo had an after the siren shot at goal from outside 50m with the saints needing any score to win but alas he did not make it... he still turned out pretty gppd though heh!!!
Nah Egan's a good player and it won't bring him down.

I did find it a bit disturbing that ur coach said he had no expectation in Egan to kick a goal though. "Hey kid, I have no faith in you". Strange.

Rooke has improved this year, but on Saturday he was simply outclassed. He is simply not good enough to shut down a player such as Robertson, and he may never be that good. Robertson has been sensational this year and will probably be in the AA team, Rooke is a solid defender who does well on average flankers. Robertson is not an average flanker, his high leaping style make him very hard to beat and he requires a top notch defender to shut him down. Had Ottens not been injured, I'm sure Mooney would've gone to Neitz and Scarlett to Robertson as Rooke is simply not good enough for that type of player. It's like when he had to play on Pavlich, he was never going to beat him, but he gives his all each week and on most HFF that's good enough because it means he can beat them. I think if we weren't so short on defenders, Rooke would probably spend more time in the forward line and this may well be a good position for him, as his courage at the ball and tackling would add some much needed agro to the forward line. You can't expect too much from players, Rooke gives his all and was simply beaten by a far more talented player.

As for Egan, very impressive. I think in a couple of years he will be a very good key defender.

Good post, but we'll have to agree to disagree. Fact is Robertson is a half forward (and a very good one) and Rooke is a half back. If he wants to make it as a footballer those are the players he has to be able to hold. He's been destroyed twice in the last 3 weeks and it's pretty much been the difference. Josh Hunt has improved to the point he shuts defenders down as well as get possessions. Rooke hasn't.

This is where we are nowhere near demanding enough. Opposition teams won't go easy on him - why should we? No doubt he'll keep his spot though, and whoever plays on him for West Coast will kill him. But because he's having a go we have to tolerate it. It will cost us games, as it did on Saturday. And we're meant to pat him on the back and say "well played". No way.
