I went to yesterdays game and it had proven one thing....

We can not Defend for S**t.

Obviously we can't blame the youngsters because we had 3 debutantes who all tried their hardest, otherwise it was just plain Laziness and Selfishness, our players just won't play for each other, they played as individuals last night and it made my blood boil knowing that they were only playing for a spot in next weeks team (2 weeks:p).

These guys are the one's that were plain selfish last night:

Monfries (Just plain selfish)
Stanton (He's a disgrace:mad:, always plays for himself)
Slattery (Always trying to be the hero:confused:)

These 3 must be dropped next week if we 'want' to play and develop as a team, they only play for themselves, just so that they can get a spot in the team for the round ahead.

Just by looking at the score we know what we're doing right and what we're doing wrong. Its obvious that we can score big numbers with our new game style (BTW, I love it), then again its obvious that we are just plain bloody Lazy when it comes to defending. (For example. there was always at least 3 metres of space between our defenders opponents last night and Port just took easy advantage of it, especially Motlop, 7 goals, WTF.)

I'll give Courtney Johns some credit here, he never gave up once last night and it's gonna get him a spot in our next game against Sydney, he ran as hard as he could and never gave up (either did Mal), he even got a few clearences which shows some positives to his game.

In the end, we can prove that we can be a very attacking side, but I am deeply hoping that Matty Knights and whoever our Defencive coach is will teach our players (Especially our Midfielders) over the break, how to defend when the opposition have the ball, I'd be stoaked even if its a zone off, honestly I just want some sign of teamwork in our defencive half and more numbers around the ball. :thumbsu:

agree with you on the stanton point.
at one stage yesterday he stood in the goal square by himself with his arms in the air yelling at poor tommy hislop who was about 15 mins away with stantons opponent(cornes) and his own about(no.9) all over him as he was trying to get the ball out, why didn't he go over and help him out instead?
the bloke who wore number 5 last and even the one before him would of.
but then again they played for the love of the jumper i guess.

Hrmm, I'll agree with Stanton...

Slattery was ok. If anything he is only defensive.

You forgot Dyson.

Monfires planned on Rodan most of the game, got more of it than rodan, but did less with it.

Hard to blame any 1 person i guess. There were several.

Slattery usually takes on the opposing player in crucial moments during clearances around the ground, when he could just easily handpass it too a close team mate, when I say "trying to be a hero" it means he is too confident in himself and his abillities during certain situations.

(Also I might have missed out on a few things cause I missed 26 minutes of the first quarter, Train was held up by the cops??)

When I meant Defence, I meant the whole team (Including Midfielders).

Mcveigh }
Lonergan} The income of these guys will make a big impact in the week following.
Fletcher }

The defensive side of our game has more hole's in it than a screen door atm! If i were Knights i would be working on our defensive side than our attacking side. The best form of attack is defense.

Yes there are definitely issues with the midfield. I think the backline do a respectable job. Its the lazy midfielders in our team which let the opposition score so many goals. Players don't man up. They don't apply pressure.

I am looking forward to McVeighs return. I believe he can lift the midfield and make it better. Players like Stanton will lift their efforts when McVeigh returns. He sets a good example to the rest of the midfield. He is a leader. Players like playing with him.

Well Gary O'Donnell is allegedly the defensive aspects coach, so I think he should be taking on board your advice too. Maybe he's another relic from the Sheedy era who should have marched on ?

Dyson was with Rodan for the first half atleast, and was then moved to Surjan. He beat both of them.

They highlighted Slattery's defensive skills (or lack of them) on tonights edition of on the couch. It is no wonder he gets beaten so easily. The defensive pressure he put on Burgouyne was non existent. He got beaten by 3 or 4 opponents last night. But you are right, he did have a lot of friends.

nb. not bagging essendon.
saw the footage of slattery playing on burgoyne that resulted in burgoyne running into goal.
havent seen much of slattery.
does he normally give extremely talented players 3metres in their forward 50?
and
are you guys worried about the very offensive brand of footy?

ps. send houli and ryder down to carlton

Let's just say that he has no awareness of what is going on around him. That is being kind.

You're kidding right? Dyson was terrible for you guys. Runs forward at all costs with no defensive plan to his game whatsoever.

I thought Rodan and Surjan were comfortably better than Dyson. They didn't get a heap of the ball, but their disposals were damaging.
