Do you guys really think that this year is much different to the last?

I'm not convinced. There's good signs for the future but the team is not playing that much differently. We lost to the Hawks and the Roos again, and those games were pure deja vu in many respects. A big percentage early in the season, but losing games we should win....kinda like last year.

What think ye?

yeah, i've got that unsettling feeling again...half indigestion half butterflies...we could pull off something special this weekend...one of the great wins maybe...

If we are a serious top 8 team this year... we'll kill the eagles, we have had the wood on them at skilled for a while now... forget last game... that was definately a one off!! (Losing from 54 Points up.)

We won't know for sure after this week... And probably won't know for another 10 weeks if we are finals contenders this year...

But this week is where it starts if we are.

Definite deja vu from last season. Remains to be seen if anything has changed, games against West Coast, Freo, Port etc... will be some indication, especially if they're hard fought and hard won (or even lost, as long as they're hard fought really). Looking forward to St Kilda and Collingwood games, like the Hawthorn and Roos games they'll be a good indicator of where we really stand in the competition. We should be winning those sorts of games if we're where we think we are, we'll have to wait and see if anything has really come out of the losses to the Hawks and Roos. There'll be no excuses after round 15 if they lose to the Saints, Bombers or Collingwood.

The forward line structure is much better than last season. Bomber has been prepared to play the younger kids and they have talent...in the midfield also. We are fitter.

I question the guys' burning desire to be the best though...that reminds me of last year. I think they should make finals which will be different to last season but I have a feeling they might be satisfied with that...I would love them to prove me wrong.

No I think this year they are a much stronger lot - the talls are pretty impressive up forward - Mooney Nathan and Hawkins will be something special in 12 months but even now in the right conditions they are a hard match up - all 6' 4 or 6' 5 and can play. Add S Johnson and it looks dangerous with Gary and Chapman keeping it in there.
The mid field seems better - Selwood and Gary and Bartel and Chapman are really firing and Wojinski will get better. The backline may need one more tall and Harley will fill that role when right.
The key is those that are not in the side - King, Stokes, Prismall, Hunt, Byrnes and even Gardner and Playfair (I know what people think but they have played a lot of senior footy).

I have convinced myself - this is the year.

I wish I could have your faith...;)

Really not sure about the side yet,but the win last week has given me the impression that this year might be something special.

playing more entertaining football this season and seems to have more promise. we've lost games but havent really been thrashed which is something that happenend to us alot last season (two 100+ losses) and when we play bad teams, we seem to be really able to assert our authority.

What a load of bollocks! The side is much fitter than last year, we have a gameplan of sorts, and we have some great new talent emerging. I agree with Bomber that this is a different side to last year. Our biggest problem is consistancy which has been stated by players and coaches in the media as well. I think you all are just hitting the panick button.

No, not at all. The only similarity I've seen is the lack of consistency, but I think we're off to a much better start than we did last year, and we have a much more potent forward line.

Still, other teams have advanced too and that is the challenge that we face. We must beat West Coast this week and Freo the week after to keep in touch and to realise the confidence we need to defeat the good teams.

Aside from WC there is a host of teams that appear at this early stage of the season to be of quite similar standard. Infact taking away Richmond, I would say that on neutral grounds on any given day any team could beat anyone else.

Even Sydney appear to have come back to the field so to speak. Fremantle have not yet emerged as the force that was expected. Similarly there appear to be holes in the Bulldogs team that have been worked out.

In other words there is a great opportunity this year to be super competitive and be in the mix for a top 4 spot. Port Adelaide are one of the big improvers but I wouldn't be surprised to see them slip a little as the year goes on.

To beat WC this weekend would give the team a real shot of confidence that may springboard them for the rest of the year. Assuming egos can be kept in check, it would be great to string together 4-5 wins in a row against opposition that we should be competing with for finals spots.

You would think that much would have been learnt both last year and even in the matches to date about not getting too far ahead of themselves. If we play strong, disciplined, consistent footy at the level we are capable of we can go a long way. My doubts lie not so much with our potential as with our mental capacity to realise that potential.

It is really quite simple. Beat clubs higher on the ladder. It doesn't matter if we beat Melbourne and Richmond by 45 goals each. If we cant beat top 8 sides we simply wont be in there ourselves.

That's what happened last year in a nut shell. It's shaping up that way again. We need to beat West Coast then travel and win interstate too. This has been our problem for 2 years, not just the last one.

I hope we win this week against West Coast. Come on boys.
