Yeah well I skipped the mid-fielders till next time because I didn’t have that much time.. lol, so here’s the ruck. Melbourne had a very strong ruck line-up a few years ago, with Stynes as number 1 with White as number 2, and a young Alistair Nicholson as number 3 or 4. Nicho though may never have been good enough to get into the side as a ruckman, so in a move that changed his career he was tried in the back-line, to now be one of the Dee’s key defensive forces.
Jeff White: What can you say about this 25 year old except... superstar. Melbourne paid for drafting him, with compensation picks sent to Fremantle after the salary cap problems where made public. This though was all worth it (if only we had gotten Darren Gasper as well, seeing as we where already over the salary cap, which was a possibility...) because White has become such a pivotal player at the club. If he remains injury free he has the potential and skill to be the league’s leading ruck-man. He can also move forward to kick goals, or play as a loose player across halfback. His importance to the club is well documented, where would we be without him?? We can only hope he can have an injury free season!
Jolly: Recruited from Ballarat, this 20-year-old 198cm ruckman is a great backup for Jeff White. His ruck skills are at least equal to those of Simmonds, and Jolly can also play as a key position forward or back (something which Simmonds showed nothing as) He has so far only played 4 games, but with Simmo gone to Freo, Jolly will play allot of senior footy this year, hopefully proving himself as a strong backup option for White.
Nicholson: Started his career as a ruckman, if Jolly or White become injured he will most likely have to share some of the ruck duties. I have not seen much of Nicho in the middle, so I am unsure of his skill/or lack there of.
Jamar: From the looks of Jamar it’s hard to believe he could be passed up in the National Draft, Pre Season drafts, and somehow until the Dee’s snared him in the Rookie Draft. What a great pickup he may prove to be, he has been described as strong and tough, or the word I prefer “huge!” He has the physical ability to play senior footy, and as long as Jamar can improve his kicking, he may turn into a great ruckman. If there were any long-term injury’s I would expect either Jamar or Robbins to be promoted to the senior list.
Marshall: Only rookie that Melbourne retained from last year (apart from Jolly who was moved to the senior list), best described as a “beanpole” Marshall needs to bulk up in order to be strong enough to compete at senior level. Has played in the forward line for Sandy with the occasional stint in the ruck. Could turn out to be the tall forward we so desperately need, he we can dream can’t we?
The reports that Melbourne was lacking in the ruck may be true if either White of Jolly are injured, but having said that thanks to the recruitment of Jamar, we have another player who could play at senior level (hopefully he’s get a chance to show his skills in Brisbane) To sum up, if we maintain all the ruckman we have now, the future isn’t looking too bad for the Dee’s ruck stocks.
