Do you think if he got the sack from Carlton at the end of the year whether he'd be a good choice to coach us? He seems to be able to coach young players well, as his record with the Under 19s and reserves at both North Melbourne and Essendon suggests, plus he has coached premiership teams at AFL level too, so he has that experience too. Couple that with the fact that he hasn't had much to work with at Carlton for most of his tenure there, and most pundits think we have a strong enough list to finish in the top 8 at the very least, would you think he would be able to extract every ounce of talent and potential out of everyone on our list?

Pagan is overrated. Did ok with Carey as his lynchpin. Has tried to do the same with Fev, but Fev is no Carey. That said, the Tommahewk could be in need of a mentor!

We are coming off a 157 point win and there is still talk about replacing bomber. Disgraceful.

Why do people want coaches that are failing at other clubs?

Pagan has a bad history with young players, esp at Kangaroos.
Yeah, pretty much. The reasons given for Pagan so far are that he achieved success in the '90s. So? Bomber modelled our list on Brisbane's, but football moves so fast that two seasons after they were playing grand final footy we were looking outdated. I really question whether Pagan has the nous for modern footy. What we should be looking for in a coach is this, IMO:

1. Ability to shape a gameplan that suits the list and then modify that gameplan in game to beat the opposition. That's Bombers biggest weak point at the moment.
2. Change the culture of the club. The club might have to look at a big response for this (ie beef up Balme's side of the operation) but the coach will always be a crucial part.
3. List management. IMO we have a solid core of players at the moment and recruitment in the last two years has set us up for the next 5 years (though it needs to be consolidated this year with another ruckman and 1-2 KPPs).

Given all that, I think the clear choice is an assistant coach. I'm not convinced that any of the 'supercoaches' like Pagan, Malthouse, Matthews and Sheedy will be setting footballing trends anymore. We don't want the team playing catch up, tactics wise; we want to be setting the trends. An assistant will have spent time under his seniors and will know what's he about, but hopefully will bring something new (as in new to the footballing world, not merely the club) to the table. Even if they blatantly flog something from elsewhere (ie the 'Bloods' culture) I'll take them.

I agree Jester, one of Bombers big flaws is that he has always tried to build the side on another coaches model. As you said in early 2002-2006 it was Brisbane. Last year he said he was going to use the Bulldogs model which isn't doing so well for them this year.

In other words he has not one original idea to bring to the club. The last Coach we had who brought original thinking to the club was Blight. Since then nada.

I really would like a coach for the side that in a couple of years all the so so coaches are saying we are trying to copy what they are doing at Geelong. A coach who can take the game by the scruff of the neck and through their leadership, nous, tactics, player management, and training techniques take the Game to a new place (like Roos has) and hopefully win us a few flags on the way. That is my dream anyway.

We're on exactly the same page. We have a good list with plenty of improvement capable within the current 22 and the core of the next already layed down; we now need a coach who can instill a new culture into it and create a gameplan that sets the pace.

There is going to a few clubs after coaches at the end of this year by the looks of things. We just got to make sure we get the best one avalible. And to do that we have make sure they see we have what it takes to entise the best coach here. I think there could be maybe up to 5 current coaches out of jobs , not to mention the untried ones. .. . oh and Bomber

Hypothetically, if Thompson resigned and there was a vacancy, I would take Pagan in a heartbeat.

Sadly, his name has been dragged through the mud by coaching Carlton during a tough period.

Pagan won North U-19 5 premierships and Essendon 1 reserves premiership before becoming head coach at North Melbourne.

Overrated? He's a premiership coach. You don't just fluke winning those... I doubt any coach could've helped Carlton through the last 5 years...
