Design Ideas for new Perth Stadium

With AO up and running it seems a shame we cannot have the same in Perth.

it makes more sense to build a stadium as the construction cycle of a mining boom starts to ease. footy is important but not so important it drains scarce resources from cash flow projects.

If they built Perth Arena today even with all the design and planning **** ups it wouldn't cost any more than $450 million.

At the peak of the boom there was an apartments that were getting massive presales at record prices but they couldn't get built because the developer literally couldn't find a builder to do it. Things are a lot different now.

Dude, things are happening.

We now have a design for a stadium. In fact we have three to choose from.
Drainage works are in progress at the stadium site.

Adelaide Oval wouldn't be ready until 2015 if it was a total rebuild and perhaps later if it was on less established land like Burswood.
It was a total rebuild though. Not one seat remains from the Adelaide Oval of 2009 and I'll give that it was done in stages but if they built the western stand at the same time it would have added 1 year max, probably less as they could have just added extra workers to get it done.

If the Perth Stadium is anything like the new AO in terms of quality and design, get very very excited.

We can only hope so. Very jealous of the AO!

Cricket and football got together for a beautiful result in Adelaide, a large capacity stadium and only a short walk from Adelaide CBD. Melbourne have had a similar arrangement for much longer and football built a stadium within the CBD. Cricket and football also got together in Sydney with a larger capacity stadium at an historic ground as did cricket and football in Brisbane. Cricket and football remain separated in Perth despite cricket now seeing the folly of their limited thinking.

I see it as a missed opportunity for the economic rationalisation of sport and if the stakeholders had managed to manufacture an agreement I'm positive we'd have had something by now.

Wishful thinking. Cricket will never move from a stadium in East Perth that they own 100%. It's in cricket's interest to keep a boutique ground separate from the new stadium anyway.

but it is a horrible stadium in a horrible location

But it's a stadium they pay no rent at and still get sell out crowds to the matches that matter. The fact that the ground is meh isnt keeping people away.

they can't afford the holding costs that is why the ground is so shit.

I also wonder how long the ground will last with the rising water table. The areas around have been required to build up circa 3m higher.

It is a shame they couldn't do a deal with a WAFL club or two like East Perth to get better utilisation

The waca hasnt been kindly treated by the press in the last few days.

Jim maxwell on the abc called it ramshackle. The guardian and the bbc in their text coverage both noted how dated it is.

Its out of place now. Now that AO has wandered into the 21st century all the other major test grounds are very modern places with good to great facilties even for the plebs. At the WACA you can get a seat in an open aluminium temp stand in 40C. Which jonathon agnew opined that the closest shade was bill bowdens hat. And then wondered about the survivability of sitting there.

They were saying on ABC radio today that the media facilities for the print and website reporters was in a temporary tent. It was over 50C in there, and the reporters' phones and laptops stopped working. They had to stick them in a fridge to get them back online.

exactly, it fails in the duty of care to spectators and totally ignores the needs of cricket fans

And they wonder why Brisbane and Adelaide beat Perth for the rights to host a test next summer...

Not that much of a surprise. They only thing we really got going for us is the TV time-slot is more favourable for viewers on the eastern side of the country.

There is much work to be done, but moving away from the WACA Ground is not in the interest of cricket.

I'd agree with that pretty much. The ICC regulations regarding drop-in pitches for test matches are a bit inflexible. There's a lot of history and legacy tied in with it. There's no way they could afford to rent the new stadium for the entire season in order to play one test match, so they have to retain the WACA Ground for test matches. A boutique ground would work better for Sheffield Shield matches but wouldn't get awarded hosting rights for a test match if it was too small. It's a bit of a compromise all round, but retaining the WACA makes sense.
