With the exception of jack all of our selections were Mid's, from my point of view we should have been trying to fill the void down back, obviously GM & TW think that we need to boost our Mid stocks but what about the backlines? i fear that in the new year this is still going to be something we strugle with i know we have polak now and with newman and thursfield set to return but is that enough?

(as PLSC would say this club is a joke) ;)

You can essentially say we added Polak in the draft, wart! That would be one addition to the backline.

Polak and Thursfield are surely penciled in for down back post gaspar. JB has won two AA selections playing the rebounding CHB role. That is three legitimate key backmen.

Schulz may be another option (though I think he is a forward), ditto that for McGuane.

I would like to see a few talls in our Rookie players just in case. I don't mind if they are backmen or forwards. A project ruckman wouldn't hurt either.

Still one more senior spot to fill and 2 rookie spots as well so we may see a key defender brought in

Schulz down back seems a likely option. Every pre-season it's always written that he's earmarked for CHB (then he gets injured). He won't be at CHB this year with the acquisition of Polak, but he is another option for down back.

Potentially Riewoldt and Hughes the new tall forward options to support Richo. Its about time we had a big kid as a mark-up forward.

There's no need for everybody to be so stressed !!!

We have three extra picks. What would that cover, or need to cover?

- A 197+ ruckman
- A KPP, not so much a backman, just a promising KPP, maybe Collier.
- Top-up form there, small forward if that suffices.

Collier is to young to go in the rookie draft.

FWIW Would the drafting of Perry from the Roos be a wise move if we a re looking at another KPP defender type with the PSD pick we have to wait for the Power and Hawks to select and then we would be able to grab Perry if he is still there. I agree with one of the other posters and I still believe that Wallace plans to have Schulz as a backman in the future. But for injury this year he would have gone there. Overall we are not too bad for those types when you consider that Polak, Thursfield, Hall(some don't rate him but as a 3rd tall could be useful), McGuane(not sure he is a backman, more Ruck height) and possibly Schulz we have decent numbers not a huge depth but a good start. Again if we were to add Perry instead of Kingsley it would give us 6 guys capable of playing in the backline in the future.

dont forget that terry and co tried to get the afl to alter its mature age rule to allow for Podsiadly, he stated that he was lookin at him as a mobile defender......

I personally dont mind the thought of haveing Pods in the side, he's 3 years younger then kingsley, is in a league of his own in the VFL and has height and big body to play at either end, ofcourse we would have to draft him in the pre-season and as a floater from forward to defence it doesn't seem to bad of an idea.....

i do realise he did nothing at AFL wen he was on collingwoods list but he'd surely know that this would be his last shot at the big time and really come out with alot to prove.....

Personally i would prefer to take another kid in the pre-season draft but if we're to take a mature player i rekon pods should be it.....perry while he is a defender and only 22 he's not much chop at the other end from the reports and plus there has been nothing of late that indicates we're still after him.

and while kingsley is a proven goal kicker at AFL level i think at 28 years of age we're not going to get much out of him except frustration. and well he's not a defenders a**hole either so we cant use him in that role.
Pods should be in serious contention if we're going that way and not after a kid.....

just my 2cents :D

the young talent that is yet to be drafted is amazing

the ackland and michael thing means we are going to have like the 4th or 5th pick in the psd so we better make it a good one

I think we might gamble on not taking a ruckman. Next year looks a very strong ruck class with Kreuzer, McEvoy, Sullivan, Henderson, Bellchambers probably all better prospects than Hampson (who went at 17 to the Blues). We are almost certain to be able to get a good one next year instead of a borderline nuff-nuff this year.

I think this draft we pretty much went for one of each.

KP defender (Polak)
KP forward (Reiwoldt)
Inside Mid (Connors)
Outside Mid (Edwards)
Backpocket / tagger / rover (Collins)
Freaky flanker / forward pocket (Petterson)

So you're saying that some sections of next year's draft are better than this year's superdraft? I wait for a decade later when each player drafted in the top 30 is some sort of freak. :D

I suppose you're right, but we've pretty much covered all parts where we need except for a ruckman, and we could pick a ruckman with say pick 24 in the rookie draft. I don't know, our ruck stocks are very thin ATM, only four and only 2 of them are up to standard ATM.

What other areas should Richmond cover in the PSD and rookie draft?

PSD = pre season draft

It is in Feb (I think), it is there so the league doesn't get sued for restraint of trade.

We passed on our last pick so we can invite a heap of guys to train over the preseason and pick the best one. So we could still get Kingsley, or alternatively we could get the next best elligable kid that was overlooked.

There is also the rookie draft where we pick rookies who can be promoted to our senior list if someone gets a long term injury.

carlton - ackland
essendon - michael
port - troy schwarze?
kangas - makepeace?
hawks - cartledge?
geelong - do they have a pick?

we are in a good position to get atleast the 2nd or 3rd best kid not to make it in the draft hopefully we get a big bloke

Used to be in Feb. Now it is mid-December. The old days of inviting 10 guys down to train with you for 3 months and play some practice matches are unfortunately over.

The PSD and rookie draft are on the same day - one after the other.

The kids training with us with a view of getting one of the remaining 3 spots (1 PSD and 2 rookie) - will do some running, some circle work and drills, and we get to talk to them and see what kind of blokes they are - but we won't see them in a game.
