Direct comparison with 1990 side

There were a few comments today re: the 1990 side that went all the way, and the current squad. One compared Leigh Brown to Charlie Manson... got me to thinking, how similar ARE they?

Here's the team - any takers for the best comparisons? Here's mine:- (current players in bold). Gaps where I don't know the players well enough to do a good comparison.

Tough to compare the two teams! For the sake of fun, though ...

- Different positions but Harry O's fantastic long kicks from beyond 50 sometimes remind me of the goals Dougie Barwick used to always kick.
- For Starcevich ... maybe Nick Maxwell. Similar height and a reliable defender.
- Absolutely agree with the Wright - Thomas comparison.
- Turner ... maybe Tarks. Not really flashy in any sense but always reliable.
- Christian ... Cloke, perhaps?
- Gayfer ... Presti. This team's human blanket ...
- Crossisca ... Hmm. Wellingham or Goldsack.

I'll leave the rest for someone else ...

Harry is a hybrid of Micky Gayfer and Dennis Banks.

Daisy is a hybrid Graeme Wright and Micky McGuane.


Although none of them are exact matches...obviously.

Medhurst is the closest we have to Barwick right now.

Didak obviously fills the Daicos role.

Beamer and Sidey are the young turks, Tony Francis and Scotty Russell.

Luke Ball is our Tony Shaw.

I think the OP made good player comparisons, but you seem to have missed the point completely

I think we're more like the 2003 side to be honest. Coming out after the mid-season reak and slamming out win after win with one of the great sides of the modern era hanging around looking threatening. Just hope we end up with a better result.

We are nothing like the 2003 side. We have a far better and deeper midfield and in fact have more depth all over the park. In 2003 relied far too much on Buckley Rocca and Clement.

i dont think you can do more than half a dozen comparisons...its a different time...

I think this side has more overall talent that the 1990 side.

This side is far quicker, has more players who can kick a goal and has better midfielders.

Late night fun maybe, but those players really do have similarities, be it, hardness, mongrel, uneasiness, men mountains and pure talent. Nice thread. Keep it up.
