The way the MFC has acted over the last couple of days is disgraceful. I am ashamed to call myself a Melbourne supporter. The way they have treated Woey is nothing short of abysmal. They expect loyalty from players like Yze and Johnstone. Where is the loyalty they have shown Woey? Especially when he has offered to take a significant pat cut. It works both ways MFC.
I have already e-mailed the Club my thoughts. I have ripped up my membersip renewal. They are not getting money out of me after this incident. I know I have not always been a huge wrap for Woey, but there was no one who put more in and cared for the jumper more than he did. Now to be traded to Collingwood, a club I hate with an almighty passion I just can not accept.

P.S I know I have not posted for a while, and now that I am so annoyed with the Club, it is unlikely that I will bother much at all.

I can understand where you are coming from, but the trading of one player is not worth ripping you memebership up over. We COULD NOT afford Woey. Trying to re-sign TJ, Powell, Robbo, Yze etc this year was impossible without offloading someone on a high wage. I believe Chell wanted to go back to Sydney, and that we may have offered him but got knocked back (not sure about this, jsut my opinion). Woey had to go. There is also next year to worry about, Neitz, White and others are out of contract then, and we need extra cap room to re-sign youngsters like Arma.

BTW; According to a person on Demonology, TJ has re-signed today, and Yze is expected to re-sign tomorrow.

well all i can say is that im in shock we got rid of him. despite what i think of him off field i think he is a super player (for christ sakes he won a brownlow!) but i heard that he was not prepared to take a pay cut so the club couldnt fit in the other players. but what bemuses me is that they keep someone so sporadic like Robbo and trade Woey to Collingwood. i thought Woey would have been a more valuable player than Robbo. there r some players who r pretty damn lucky that they r still with the mfc and poor Shane isnt.

Andrew it is rather harsh to rip up your membership renewal form over something like this. i have read on other sites that a few people r gonna do that. but really what does the club gain from it? i really dont see why u would do it. dont u buy a membership to support the club, not a player? i just dont see what message it sends when people do / say those kind of things. Each to their own though. (btw im not having a go at ya mate)

not surprised with that decision dees01 i think a lot of ppl would be doing the same.
Most will be over it before the next season begins, the rest aren't worth having as supporters anyway, to think you give up a club for 1 trade. If we want success, as ND said, we have to be ruthless, and this is with trading as well as on field performance. You can't have it both ways, it was either Woey or 2-3 other players going.

I'm over it already. Shane did great things for us but I think we got the best out of him. He's no where near as good as Yze & Johnno so why should he be paid more?

Welcome aboard Chris Heffernan & Draft pick no 16!

I was over it as soon as I heard Essendon had thrown in pick 17! that really threw the deal our way

16,17 Who cares!? The deal is done as it had to be. Gotta make sure we go in with a full list next season & give it a huge shake!

But it's a warning to us & other clubs, to manage their resources better in future.

i'm not going to be saying much on this issue, for well reasons!think you guys know me well enuff to know anyways. but all i have to say in this thread is that

1. its not worth tearing up membership renewal over. 2. nicki, sorry, dont take this personally but why do you always say things about the guys off the field? u dont know them!! so how could you possibly not like them?
and 3. i too have emailed the club with my thoughts, did yesterday, and you gotta think realistically, its not going to do anything. the trade had to be made, and altho many other as well as myself are well "not happy" with this, especially the way the club has treated one of its most loyal players. it had to happen and did happen.

What's the point in doing that Andrew?? Seriously, what's the point? Woewodin was one of the most over-paid players in football. He hasn't done a damn thing in 2 years, and we needed the space to sign players who were more important than him. Think about this.

TJ and Yze are our midfield guns. While I was a big mark for Robbo to go, we need him. He is a tall up forward, and we need someone down there apart from Neitz. Lamb needed to be re-signed as we desperately need him at Full Back, and Powell is the hardest nut in the team. No-one would want Leoncelli, so where does that leave us?? Without Woewodin. It might be a shock mate, but nothing to rip up your membership over. I thought you were better than that. Think about the red and blue, the club you support. It's not the end of the world.

I was over this trade the moment I saw us receive Heffernan (who is THREE years younger), Picks 16 and 17 PLUS plenty of room in the cap. We offload Woewodin, his HUGE contract and Pick 12. There is nothing wrong with that. I don't think Woey will be the same player after this, but I could be wrong. He will come out fired up against us, but I'd love to watch Heffernan get 30 touches and clean him up! :D

And, if any Melbourne supporters rip up their memberships over this, then you don't deserve to support the club. We are a team, not one player. While he was great for us, Heffernan will be too and those picks will do nicely. Time to move on.

It does not make up for the way Woey was treated in this case. There was no respect at all. I thought MFC was better than that. Obviously not.

I am not questioning that at all mate, I don't agree with how things went there. But in the end, we didn't really have much choice. Woewodin has already stated that he is over it, and he was the one that was treated badly.

I know we didn't handle it very well, but really, it's not something to rip up your membership over. That's the last thing the club needs in times where money is hard to come by.

Spidey - I wouldn't rate Woewodin ahead of Yze, Johnstone, Neitz, White and even Stephen Powell. He would be lucky to be in the best 5 at our club these days.

i totally agree dees01, apart from the fact that id NEVER be ashamed to call myself a melbourne supporter.

yes, they treated him like ****, but as they've said - they didnt have the choice...

The fact is that he's gone. Not because he wasn't wanted at the club, but because that was the only way out. We have to be positive about this, it could have been much worse. We could have lost Ooze and TJ, and I for one am glad that we didn't. Sure Woey has been a good contributer over his career (barring 2001), but at $450,000 a year, we couldn't afford him along with Yze and Trav.

Every Melbourne person, whether they be on the board or just members and fans like us, would have loved for him to stay, but it wasn't to be. And look on the bright side. We may have been slightly dudded on the Collingwood deal, but we virtually stole Heffernan from Essendon for nothing. They had the same problem as us but they ended up relinquishing all three of their youngsters. At least we got to keep two of them and we recieved one promising one back in return. Woey is 26, Heffernan is 23. Long term, we will look back on this trade period and say it was a good one after all.

Lets put it all behind us and look forward to next year. Should be a good one :D

Senseless?

Spidey you know that I'm relatively sane & does it really surprise you that I & most other Dees fans wont be tearing up our memberships just because Woey left?

The Club itself is bigger than ANY player.

Woey was great for us but he's been FAR from our best player in the last two seasons & certainly not worthy of the money he was asking for even after the pay cut. He would've remained our highest paid player even though clearly Yze,Neitz,White & Johnstone are more valuable to the TEAM. Shane's living on reputation now, we got the best out of him & i'll never forget his contribution to the club.

If we'd kept Woey, we would've lost Powell & possibly others.

We cant afford to go another year with a list of 36, look at this season we were so desperate we gave Clark a game (sorry Clarky ;)) We need a full compliment of players next season to have a decent crack at the title. We looked like we were two short by the end of this season, we had blokes playing in positions they should never have been in had we had more cover.

It's the right decision, a very tough one but it's was taken with the club as a whole in mind.

I am an Eagles Member. So, I hope you dont mind my comments.

IMO there is more that goes into making up a successful Club than how much a player is paid. To me as an average supporter I could not care less how much they are paid. There seems to be a hangover in regards to Salary Cap problems when the Demons tried to poach Peter Matera even though they probably couldnt stay under the cap. Also how they poached Jeff White from Freo when they were not able to stay under the Cap.

You make your bed and you lie in it.

In so far as the fabric of the Club and the Values of your players I have great concerns.

Now to the main point of my post. I do not know Shane Woewodin personally but it is well documented the efforts he put into getting listed by Melbourne and then winning a Brownlow. Surely the Coaching Staff is responsible for getting the best out of him and the Admin about getting the best value from this player. Maybe he was overpaid. But I heard Shane speaking on 6PR in Perth tonight. He sounded a shattered man. Ready to accept a challenge. But sounded as if he was absolutely shafted by the Melbourne Football Club and how it went about this deal. I think you have lost a fine person and one who contributes to the fabric of your Club. Woewodin will accept the new challenge. I dont think you will be terribly hurt by his loss. But the way the Club has gone about it and the attitude of some of its supporters leaves me dumbfounded. I wish Woey had been traded to the Eagles.

I totally agree!

They have no idea how to run the club!
How on earth did he manage to be on such a huge wage in the 1st place when the c;ub knew in the next 2 years they had all those other players to sign up.

One big stuff up to the player that Joe would have had as Dees next Captain. You don't do that to such quality people like Woey....he was 110% professional in hi approach to training, etc. and they shafted himgood and proper.

The club should have accepted Woey's pay cut and cut their losses with showponies like Robbo.

What's the deal with John Anderson and why all the hush, hush? and confidentiality clauses........typical!

You can be ruthless with players that are not so dedicated.
The Management stuffed up and now they are looking for excuses for their supporters!

Some poor planning yes, the salary cap was being increased at a significant rate, the board would have thought this increase would continue.. it has since slowed dramatically. They also could not predict how good a season TJ would have to know his salary would need to be increased. Also at the time we didn't want Woey to go back to WA, as at 24 you would think his best footy was ahead of him.. sadly it was downhill from there

The president doesn't decide the captain. Also Neita might play for 5 or more years yet.. and by then Woey would be in his 30's as well, I doubt we would have a new captain who was already 30.

The club should have accepted Woey's pay cut and cut their losses with showponies like Robbo.
Who says we didn't try to offload players such as Leoncelli, Robbo, Walsh etc, but had little interest? This would be a factor as to why the situation appears to have been handled badly.

These clauses are standard in todays game

You can be ruthless with players that are not so dedicated.

You percieve them as having stuffed up, others don't. Where are the non-valid excuses? There are reasons why Woey left, but no 'excuses'.

If Woey hadn't asked for so much in the first place he'd have been a lot better off. I'm proud of the fact that the club stood up & didn't pander to him. They told him what would be required to remain at Melbourne & he refused so See ya mate!

He is a top bloke & has been great for us but it's history now.

After seeing Woey on the news tonight running around in a Collingwood top, it made me sick. I don't think I'll be able to watch a Collingwood match next year and my thoughts on the issue have not changed.

We must move on. Give it until about round five and we will be TOTALLY over it (Because we will be 5-0 :D )

I saw that too, but I just kept picturing Heffernan in the Melbourne gear, and it didn't worry me at all. Andrew, it is partly his fault that he is gone, as he demanded so much money to stay last year. We lost Wiz because of that, and if we didn't stand up for ourselves this year, we could have lost alot more.

Don't let it get to you. I know I can't change your view, but the Dees will be stronger for this in the long run. We have 15 players to re-sign next year, including Neitz and White, so we must make room for them.
