Finally sanity has prevailed. At every home game this year the players will get a guard of honor featuring flags for all of our 16 premierships. I know that a couple of clubs are going to crack it when they see it, but I don't give a sh--. Well done to the club on this initiative.

As a club we've won 16 premierships and we should proudly display them all.

I also have no interest in comparing it to what other clubs have done.

No one should be outraged at acknowledgements of things like this within a club.

Almost every club was formed and competed for years prior to joining the VFL/AFL. Many of those were playing in the pre-eminent competition of the day at the time. This history stands in its own right.

Would it be a bit like saying that no premierships count before the time we had 16 clubs in the comp?

Not quite. A competition is a competition, no matter how many teams are in it. Although the issue and obsession people have with 'counting' is bizarre - everything 'counts' (within context) to me.

This is more referring to recognising history across competitions, rather than along one.

But since this football club competed across competitions, it is entirely appropriate (and actually desirable) for it to acknowledge its (substantial) history prior to joining the VFL/AFL. I mean currently the 'Premiership Stand' only contains the years of Geelong's VFL/AFL premierships - why is that? It's not called the 'VFL/AFL Premiership Stand'.

Also within recent years, Geelong has released pieces like this:

geelong-150-year-lithograph.jpg

Which although harking back to the formation year of 1859, visually displays only the nine premierships after 1925. Why is that?! Absolute madness.

Liverpool FC is rightfully regarded as one of the most successful clubs in English football history. But the Reds have never won an EPL title. To the English, that juxtaposition sits fine. If you tried the same in an Australian context your stance would almost certainly be laughed off, and that is the difference.

It's as if they only acknowledge what others want them to acknowledge, or recognise, isn't it? But of course other clubs would wish to downplay our successes.

But it IS our club's history and it's important to remember that.

The only problem I can see is Port Adelaide whipping out their eleventy million premierships, then demanding a new ground to display all their flags.

Hmm... Now there's a thought. If their players run through all of their flags before playing us at AO, they would get so exhausted that we could get a 10 goal first quarter jump on them. :)

I can only think culturally we're so used to the old VFL or AFL that we just think the club and competition have always been joined. Clearly, they haven't.

That's not a problem to me. In fact I say bring it on. What a wonderful achievement in the game of Australian football!

That's right. Of course the VFL/AFL began as a rebel breakaway competition from the VFA/VFL, and in the 120 years since have not wanted to have much to do with various state bodies or the game as a whole.

That relationship has now been ultimately realised in that most people now call the sport in itself "AFL".

Great news. I can understand the argument for our old VFA success to not be officially recognised on the league records but as a club we should be doing everything possible to properly recognise and celebrate our successes past and present!

Gonna start a thread on the main board "Who would win? Cats of 1878-1886 or Cats of 2007-2011?" :p
Lol start a main board thread about 7 flags in 9 years and tag some of the worse hawfie nuffies:P

Nor should they.

Funny though how the club doesn't really get our history. We have the grandson of David Hickinbotham still alive and living in Victoria- his brother also played for us in the 1940s- yet despite many calls over many years to the club to tell them of this they don't recognise it.
Seems that this is a project for board members/ club officials not for members, not for the club overall.
