2010 was another one that slipped away. If Ling's goal to put us in front in the Qualifying Final was allowed to stand, the Aints and Collingwood would've fought out a Prelim while we would've played a Bulldogs side we smacked by 100 points a few weeks before in the other Prelim.
2010 was one of the ones I think we were fine to finish where we were. We were off that year and the third best side overall. The stuff going on with Bomber and Ablett clearly served as a distraction and was to our detriment. The Saints had our measure that year, and the Pies went past us significantly. While the QF loss hurt because of the closeness, in hindsight, I would prefer to get belted in a PF than a GF.

And Cam Guthrie equal B & F. His best has been sadly missing since 22. And it has cost us. A true elite 2 way runner.
True. Was also very good in 2020 after Kelly left. Best of Dangerfield, Selwood, Kelly and Guthrie in midfield at the same time is sadly something we never got. We were seemingly always a quality rotation short in that era - same has been true 2024-2025 actually.

A lot of interesting points raises. Thanks.

Don't want to draw too long of a bow, but historically, I really do think that Geelong has more often than not been a good H&A side, but not so much a good finals one. All things considered, quite a poor one actually.

Footy Tables really says it all if you check it out. The discrepancy between our regular season performances Vs our finals performances is stark.

Whereas teams like Richmond and Hawthorn (who we generally own in regular season matches) rise to new levels come finals, we more than often falter.

No, we cant use history as a basis for eveything, but I really do believe there is something to it. Can anyone imagine Hawthorn blowing the number of Prelims that we did? I certainly can't.

Can't see it that way given how pathetic we were v Pies.

They had the week off and everything bounced their way that night (there's not much you can do when blokes are having shots from 65m out and the ball bounces at right angles and goes through for a goal). We beat them by 6 goals in Round 9 that year, and were all over them in the return encounter in Round 19 until the worst goal umpiring of all time completely sucked the wind out of our sails.

I'm sure a lot of us think about 2019 the way Pies fans think about 2007. Tough PF where we had a good chance of winning only to fluff it up...and missing out on GF opposition that pretty much crapped their pants on the biggest stage. Maybe we wouldn't have beaten the Giants by as much, but it would've 100% been an easier game - same for the Pies had they nabbed a last minute goal against us.
Wonder if that 2022 QF v Pies is a similar scenario

You think the Pies side that lost to the Swans by 1 point would have belted them at the MCG in the grand final?

I mean, they might have beaten them there at the 'G, but doubt it would have been the same kind of walk in the park as it was for Geelong.

Only one final at home (which we admittedly blew) has a fair bit to do with it.

Yes we've lost a lot of prelims but we've also made it to 11 grand finals since 1989. If you stacked that up against our number of top 2 finishes it probably isn't that lopsided.

Often being the 2nd-4th best side unfortunately does lend itself to losing a fair few finals as we aren't spending 5 year blocks in the bottom 4 "protecting" a finals win ratio.

Had they beaten us, they would not have played Swans in Sydney

I get that. My point is that they were beaten by the Swans in a final. So I don't think it's a sure thing that they would have beaten them in the GF, had they gotten there.
Like Lions beating us after losing to us in a final?

Will never know.
Do you think they could have belted Port in 07 GF?
