Mt Lilydale looking to join the EFL. Having difficulty retaining players due to travel factor. Can't blame them, nobody liked trekking out there either!
Would seriously question the wisdom of this, assuming it is true. Canterbury came to the VAFA as they couldn't win a game in Div 4 EFL back in 2013, and finished 3rd in VAFA D4 in 2014. Mt Lilydale finished 8th in VAFA D4 this year. How well can they expect to go in EFL Div 4?

Canterbury are not doing so well in D3

Really? In finals contention all the way to the end...
I don't know about player numbers (their 2's struggled), or finances...
All but 2 teams were fighting for a finals spot in D3. Problem for Canterbury is the lack of numbers. Seconds struggled so depth is non existent. Don't know how they recruit in the area.

Will be interesting to see how Mt Lilydale go. EFL structure next season will move towards what the VAFA has (Prem, Div 1, 2, 3, 4). A new oval which isn't absolutely terrible with clubrooms that aren't portables might do well for the club in the future. All the best and hopefully it works out. Saves a bit of travel on our ends.

With Mt Lilydale heading out and Eltham also probably heading out of Div 3 that would mean 9 & 9 for Div 3 & 4. Wonder what the VAFA will come up with if that happens.

Also noticed Chadstone are advertising for a seniors and reserves coach with no indication of what division they are playing in. Maybe heading back into Div 4?? Hopefully they come back and get a few wins on the board. With Essentially every league in Melbourne having a whipping team at the bottom of the ladder it would be nice to have Div 4 competitive all round next season.

Any early news in the off season so far?

Chadstone has indicated they intend to have both those sides in the thirds comp and eventually head back but not until 2020. I think it would be great to see all our divisions remain with 10 sides and wouldn't be surprised to see the VAFA encourage their return for next year if we are in fact losing sides.

Is there a ranking for leagues and divisions in Melbourne anywhere? Interested to see how the different leagues around me stack up

The best way would be to go off the afl victoria championships of which the EFL holds. In saying that the vafa decided a few years ago they didnt want to compete in anymore after they won it.

The best gauge would probably be to look at practice match results. A lot of club in the VAFA Divisions play against sides from div 2 to div 4 in the EFL.

any early predictions for 2019??

Albert Park are very confident of winning their first senior premiership after successfully lobbying the VAFA to demote them to D4. VAFA wanted 10 teams in D3 with AP to stay up, but surprisingly the VAFA didn't get their way this time.

Surely not a 9 team D3 comp and a 10 team D4?

9 teams in both D3 & D4 is my understanding, with Eltham and Mt Lilydale leaving
At least 9-team comps have the virtue of being even: every side plays each other twice, and gets two byes.

The side that has the bye in R18 may have an advantage of having a rest before going into the finals, but there is a 5/9 chance that the side with the R18 break won't make finals. Also, the teams that get the bye either side of the weeks off (Queens Bday, the July break) may be a bit rusty coming back after 2 weeks off, but there isn't really any way around this.

Seems the VAFA have delayed releasing the div 3 and 4 fixtures. Could it be some last minute reshuffling of teams to try and even out both divisions?

Disappointed that AP have convinced the vafa to let them demote themselves back to Div4, it’s hard enough to recruit around the lake as it is. If potential players are sold a flag in div 4 rather than playing at a better standard in div 2 pretty sure they’ll take the flag any day. Smells a bit of the GE- Monash deal.

What's the GE Monash deal got to do with it. Monash came to GE with a problem regarding off field issues. So they asked for a merge with GE in D3. Amicable merge occurred. No buying a flag here.
