Movie Django Unchained

Watched this on Sunday night. Give it 7.5-8/10 Would be 9/10 but for the let down of the ending.

Something I found quite noticeable was the casting of African-American female characters. There seemed to be a very disproportionate amount of women with a lighter skin tone. I spotted 1-2 very dark female characters in the entire film. There was a much larger proportion of male characters with a very dark skin tone. A number of these female characters were not portrayed as second generation either.

It makes me wonder whether Tarantino finds lighter toned African-American women more attractive or screen friendly at the cost of historical accuracy? I really hope that is not the case.

In those days the slaves out on the field would have had darker skin compared to those who had house duties who would have had lighter skin.

Black is black.

I want my baby back.

Loved it!! Diggin' the Tarantino revenge bloodfest, first we get the Jews givin' it back to the Nazis and now the slaves to the honkies.

Agree that Christophe Waltz was in scintillating form, Leo good as bad.

Franco Nero's still a good-lookin' rooster

Great movie.

Just with the Australian accent debate I would have thought that the Aussie accent in that time period wouldn't be that strong, especially from a man the age of Jarratt's character. However, who cares. Funny how precious we are with accents. There are so many other inaccuracies in film to real life. It's a movie.

Finally got round to seeing this yesterday. Fantastic movie, we loved the ending, the only thing that my daughter didn't like, was what happened with Waltz's character.

Waltz & Di Caprio were brilliant & the interaction between their characters was fantastic.

Hasn't Tarantino stacked on the weight?

It was not serious. More Tarantino paying homage to Ozploitation films, which he loves.

Got around to watching it today, thought it was fantastic solid 9/10. Thought Fox was a bit disappointing as Django, but that's me nitpicking to find a reason not to give it a 10 basically. Classic Tarantino.

That Aussie at the end was from Wolf Creek wasn't he? Also, the KKK/Bag Head scene was hilarious.

I didn't want to mention that in case people hadn't seen the movie, that was seriously hilarious. It's why I love Tarantino movies so much, sure there's lots of violence, but there's also lots of humour.

What would be everyones top 5 Tarantino movies (i know there arent many).
Mine would be:
1. Kill Bill 2
2. Kill Bill 1
3. Pulp Fiction
4. Inglorious Basterds
5. Reservior Dogs

Mine would be:
1. Reservoir Dogs
2. Jackie Brown
3. Pulp Fiction
4. Django Unchained
5. Deathproof

Just a minor point, but one that I enjoyed. In the final shootout Django didn't stop to try to reload his pistol (which would have taken too long, given that they were percussion weapons); instead he picked up a revolver from one of the bodies and kept shooting.

Who would have made a better Django?
Role was written for Will Smith but thought Foxx did a good job.

KKK scene hilarious but uneccessary.
Waltz and DiCaprio perfect
Could have shaved 20 minutes off that without noticing but I enjoyed it.

8.5/10 for me and in his 2nd tier of movies

Top Tier (classics)
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Kill Bill 1 + 2

Second Tier (Bloody good movies and nail the genre)
Jackie Brown
Death Proof
Inglorious Basterds
Django Unchained

Hasn't made a bad movie for mine!!!!

1. Inglorious basterds
2. Django Unchained
3. From Dusk till Dawn (how did I forget this movie?)
4. Kill Bill 2
5. Kill Bill 1
6. Reservoir Dogs

8/10 for me. It was a movie that I thought about a lot afterwards too.

Christoph Waltz is excellent. Foxx was ok. DiCaprio was very good.

I found Samuel L Jackson's character pretty annoying but I'd have to say it was well acted.

I think Tarantino just portrays a stylized over the top version of slavery though, but that is clearly his intention.

Like some other posters here I wondered what will be next now that he's covered the Nazis, black slave owners. Maybe a film about Jesus I guess, with Christoph Waltz as Judas or something. That would be interesting.

When the Oscar noms came out a lot of people said Waltz didn't deserve it. After watching the film I strongly disagree with them, he was excellent. Perhaps another Oscar awaits him? He would certainly deserve it imho.

Will Smith would've been perfect.

I didn't realise it was written for him. Was he just not interested in playing the role?
Apparently he was doing MIB3 when Tarantino was ready to go with Django and didn't have time to work on it.

Tarantino says that he and Smith spoke, they decided the film/character would need work which would take time, decided they'd get back together if needed, then he spoke to others including Foxx and wanted him.
