F Reid, Tippett, B.McGlynn
Foll M.Pyke, J.Kennedy, L.Parker
I/C LRT, S.Mumford, AJ, J.Bolton
Emg T.Mitchell, M.Morton, Rampe

so in comes:Reid, Tippett, LRT, Shaw, Rohan, AJ

out goes: D.Rampe, T.Walsh, C.Bird, A.Everitt, T.Mitchell, M.Morton

unfortunately i couldnt find a spot for Mattner

Mitchell, Morton & Rampe become first choice emergencies with Lamb next in line.

these guys will get games in time with retirements.

in a perfect world with no injuries that would be my best team. i guess thats the good thing about injuries. without them guys like Rampe, Bird, Everitt, Mitchell, Morton & Lamb dont get games.

it brings up an interesting comparison actually. who would be preferred between Rohan & Morton? id have to say Rohan. thoughts?

I find it sacrilegious that people are considering dropping our new overlord and Brownlow/Coleman/Best Player Ever favourite Tom Mitchell for anyone.

I think those guys should be thankful to be given a chance to play with Tom.

But seriously here is try

Name who you would drop from the current team for:

Reid
Tippett
LRT
Shaw
Mattner

Rohan
AJ

How has the form been of the players you think might be the "outs"? Are the "ins" carrying any niggles? How has the teams form have we been winning by big margins? Who are we playing next?

There are some spots on this list that are deeper than others, someone gets bored enough to do a depth chart would be cool one day or is that too american

I dont think Rohan will play firsts this year, it will all be about getting strength, fitness and confidedence for him this year, likewise AJ is out for season.
With that in mind from the side that played today.

B Malceski, Richards, Smith
HB McVeigh, Grundy, Shaw
C Mitchell, Hannebery, Jack
HF O'Keefe, Goodes, Jetta
F Reid, Tippett, McGlynn

Shaw comes in for Rampe (who will be a good long term replacement)
LRT takes Everitt (and AJ's) spot
Reid for Walsh straight swap
Tippett comes in for Morton (feel bad saying it but he is most expendable from forward line)

Very hard to find a spot for Mattner, I put in some serious thought about McVeigh being moved back into midfield rotation rather than half back, and dropping Bird to find a spot for him.

B Marttner, Richards, Smith
HB Malceski, Grundy, Shaw

I've also been very kind to Mitchell (because as a supporter I'd love him to play every game) but there may be reasons for him to come out of side, such as fitness, (or form but hard to imagine this being the case(, so he could make way for Mattner as well.

Mattner has run his race? Really? The same guy who chased down, I think Birchall in the last quarter of the grand final, right before he and his hawk teammates had the chance to take it down the outer side for an opportunistic last gasp goal? That Mattner? He's best 22

Mattner does a lot of good things, he's experienced, an excellent tackler (up there with LRT as the best in the team), reads and intercepts opposition plays very well. However, its not inconceivable to suggest that people have overtaken him in the team. IMO Everitt is his direct competitor in the team. While Everitt isn't as good defensively, he offers speed out of the backline as well as accurate kicking to set up our counter-attack football style. Much better offensive weapon, so it will be up to the coaches to decide which way we go.

Honestly the difference between a Rampe/Everitt and Mattner is indistinguishable.

Think Marty has run his race.

Whilst I'm not sure that I agree, I do like that these sort of statements are getting thrown around after the huge concerns we had about our defensive depth a few weeks ago. Kudos to Rampe and Everitt for stepping up to the plate :thumbsu:

If you're going to support Mattner (which is entirely reasonable) then do it on the basis of current performance not 1 incident in a grand final, as history will tell you that means nothing. Remember when Amon Buchanan kicked the winning goal in the 2005 grand final? He became a fringe player with the Swans, was traded, and couldn't get regular games with his new club.

Mattner still best 22 for mine. Better defender than Rampe and Everitt. They are not known for their 3rd man up camikaze spoils. He had one absolute shocker this year but otherwise was solid in playing his role. Rampe and Everitt are taking their opportunities and I will admit it's a close choice now. Still think Mattner for most games & Everitt for differing matchups. Rampe has done all that is asked but is restricted a little in which defender he can realisitcally take. I'm a Rampe fan however.

Does this mean that we are going to lose some of our favourites son to retirement/other clubs? JPK left Hawthorn for greater opportunities/money. I think that will happen if younger players aren't given a chance.

Older players will need to be transitioned in stages to maintain success. I don't want an 80's West Indian cricket style exiting process (nor Warne-McGrath-Langer exit (3 was to many and 2 key bowlers was to many)).

I think Mattner should be transitioned out for Everitt long term (Everitt is 194cm tall, quick, a long kick and can transition into a 3rd up/3rd Tall. With this as a specific development, he will succeed. We got rid of Ablett (NOG) after 2006 and Buchanan/Scheider who both did heaps in 2006 (Buchanan kicked two pivotal goals in PF/GF in 2006) but I think it was the right thing to do as we didn't bottom out as a result. I also think that Mattner's poor form is actually a decline not form.

LRT will replace Rampe in the next few weeks and might need to be transitioned out at the end of next year. I think long term AJ will lead the defence for Richards, and have Grundy 2nd and Rampe/Everitt 3rd and 3rd up.

If Bird goes out for Mitchell, ROK will have more sit on rolls. (I like Bird, he is accountable and reliable but he goes. Long term Bolton will retire and players like Mitchell, Parker and Bird will be leadership group players.

Rohan doesn't come in. His biggest rehab will be mental. I hope he makes it. He was my personal favourite out of the kids but worry it will be too hard. It was a significant event. I hope he makes it and in 2-3 years will be long term replacement for Shaw.

With our best in, Morton and Lamb are not in. I don't think they will be transitioned in. When it is their time, they just have to make it or they will be left out (aka J Moore). Don't think you can create a plan based on all players but a core group with exchangable extras and this is what I feel.

Ok fine...he's out of the 22 now because he is injured, not because of poor form! There, I did it! Your turn...

This is so tough but what the last few weeks have proven is that when our older guys retire we are not going to go down the ladder as we have the cattle to replace them.

Anyway the top 7 players in terms of age are

1. Adam Goodes - 33 years, 4 months
2. Jude Bolton - 33 years, 2 months
3. Ryan O'Keefe - 32 years, 4 months
4. Rhyce Shaw - 31 years, 7 months
5. Martin Mattner - 30 years, 9 months
6. Ted Richards - 30 years, 4 months
7. Lewis Roberts-Thomson - 29 years, 8 months

Now I am of the opinion that this will be Jude's last year and I suspect it might be Mattner's as well or at least Mattner's second last year as he seems to have hit a small brick wall in form. Shaw is still playing really well (at least he was when he was playing) but with guys that age they can drop in form suddenly and unexpectedly, same with O'Keefe who has been great this year but could hit an unexpected form drop any time really. Richards still has a few years but we need to make sure Johnson develops the way he should as Johnson will be very important once Richards retires.

Good post - I'm not worried much at all about the ageing players on our list. We've been without LRT, Shaw and Mattner for a fair bit of this year and Bolton's output has been lower than in his heyday (which is no slight on the man).

Goodes and ROK will not suddenly retire at the top of their game, as with Bolton their influence will gradually wane and the transition is never as hard or brutal as supporters on the main board tend to think in their "OMG best young list" arguments. We need to be keenly aware of our huge lack of tall depth, particularly in defence, but otherwise things are not too worrying.
