Do we chase O'Keefe?

Ive heard he has definately stated he wants out of Sydney. Looking at our inside 50's against hawthorn we could have definately used someone like him on saturday. Can we fit him in the salary cap, and what would we need to give in order to get him? He has said he wants to go to a team that could win a flag in the coming years, so he might have us on his radar.

Byrnes, Tenace, Pris, one of our rucks (plenty of them in the 2's), draft picks, anyone else? whats a good combo for a deal?

Im not jumping the gun in anger at players, simply naming a few we could put in some kind of deal.

What are peoples thoughts?

I don't think they'll be pushing for him, however I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to have Ryan O in our side. I rate him highly. Sydney have a history of recruiting ready made players. Geelong have about half a dozen fringe players who would get a spot in any other side. I doubt the club will go for him but it wouldn't surprise me if RyanO dons the hoops for 2009.

To me, O'Keefe is not the sort we want.

We need a big, imposing and tough centre half forward (thank god hawkinsssssss!), not a lead up flanker like player.

As much as i regrettably have to say this, i don't want Lonergan in the team, however, i know he is more than capable as a lead up forward, slightly similar to Riewoldt (but no where as good). REcruiting O'Keefe would contradict a lot of our thoughts about Lonergan.

And he'll take it too. Shannon Byrnes would be picked every week if he was in another side. He's only 24 years old, good small forward (not for our team of course) can kick goals, has pace and has a mature attitude. If it were up to me I'd give Sydney a 3rd round draft pick plus Byrnes for O'Keefe, on the other hand this is a bad time to be a player in Byrney's shoes due to the drafting issues with GC-17.

If RyanO is a flanker lead up player then it would suit Geelong and keep Stevie J down near the goals where he does his best work. Stevie racked up 34 disposals Saturday but did stuff all in front of goals. Why do you think Stevie is picked every week and why do you think he won the Norm Smith in 07?

So, we've got Nathan Ablett who has retired, Darren Milburn who is contemplating his future, and the continuous mentioned of Tenace, Byrnes, D. Johnson being on the chopping block.

I'd love to see O'Keefe at the cats, but at the same time I wouldn't want that to stop the likes of Gamble or Hawkins making their way into the team. They play different roles obviously, but there's only a certian amount of spots in the forward line and I'd like to see those guys push their way in first.

Depends who we trade, if theres 2 involved then theres money freed up, i dont think its out of the question. Our depth is spoken about a lot so there's definately a few players the Swans may be interested in.

personally i think the lovett pick 23 is already lined up because roos has had meetings with him already and i think that wce wouldnt take pick 12 and 16 for kerr so we would be looking for a lower draft pick someone like richmond who is dumb enough to give away pick 8 or what ever they have

Yep I'd have him for sure. Is a great player. Some have stated we need a HF type player, I'd rather Mooney move out from goals as he has the yips more often than not. Therefore FF is up to either Lonners or Hawkins, with my choice being the latter.

SJ needs to be closer to goal, as shown on the weekend if he chases kicks and we rely on Stokes and Varcoe to crumb, just doesn't work. Both are not really strong in the body, whereas SJ can take a fairly good grab (plays taller).

Therefore if we could grab O'K for the flank, we'd be better off. Who would we give up though? I'm unsure. Moving would have to include two, to free up space on the cap. However we also have room since Nathan retired, though would obviously need more for O'Keefe.

Would be highly interested.

Would've been great to have in the side Saturday, but he is an older version of Gamble really. I think he may only serve to hinder Gambles chances if he did arrive.

I'm probably too annoyed to think it through properly but my thoughts on O'Keefe are; if he wants to return to Victoria then (regardless of policy) the club would have to investigate what it would take to land him.

The guy is a gun.

Reality is though, we probably are not prepared to give up what Sydney would want to get the deal done and fitting him inside the cap would be pretty hard to do.

As a side note - I think thegerman mentioned Steve Johnson needing to play closer to goals. I hear what you are saying however I've always thought Johnson, if he could build the tank, would be a great addition through the midfield in bursts.

He is creative and has good awareness. Sure, every now and then he'll do something a bit naff which might result in a turn over or goal but I think the pros outweigh the cons. His disposal is pretty good and he sees things unfolding better than most.

Geelong could do worse than throwing him into the mix next year to see how he goes. Just adds another option through there.

O'Keefe should be looked at for 2 reasons-

1. He is a terrific footballer who would mix beautifully into our forwardline. A strong marking, mobile half forward is what we need. At 27 he doesn't have too many great years ahead, but our window is this next 2 or 3 years.

2. By getting him it also prevents another team getting him. Sounds obvious but I would hate to see the hawks for a start get him and get further ahead. If teams like Carlton, Collingwood or even North got him they would be much improved in my opinion.

I don't know what it would take via a trade to land him. Perhaps with our history of giving the swans such greats as Spriggs, Playfair and Chambers we may get him for a 4th round pick

Offers great flexibility as he's not just a lead-up forward and a great mark - he is an elite runner. That makes him worth high draft picks IMO, or high draft pick plus a good trade.

He is a fantastic leading forward and pretty reliable week to week. I'd say he'd kick a lot more goals in our system than he does in Sydney.

But yes this comes back to who we want as the 3rd leading forward. O'Keefe will either be 27 or 28 next season and we have a young stud in Ryan Gamble ready to go (although O'Keefe 190cm v Gamble a tall playing 184cm is a substantial difference).

Messing around with forward line combinations in my head, two of Mooney, Hawkins, Longergan, Gamble throwing in O'Keefe as the 3rd seems to be a more potent forwardline no matter what combination.

O'Keefe is probably under paid currently behind the other forwards at Sydney. Trading our first round pick for him would not be a bad move considering we get a freebie theoretical top 20 pick in Ranga anyway.

You're spot on. We need to make the most of our window of opportunity with the current crop of players. It would be derelict of the club if we don't actively seek a power forward. Imagine what a Fev or Jon Brown would've done for us on Saturday.

I can also see Lingy playing closer to goal in a couple of years' time as he is a great mark and kick, and played junior footy at full forward.

I'd hate for us to be labelled as the new Essendon of the 1999-2001 period - great underachievers.

Sydney would be interested in 15 to help them make a play for Kerr but as good as he is, O'Keefe is 27 or 28 so that might be paying a little too much.

Geelong would be better off trying to off-load someone for an early 20s pick and try and bundle up that pick with someone like West - but I doubt that would get the deal done anyway.

It is tricky, to get quality you have to part with quality. Better off sticking with Gamble and loading up through the draft unless Sydney give him up for peanuts. The other issue would be 2 top 8 sides dealing with each other. Why would one want to make the other stronger? As such, the deal (rightfully) becomes harder.

I would like to see O'Keefe in a Geelong jumper though - it is a tasty thought. Just can't make it happen in my mind.

I also can't make myself let go of that first round pick prior to the introduction of GC17 and West Sydney.
