St. Kilda next week i rate u guys a huge chance...

But then its the Hawks and the Cats...

Do u guys think u can really win the flag???

There is only one team this season that we haven't been able to touch ... and that's Hawthorn. They flogged us on both occasions.

I think Geelong and Hawthorn are genuine, premiership material. It'd be hard to pass either of these two teams.

If we lost the Elimination Final, I would've been disappointed as I feel we're better than that, but I don't feel that we're the best ... yet.

But stranger things can happen. We were one of the best teams in the 70s and early 80s and never won a flag.

It will be a Geelong v Hawthorn GF. They are clearly the best 2 teams. We could very well win next week against the Saints but then meet our Waterloo in the PF. Given the deficiencies in our list and the suspensions to 2 of our best players, that would be a magnificent result for us. It will also be great experience for some good young players in Mccarthy, Dawes, Anthony, Cox and Brown. If we get 2 good midfielders over summer, then watch out!

Probably not. I think we'll beat St. Kilda, but then we have the Hawks who have flogged us twice this year. With such a young team in I can't really see us beating them, but if we really fire and Buddy has an off kicking day, we're some chance. And we know we match up well against the cats, again it's hard to see us beating them.. but we can dream.

I would have to say the majority feeling is its not probable...

But,

I will be extremelly disappointed if we get done by St Kilda, we should beat them easy.

Then we play Hawthorn riding high after a weeks break... possibly with presti to take Franklin. They have smashed us twice this year so we will happily wear the underdog tag... nothing to lose, we have good finals form over the past 2 years and Hawthorn are living a fairytale year and can easily stumble at the second last post.

All I want is a crack at Geelong. One kick in last years prelim.... 86 points this year... anything can happen.

remember Steven Bradbury!

Its Finals football - anything can happen, we CAN definately go all the way (there are 5 other teams that can go all the way also)

You know there is one thing a lot of people havnt considered. RAIN we get over the saints and then up against the Hawks and it absolutely pours with rain. Then were do we stand. Thoughts

No.
Would a loss to Stkilda be worse than a absolute flogging by the Hawks. I know this sounds negative, but I reckon on what we have on our list we have a real genuine chance (if we get a decent Mid in draft).

How would a huge loss to Hawthorn affect our players

I mean a real thrashing can have devastating effects on a team, I know we have a few out but I am concerned about how we will go against the Hawks.

I think we'll:

Beat Saints
Lose to Hawks

I think that is a pretty just result, Geelong and Hawthorn are the stand out teams and i believe they'll be facing off in the GF.

Wouldn't mind the boys proving me wrong though. :p

Wet weather only helps the better players, Mitchell, Hodge crawford etc. Mind you if it pelts like it did on Anzac day in 2002 and McGough won medal then maybe.

At the start of the year I tipped us to drop out of the eight, and had I have known that Rusling, Reid and Rocca would play a total of about 10 games between them I'd have said 11th or 12th. But I did not expect the impact Brown, Anthony, Wellingham, Dawes, etc. would have in their first season. Given that, a Semi or Preliminary final loss means we went a lot further than I'd have expected.

We do not have the team on the park, particularly in the midfield, to win four straight finals games, including Hawks and Geelong who are obviously the best two teams going 'round at the moment.

But, given what I have seen this year, I am extremely bullish about 2009 and thereafter...

Probably not.

We can beat the Saints, but it's no certainty (like some people are implying).

The Hawks will have to be below their best for us to get up. Their style is terrible for us. We would definitely need Buddy to get injured or just have a shockingly inaccurate night for us to win.

If we somehow got the the Grand Final, anything could happen. But I'd certainly bet on Geelong.

If rocca can get back in two weeks time, i think we have great chance of beating hawks

I really thought as a Carlton supporter starting a thread on the Collingwood board i would have my head bitten off with comments like "i dont see u making the 8" and stuff like that......

so credit where it is due :thumbsu::thumbsu:

No, the Hawks are too much of a barrier to a Grand Final victory. In all honesty, I'd much prefer to play the Cats than them, we have their measure whereas we don't seem to be able to get close to the Hawks. Granted, we played some shocking football against them, but that might be due to the tactics of Clarkson more than anything else. Unless Malthouse has a master stroke in the leadup to the prelim I doubt we will beat them. I reckon we'll get closer than the last two times we played them, though.

No......I think it very unlikely that we beat Hawthorn and then Geelong back to back.

However, each week at this point is all gravy for our football club. We are playing a very young team with the injuries and suspensions of key players and the experience of winning finals football for the likes of Anthony, Dawes, Brown, Pendles, Thomas, Cloke, Goldsack and McCarthy is worth another 15 odd games in experience..........and that's experience that Carlton and Richmond kids are not getting!!!! Heck, even some of their veteran players know nothing about winning finals.

Having said this, although we must maintain the discplines of MM's methods, when the time comes.....we must play with abandon and daring and not be afraid to fail - but rather dare to be great. If the players can do this....who knows? Essendon in '93 gives us all hope!

The heart says yes, the head says no. :(

As others have already mentioned, Hawthorn have really had our measure this year. The one difference this time,if we do make the prelims, is that Presti is back (he might miss this week with a shoulder but should be get up he should be right for the prelim) and he is the human blanket. If anyone in our team can stop Franklin it would be Presti.

Remember Hawks are not a one man team.........Mitchell, Hodge, Sewell, Roughead, Rioli, Crawford etc........and Presti may not be fit.

We must not only break even with Hawks midfield (we have been flogged by them) but we need to dominate them somehow.

The Hawks do have a great spread of talent but they are still the most 'one manned team' in the comp, limit Franklin to a 3 - 4 goal game and you're halfway to beating them. Of course we can't devote too much attention to him because they have many good players, the reason he kicked those bags against us in the first place was because we got smashed in midfield, so you're right, we've got to somehow limit their effectiveness in the middle. But I was merely saying that Presti would be a good matchup on him, well the best we've got anyway, everyone else we've tried have been smashed.

I reckon the boys should account for St kilda next week but Hawthorn are a damm good side and we will really struggle to beat them, Richmond did us no favours by waking them up a few weeks back and they are certain to play Geelong in the GF.
Not that ill be upset with that as i had $200 on the Hawthorn/Geelong GF quinella before round 1 at $13

We should get over the line with St. Kilda.

Hawthorn should get over the line against us. As mentioned already, although Presti has lost some pace, he has the capabilities to frustrate Buddy. MM won't make the same mistake of leaving Buddy 1 out in the 50m arc. We need to drop a player 15 to 20 meters in front of him

Secondly, Mitchell needs a very hard tag. He absolutely smashes us in the clearances.

Lastly, we need to take the Hawks on and run the ball down the corridor. Hawks closed the corridor on us in the last game because they had us covered from the beginning. We need to apply the pressure at the start so that we have some ascendancy. If not, our finals campaign will end there.

Without sounding complacent, I am proud of our boys for their achievements to date.

Cats will win the flag IMO. Too many in form stars.

In any conditions, the Hawks will win by 10 goals at least. They and Geelong are well in front of us. From about Round 12 this year, it has been one of the most obvious GFs(Haw v Geel) that I can ever remember.

If a miracle happens and we beat both StKilda and Hawthorn, the GF would be our 4th final in a row and we would be a chance to lose by the greatest margin in finals history.

If we can beat the Saints this week, I will be absolutely rapt in our efforts, given the problems we have had this year.
