I've asked this question on Nicks, but I'm re-posting here just to see what people's responses are to my question.

Not sure what the overwhelming feeling is with others, but I'm starting to despise the trade period and the drama surrounding it especially when it involves the media carrying on hysterically about players movements as if it's 1996 or 2006 when players requesting a trade wasn't a common occurrence.

I used to love it years ago and enjoy the buildup and surprise because players moving clubs was less frequent and more unpredictable when it did happen and there was genuine excitement and shock when something big transpired.

Now, it's become a media wankfest for the likes of Barrett and co to talk shit and make up rumours. Players seem to request trades left, right and centre without blinking an eye, and as a supporter it just reaffirms why we shouldn't become emotionally invested in our favourite players like we once did, because no one is indispensable as the Sam Mitchell situation has shown.

There's no denying football is purely a business now and the players wanted more power to dictate their careers so I understand the direction we're heading in, but it leaves me cold and somewhat deflated by it all. Maybe I'm alone on this, but I just don't enjoy it anymore even in an instance when we recruit a great player for example.

It reminds me too much of the NFL or EPL with constant rumours and innuendo and just when it seems like we're on the right track, it's back to square one with future planning. It feels like this time of the year is bigger than the season itself at times.

Maybe the news of Jonathan Marsh and various others wanting to leave has prompted this reaction, but the introduction of free agency has had a flow on effect in all forms of player movements whether it be free agency itself or trading which is becoming all too frequent and predictable.

I don't hate it. I think the heartburn is that the AFL and fans are trying to be half pregnant at the moment. We trying to treat players like professionals and free adults while still wanting them to be tied to our club the same way we are as fans.

I reckon all players should be free agents from the end of their initial contract, with the draft and salary cap alone keeping some equity.

So, thinking that, can't really complain if players want to move around. Love the club, love the players while their here, but accept they're mostly not going to be lifers.

Love It. As much as Watching Games.

Yes it can suck Big Time when Losing a Favorite Player like Marsh but you see what club does to try and get better

I couldn't give a stuff.
Just happy to trust the Club to do the job to the best of their ability:)
And welcome whoever comes along:D

Does that make me a terrible supporter?

I agree. But players can't be requesting trades home in the middle of their contract (Marsh for example). It goes both ways.

I think we need to mature as a sport, understand that lists change from year to year and as long as they give their full commitment while at the club (think Dangerfield) then it's ok.

Not a fan, the whole FA, trade, draft, rookie period just goes on for too long.

I hate it, and I hate what the AFL is becoming - just like the EPL with players moving every six seconds. Gone are things like loyalty and trust. It's more and more like a business now. Depressing.

So basically we've been reduced to supporting colours that are on a Jumper? I hate that idea. I like having favourite players. When I was a kid I would have been shattered if Daicos had been traded. The AFL really needs to build in reward for continuity and loyalty - like they have with the father-son rule. Otherwise we'll end up like the EPL which I can't watch.

I love it.

Coming more and more Americanized as each trade period happens

Short Compared to other Sports.

I do think the Time Between FA/Trade Period to the Draft is to far apart

I don't dislike the trade period per se, but the length of time from the GF to the Draft two months later and the Americanization of the trade/draft period. Why can't the Draft be held on the evening of the day following the completion of the trade period?. It is not as if the clubs do not know who they would like to draft.

We are not going to change the reporting of the trading period (by journalists) as like politics, it is now a 24 hour news cycle with internet, twitter etc that we constantly want news and updates and the likes of Barrett etc are only meeting our demand for news or rumours.

There is no loyalty in football now and if there was, the last remnant died this trade period with Hawthorn no longer being the family club, based on loyalty. A contract means nothing now for player or club. A club required to pay-out the the player if the player is delisted or traded prior to the completion the end of the contract. However, it should work both ways. When a player decides to walk away from a contract (unless there is an agreement), there should be a financial penalty against the player or the new club such as a transfer fee (being 1/2 of the player's outstanding contract).

What so let's try and be more like the NRL? A more even competition with out the same sides winning the flag each year. But with out all the new equalisation strategies how are Gill and co going to justify there pay packets?

Our 2010 premiership team included a premiership player from the Swans, a former captain from the Saints and a journeyman from North/Freo. Who wants to give it back?

LOVE trade period.. much more fun than watching or talking about us playing footy during the last 3 seasons.

Trade period always brings back the hope. I'm just hoping that next year we will get past 4 minutes into round 1 before the wheels all fall off.
