I have just been sorting through some of my old cd's and i've fallen in love with Billy again.

Workers Playtime (1988) is a classic!:thumbsu:

Yep.

Never would have picked you to have any taste.

Valentines day is over

Some day boy you'll reap what you've sown
You'll catch a cold and you'll be on your own
And you will see that what's wrong with me
Is wrong with everyone that
You want to play your little games on

Poetry and flowers pretty words and threats
You've gone to the dogs again and i'm not placing bets
On you coming home tonight anything but blind
If you take me for granted then you must expect to find
Surprise, surprise

Valentine's day is over, it's over
Valentine's day is over

If you want to talk about it well you know where the phone is
Don't come round reminding me again how brittle bone is
God didn't make you an angel the devil made you a man
That brutality and economy are related now i understand
When will you realise that as above so below there is no love

For the girl with the hour glass figure
Time runs out very fast
We used to want the same things but that's all in the past
And lately it seems that as it all gets tougher
Your ideal of justice just becomes rougher and rougher

Thank you for the things you bought me thank you for the card
Thank you for the things you taught me when you hit me hard
That love between two people must be based on understanding
Until that's true you'll find your things
All stacked out on the landing, surprise, surprise

Linder and I have agreed previously on this Board that "Levi Stubb's Tears" is a piece of utter beauty. He is great - he is about due to tour here again. He seems to do it about every three years.

ALL YOU FASCISTS BORN TO LOSE!

My favorite song on that record is "Greetings to the new brunette"

I’m celebrating my love for you
With a pint of beer and a new tattoo
And if you haven’t noticed yet
I’m more impressionable when my cement is wet

Brilliant songwriter.

I did'nt make the first team
I made the first team laugh

I did'nt need a dictionary to know the meaning of unrequited

That song he wrote about being in Melbourne during the footy season that he wrote with the Blokes is a beauty as well

That's my favourite Bragg song! :thumbsu:

I love his lyrics:

In the end it took me a dictionary, to find out the meaning of unrequited...

The revolution is just a T-Shirt away...

How can you lie there and think of England, when you don't even know who's in the team?

My top five of his would be:

1. Greetings To The New Brunette
2. Great Leap Forwards.
3. New England
4. The Saturday Boy
5. The Warmest Room

i get a shiver down my spine everytime i hear this song.

One leap forward, two leaps back
Will politics get me the sack?

WAITING FOR THE GREAT LEAP FORWARDS

here comes the future and you can't run from it
If you've got a blacklist I want to be on it

WAITING FOR THE GREAT LEAP FORWARDS

It's a mighty long way down rock 'n roll
From Top of the Pops to drawing the dole

WAITING FOR THE GREAT LEAP FORWARDS

If no one out there understands
Start your own revolution and cut out the middleman:)

WAITING FOR THE GREAT LEAP FORWARDS

In a perfect world we'd all sing in tune
But this is reality so give me some room

WAITING FOR THE GREAT LEAP FORWARDS

So join the struggle while you may
The Revolution is just a T-shirt away

WAITING FOR THE GREAT LEAP FORWARDS

ALL YOU FASCISTS BORN TO LOSE!

let's revisit those fine lyrics contra...

LEVI STUBB'S TEARS

With the money from her accident
She bought herself a mobile home
So at least she could get some enjoyment
Out of being alone
No one could say that she was left up on the shelf
It's you and me against the World kid she mumbled to herself

CHORUS:
When the world falls apart some things stay in place
Levi Stubbs' tears run down his face

She ran away from home in her mother's best coat
She was married before she was even entitled to vote
And her husband was one of those blokes
The sort that only laughs at his own jokes
The sort a war takes away
And when there wasn't a war he left anyway

Norman Whitfield and Barratt Strong
Are here to make everything right that's wrong
Holland and Holland and Lamont Dozier too
Are here to make it all okay with you

One dark night he came home from the sea
And put a hole in her body where no hole should be
It hurt her more to see him walking out the door
And though they stitched her back together they left her heart in pieces on the floor

When the world falls apart some things stay in place
She takes off the Four Tops tape and puts it back in its case
When the world falls apart some things stay in place
Levi Stubbs' tears...

Play loud and play often.:thumbsu:

She married him and destroyed all my hopes
Of a two-up, two-down, two point five
and a dish on the roof for the soaps
But I saw them at the hardware store
He looked boring and she looked bored

Yeah, it's awesome. Not so much a song as a monologue. Very, very touching.

She began going out with Mr. Potato Head

It was when I saw her in he car park

With his coat around her shoulders that I realized

I went home and thought about the two of them together

Until the bathwater went cold around me

I thought about her eyes and the curve of her breasts

And about the point where their bodies met"
"

"And then one day it happened ...... She cut her hair and I stopped loving her"

This is in my faves cos a muso friend of mine might be interested in the Levi Stubbs Tears lyrics, espec the bridge where he had to make something up when he played it live because he couldnt quite make them out.
