De Boer last season was the clubs leading tackler. He holds the ball in the forward line,he does exactly what Ross wants him to do.
He is a role player and plays his part to perfection. He is not in the leadership group for nothing and if Ross follows his normal game style De Boer will be part of the 22.

Wasn't just the club's leading tackler but the most efficient in the league in a forward position :P

I think De Boer is a battler with few skills ( other than tackling , can not kick further than 35 meters, never kicks a goal on the run ) and as much as I love Suban( beautiful kicking skills ) , he just does not get enough possessions and is very inconsistent. I can see them two being replaced for Crosier & Sheridan. I would also love to see Sutcliffe ,Sylvia & Gumbleton( hoping he clicks), Pearce C fitted into the team. Not sure who you leave out but everyone needs to be putting in 110% else they're in trouble. Players who should be making sure of that are Duffield, Hill ( very inconsistent ),Mayne (not enough goals, with Gumby ,may improve ),Pearce D ( kicking skills need to get better in games). Other players who may also come into contention are Smith, Grey, Apeness & Pearce A.

Suban is now our player with the longest contract (through to end of 2017), it would be quite unusual to give a guy a 4 year contract if he wasn't doing everything expected of him. Maybe he cuts the oranges really well?

Meanwhile, de Boer is in the leadership group and whilst that doesn't make him undroppable, it seems to indicate that the players and staff think he is doing his role.

37.12 For the season not enough for you?

What about 110 tackles?

Mayne is coming off arguably his best season. He was one of our best players this season. Goals are not the be all and end all of Mayne's role.

So much opinion backed by so little fact.

Agree with Redgum on D Pearce and Suban, just far too inconsistent at times. Both have attributes that could push us to that next step but they're spoarodically seen and if they don't improve quickly then Crozier and Sheridan will be knocking on the door for their spot in the 22.

D Pearce was one of our better players last year. The only thing inconsistent about him was his terrible goal kicking. IIRC he scored at 25% or something.

It's pretty much impossible he'll kick that badly again this year.

The players in line for promotion into the best 22 are only a few because of the strength of the existing best 22 .
Clarke had a poor Grand Final but a fantastic Semi and elimination final .
De boer had a poor finals campaign but is still in the leadership group so he must have done something right as far as the coaches and players are concerned .
Players that are knocking on the door are Taberner , Silvia ,Crozier and Gumbeton so who are they going to replace
Crozier may replace Suitcliffe or Sheridan
Silvia may replace D Pearce or Mayne
Gumbelton may replace Clarke
Taberner is very close in the race with Gumbelton
So who else is shining that bright right now to come into our Grand Final team .
Ibbotson and Clancee are the obvious ones so who do they replace .
Smith is not even close with his kicking
Hannath is very close in the race with Gumbelton if Clarke can't be fit for the opening round .

The competition for a spot in the back 6 , Well Good Luck trying to pick who wins out.
The front 6 is the big question mark as stated there are a number of contenders .
The other more important question for me is the middle 6 .
Barlow , Fyfe , Mundy Crowley and Sandi are rock solid
Suban , D pearce along with Hill are A graders .
Walters is being groomed to go through the midfield as well
Sutcliffe , Duffield and Sheridan have been often used as the sub of off the bench .
The postions in the team will be harder to hold onto once Griffen and Clarke are fit .
the big unknown is Morrabito .
We have never been stronger so lets enjoy it and let the selectors have the sleepless nights .

He had a disposal efficiency of 65% and when you get 70% of your possessions uncontested thats not good enough. Bit of a stretch to say he was one of our better players too when he didn't make our b&f top ten which was already missing Pav, Sandi, Luke and Ibbo due to injury.

Pretty gutsy post Redgum. Definitely looking to push a few buttons I would say.

I do agree that there is a bit of a challenge thrown down to a few players (eg de Boer, Pearce x 2, Suban) with the recruitment of Sylvia. Also there are the impressive emerging guys in Neale, Sutcliffe, Crozier and Sheridan. The future may be coming, but Sylvia has already arrived. Be on your game, or you put your selection at risk.

I don't mind that at all.

Regarding Mayne, I think you are way off the mark. Absolutely critical to our forward line both offensively and defensively. I am of the opinion that offensively it may be a little more difficult for him this year. Last year he was often our first choice avenue to goal, which he is unlikely to be this year, and he is more likely to get a match-up well suited to him. If he was playing against our backline we would be looking at playing Ibbotson on him, not Dawson (Gumbleton), MacPharlin (Pavlich) or MJ (Clarke). And Ibbotson would be a good match-up. Anyway, I think 2014 will be more difficult for Mayne in terms of goal-scoring.

This season there is just too much quality to fit into 22. Consequently It would not surprise me to see a few of the following. Older players being rested. Fan favourites not getting games. Surprise selections for specific teams.

But all in all I think of our most likely forward brigade there are four lock in players when fit (Pav, Mayne, Balla, SonSon) and de Boer will be fighting of Sylvia, Crozier, Gumbelton and others for only one of them. Conceivably the other will be a "resting" ruck. And whilst you might use one bench allocation for a pinch hitting high forward/mid type, that is probably going to be filled by someone not listed so far in this discussion. Someone such as C Pearce, Morabito or Neale, someone who's mostly a mid but is happy to float forward.
