Seems to be a lot of talk about it but no thread, just to tidy things up thought i'd start one up.
Anyway - he could be up for trade, do you think he should be?
But if he's not under what circumstances does he make the best 22 and what would it take to force him out?

I think you got to take someone out if we are going to try and get a 2nd tall forward. Maybe he's injured or run out of gas, but Deboers last few weeks have been pretty average.

then why does he lead the Dockers in their tackles? what have you been watching?

He's in our leadership group for a reason. He's not being traded, it's that simple. Every team has a player like De Boer, every team. He's best 22 in my opinion, it's obvious hes struggled lately, but every player goes through a form slump.

He's looking a good chance of becoming our version of Andrew mcqualter or Robert eddy. In fairness, he kinda hung onto his spot because of circumstance. I suspect he's like #24 in the squad pecking order. Almost certainly wouldn't have played if Clancee and Ibbo were available.

Can he take it to another level? Probably not
Can he become our number one tagger? Yes
Has he got the drive to do either? Yes
Does he bring more to the table than what is seen by us regular folk? Yes
Can he find a niche? Probably
Will we get anything decent if we let him go? Probably not
Next year he will again be the number defensive forward but after that may become our number one tagger. He is smart, selfless and has some great tutelage from kirk and Crowley. Subans offensive side is greater but de boers mental capacity offsets this.

I get all this, but really who were hawthorn's best players yesterday. Apart from gunston, they were lake, birchell and hodge. Truth is our forwards had bad games and the forward defensive pressure, so good through most of the season, was poor in the game that mattered most.

I understand it's easy in hindsight, but It's also easy to think Crozier or Mellington or even Sheridon would have maybe been better options than deBoar yesterday. IMO he's comfortably the weakest link.

Hodge had a respectable 21 posessions but went at 57% de.....
Never mind. Statistics are are bullshit. Crozier will go alright. Jelling ton may have missed the bus and I we Sheridan in the midfield.

His spot as a forward will come under increasing pressure from Crozier, but as it stands he's best 22.

I can see him shifting into the midfield within the next couple of years when Crowley is finished.

When the whole team plays the manic pressure role - his expertise become par for the course for a in the side, so other than that he doesn't have a lot going for him. He doesn't have the tank to play a crowley-type run with role. He's struggled to accumulate the ball when pushing up the ground this season.

I don't see pressure coming from Max Duffy who's been a massive disappointment thus far, I actually see his spot being taken by Schloithe more so than Crozier.

Crozier will win his own spot, most likely at the expense of Pearce as the years roll on.

I think there's at least 5 guys in our squad who didn't play Saturday who will get the nod ahead of DeBoer next year,

C Pearce
Ibbotson
Crozier
Morabito
Sheridan

And that's without considering Kepler Bradley or anyone who we might pick up via trades or free agency.

I have always been a massive fan of Deboer.. but towards the latter part of this season I have come around to the thinking that if we are to improve, its guys like Pig who have to be replaced by more class who can also give his pressure around the forwardline. In no way would I like to see him gone altogether, but he must become a fringe player in future years or we aren't lifting in general

Needs a massive pre-season to build tank and skills, Clancee Pearce, Walters, prove it can be done.
If he can become more versatile, could be used in several positions, the writing is on the wall and the
youngsters are ready to pounce.

There's always a chance he'll improve out of sight this off season as well. He may see the pressure being applied and rally with it. Either way, he's still a great team player and we won't trade/de-list him

But this is actually the problem as I see it, if those players you name had been available then it probably would have been Neale and Suttcliffe who missed rather than DeBoer. Neale is an exquisitely skilled player who has poise in traffic and creates opportunity for others. DeBoer is a wrecking ball but he can't kick over a jam tin. I just watched last quarter and he had a shot straight in front from 20M and kicked into the man guarding space, Neale would have calmly slotted it or stepped the guy.
At some point pure effort has to be replaced by class.
I'm not saying you don't need guys like DeBoer but that if you have the choice of someone that gives similar effort but with better skills you go with them which makes DeBoers position tenuous to me.

Stupid Post.
DeBoer would be in the top 25 of every AFL Squad

Should delete thread - He was U18 all Aust Capt, he is in our leadership team and performs a role - he was on McVeigh in prelim and shut him out first 3 quarters till he was subbed (he copped a heavy knock tackling Maljeste). I reckon he is one of a few who may replace Pav as capt...

With the team looking to make improvements it's about who would come out of the side.
My 3 players that come into question are:
1. MDB
2. Sutcliffe
3. Suban

IF we picked up say Colin Sylvia, he's a very good midfielder that can go forward. Instantly up's our scoring threat and another talent to rotate through the middle.

I totally rate MDB, but it just becomes a question of 'Where can we improve?' or 'Where do we need to improve?'
