Does this still count as a throw?

Have mentioned the prevalence of these sorts of throws not being called nearly often enough:

Yes, amongst that AFL media journalistic fluff, they almost completely ignored the fact that this is a throw; you cannot give a ball to a teammate like that (nor can you take it).

Anyone here that plays or umpires know if this rule has changed, or can recall examples of it being paid?

I just can't remember the last time i saw it paid. Happens often in packs with someone grabbing the ball from a teammate.

The umpire was probably just blindsided and let it go rather than guess, considering it was totally meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

Umpire was right on the spot.

15.3.2 Incorrect Disposal and Payment of Free Kick
When the football is in play, a Free Kick shall be awarded against a Player who hands the football to another Player or throws the football

Knowing how they like to muddy the waters with their interpretations and over-complicate things, my guess is the thinking is along the lines of 'Shaw took the ball off Mumford rather than Mumford handing it to Shaw, so play on...'

Of course it should be a free kick.

Agree with the OP. not just in this instance, this happens all the time (just not as blatant!). And yes, my team does it too

The handpass, as iconic as it is, I feel should disappear as a rule for correct disposal.

Not that I want to see it go, more because it's too easy for the umps to be blindsided and unable to correctly call it.

The over the head handball where all the momentum of the ball comes from the arms and not the ball being punched has somehow become acceptable, when I played (long time ago granted) that was a throw every time.
A lot of handballs today there is no seperation between ball and fist and they are a handpush at best.

This weeks rule was in the back while kicking

Yet Kennedy (Josh) was clearly pushed in the back late in the GWS game .......no kick

Rule of the week ....it should actually be announced ...actually tell us what it is

Call me odd but ya know what I'm happy the odd throw gets missed

The game flows ....including the overhead handballs

Sure pick out the ones they see which I'm sure they do but they can't guess if they can't see it

Technically you could argue that Mummy didn't hand the ball to Shaw, rather Shaw took it from him.

Same same ...incorrect disposal

Who did what doesn't matter really ...was obvious but clearly the ump didn't see it
