THE Western Bulldogs and Essendon have expressed strong interest in Collingwood's uncontracted defender Richard Cole.

While the Magpies have indicated they wish to retain Cole and rebuild the career that went backwards in 2005, it is believed that his re-signing with Collingwood, while the most likely scenario, is not certain.

While Essendon's interest in Cole comes as no surprise — board member Beverly Knight was the teenage Cole's legal guardian when he moved to Melbourne from the Northern Territory and he has a close relationship with ex-Bomber great Michael Long — the more interesting development is the interest of Rodney Eade's club, which has identified Cole among the small pool of uncontracted players with some appeal.

Collingwood football manager Neil Balme said last night that Cole was "very much a required player," and the club was "a fair way down the track" in discussions with his management. Cole already has had his end-of-season meeting with Magpie coach Mick Malthouse.

Balme said Cole had indicated that he wished to remain at Collingwood, where he made steady progress in his second and third seasons (2003 and 2004) before losing form and focus in 2005.

The close bond with board member Knight once led Essendon to actually request a change to the father-son rule, on the basis that Knight, as a club director with some years of service and the then teenager's legal guardian, had some parental claim on him.

Cole managed only eight games in 2005, succumbing to a combination of injury and poor form and spending the latter stages of the season in the VFL until a broken wrist ended his season.

He had become a regular in 2003 and 2004, playing across half-back. His 2004 season was his best, when he finished sixth in the best and fairest and played all 22 games — an output that made his dismal 2005 all the more mysterious.

Cole, originally from Tennant Creek, moved to Melbourne to play with Eastern Ranges in the under-18's and was Collingwood's first-round draft choice in the 2001 draft. While his speed, power and aggression are appealing, decision-making with the ball has been perceived as the area of his game most in need of improvement.

I don't know what it is with why everyone wants to get rid of Cole but I don't think we should and I believe he has potential. He has a bad year and everyone wants him gone. You watch it come back and bite us just like the Mal Michael era....

I think our club was looking for some attention.

You want more than Brad Murphy. We wont pay more.

Hence, someone at the club wanted some media attention. The Don's may actaully be after him.

There has been word of a swap with Birss for weeks now

Anyone have an opinion on who the better player is?

That to me looks like we should not be trading Birss at all.

Yeah but thats a good year for Birss and a shocker for Cole, who has more upside?

I'd try and get a 2nd rund draft pick for him or try adding a draft pick and get Power from the Dogs

Hopefully Sheeds is stupid enough to give up a higher draft pick for him though

Richie was taken at pick 11 and has ability, if he can get back to his 2004 form he is certianly worth a first round pick. And here's some advice Longshanks, by all means come onto the Collingwood board and contribute periodicly but the last couple of days you've become an internet stalker. Go away and come back when you're feeling better, it's either that or a restraining order from one of our Mods.

Is that a joke?

gunner go away you troll, if i can remember correctly coke was pick 10-11 and has only had 1 bad year.. 1 bad year means nothing when he is only 22.. Gunner before you come in here with your trolling and sarcasm do some heckin' research on the player your bagging.. cole deserves another year based on his 04 form if we cannot get a 1st rounder.. if clubs want discount players on 1 bad year they can think again..

Essendon's first pick is pick 7.
Cole isn't worth that.

Realistically I think Collingwood would be looking for a pick between 15-20 for Cole or a young developing tall defender.
I honestly can't see Cole adding anything to our list that isn't already there, would rather we concentrated our efforts elsewhere.

However, I think this article might be a classic case of Cole's manager putting it out there to put a bit of pressure on the Pies and add a few more $$$'s to Cole's contract.

I just did some basic maths to find out that 26.4% of Richard Cole's possessions in 2005 were errors. (23/87)

Shane Birss is running at the rate of 11.6% with 20 errors from 172 possessions.

That is 15% more accuracy, an outstanding amount and something that we need a lot more of.

(Where did you get those stats btw?)

He cost us a first rounder and if not for a shocker of a 2005 thats what his value should be. Heres a stock market tip my friend never sell low. Didn't Essendon kindly offer Walsh (who they subsequently delisted) and a 2nd round pick for West just before the trade deadline last year? Why didn't the Doggies jump at that offer, what were they thinking?

hoggy cole is worth more than birss, birss is not the type of player to compaire cole too.. cole might take another year to come on... then he will be a tough ass running backman that will cruch the sh!@ out of ppl... somthing sheedy would love, a real hitman.. Byron type with less pace but more punch.. cole would never get us a pick 7 longy, but he is worth more than some fringe player like birss.. pick 10-13 would be ideal.. cannot c it happening though as he did have a really bad year..

Birss is a fringe player with the Dogs, Cole wasn't even close with us and we finished 15th.

Cole would be a fringe player at Essendon as well.
He isn't as good as Welsh, Mark Johnson, McVeigh and honestly I haven't seen anything from Cole to suggest that Paul Thomas wouldn't get a game ahead of him as well. Especially with the way Thomas has finished off the season at Essendon and now Bendigo.

Pick 10-13 is well over the odds for Cole. Barry Hall was traded for pick 13.
