One of the most satisfying home and away wins I’ve ever attended in over 50 years supporting the club. Very cocky Hawthorn supporters everywhere. I reckon we had 15,000 of the 60,000 there last night. At least we were able to have good natured banter with the ones around us.
I went to the MCC members area for the first time in my life. So I dressed up, wore a collar and blazer I’d found in an opp shop. I looked like I was dressed as a respectable MCC guest. Except I was in the wrong century Families and the oldies on level 3 Marvel have better manners, swear less, have less tattoos and are better dressed. And I thought you could buy full strength beer cans in the members, wrong. Great spot though, right at Bulldogs race and couldn’t have been closer for the quarter time wrestle.
To ride that wave of momentum and excitement as every Bulldog on the field just kept trying and pushing. We could feel the intensity of every moment. Heroes everywhere. For us we just loved JOD and Coff and all the backline.

Wow, an outpost of civilisation at the football. If only it could spread.

If there’s any comparison between draft picks that year it’ll be North picking Duursma when the next picks were Watson, Sanders, Windsor, Curtin, Caddy, O’Sullivan and Gothard. Sanders is proving to be well worth his draft position

I think Watson is more talented than Sanders. But i happen to value what's between the ears higher than talent. And I think Sanders is a gem, and is exactly the kind of player you build champion teams around.

I feel this is our best victory of the past three weeks. The close games, both at Docklands, against Melbourne and Collingwood were achieved after we gave up leads and allowed the opposition back in to the game. Against Melbourne we were 33 points ahead and they came back and hit the lead during the last quarter and could have won. Against Collingwood we were 25 points up and they came back into the game and could have won during the final minutes. Against Hawthorn it was us who had to make the comeback, which we managed, and then we held the lead and won a close one at the MCG.

Potentially, we could have won this game by one point if Weddle had kicked a goal instead of a behind with two minutes to play. Jason Dunstall mentioned that if this result had occurred, our narrow margin victories this season would then read 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Seemed for years teams thought they could bully us as we had a team full of nice guys especially around 2023-2025. Sellwood and Lewis have that grunt in them this team has missed for a long time. Having boys that can fly the flag and get the boys up and about during a game is massive

The Coffield resurrection has had a lot to do with our form turnaround.

Allowing Lobb to play 2nd ruck means we don’t fall apart the moment we lose our starting ruck. He can go forward for representation there or go back for support if needed.

Our previous Hawks game, Bevo was still super committed to Lobb remaining in the backline no matter what. Which in fairness wasn’t that outrageous a stance given how weak our backline was looking overall. Hence the Emmett madness. But Bevo receiving these performances from Coffield has given him the confidence to change that stance, and move Lobb around as required.

It also benefits Croft who doesn’t have to play positions he isn’t comfortable in, we’re seeing the rewards there as well.

Without Coffield playing like this, we can’t turn to Gardner for obvious reasons, and there isn’t a that much faith in Buss right now either (he’s also injury prone regardless of form). So Lobb would still be there and we’d still have some big structural issues everywhere else.

Given Coffields injury history it’s very nervy relying on this for the rest of the season though. But I think the lesson would be to give Buss a go before panicking and returning Lobb to the backline full time.

Coffield was a good player at St. Kilda, have a look at the last quarter of the 2019 elimination final, he basically won the game for the saints, he should stay in the side.

Not just saying this because of his terrific final act, but I will happily eat humble pie about Coffield. Really didn’t see what he offered. This year he’s been building and he’s really now repaying the faith the coaches have in him. Great to see and long may it continue.

Yep, same. He was the most clear delist material I've ever seen last year, completely turned it around.

Very happy I went to the game last night!

I don’t think we exactly played out of our skins to win that, which is promising. But we exhibited a ton of resilience and fortitude to grind it out.

The second quarter was frustrating, as from up in the stands you could sense the momentum had shifted to the Hawks but instead of settling and bunkering down we were just itching to bite off too much to get things going our way and eventually made enough little blues in a row to give way to a run of Hawks goals.

Our decision making when kicking was baffling at times throughout the game, we took a number of really poor options each quarter and handed the Hawks a fair few repeat I50s.

I see this as a positive though, as we won but still have some real scope for improvement.

Less experienced players like Arty are just consistent games away from being really good. He’s does everything you could ask for from an effort perspective and does so many good things, but still makes some little mistakes that really hurt us, like running himself into trouble a couple of times or burning Kennedy pretty badly by not handballing when Kennedy was clear on goal (very hard to see on the broadcast). These are experience and not ability issues.

My take away is our lids should stay firmly on, but there’s no reason not to be optimistic. The team is showing tons of fight and is winning games despite not totally hitting their straps and relying on a number of kids.

Yeah our ball use in rebounding from D50 is still our #1 issue for mine. More than a handful of Hawks goals were caused this way.
