Interesting situation unfolding for 2018 with our list and it's depth. We've got our midfield standouts in Jones, Viney, Oliver, and I expect Petracca to roll through their a lot more also. A fit Brayshaw also looks pretty appealing as a rotation, and Lewis will be thereabouts.

Balic, Maynard, Salem can all potentially play midfield, as can Melksham, ANB and Stretch. For the first time in a long time we have depth. I like Tyson, but I really think he needs a huge 2018. A season where he is talked about as being a top 10 league midfielder. Attributes? Definitely has them. Application? Think at times he can be in the same ilk of Watts.

What do people expect from him next year? Personally I think it's great there will a lot of pressure for lots of players to get a starting spot in our 22 next year. Tyson is one that I think is definitely in the gun.

Discuss.

Strongly agree, in the past being able to find the ball meant you're an automatic inclusion in our starting 22 but I feel that's no longer the case.

Decision making/disposal, defensive acts and attack on the ball are now also key components - all areas Tyson needs to improve in.

I personally feel he will struggle but happy to be proven wrong!

Agree that he needs a big season or others will go past him, we have plenty of inside mids on the list. Not sure he will ever be a top 10 midfielder though. Good ball winner but kicking is (at times) a liability and isn't particularly quick or strong overhead. Majority of our developing mids have at least a bit of flexibility in terms of position, feels like it's inside mid or bust with Tyson.

Hasn't quite developed into the player I think plenty of us thought he would in 2014.

Hope to be proven wrong but wouldn't be surprised to see him as a depth/VFL player by the end of the season.

I think we should have considering trading him this season. Still has value & with JM at the helm we might have netted a 4th rounder for him. ;)
He is the type of player Essendon need though. Maybe we could have done a straight swap for one of their outside players.

I don't think the club would give up on him just yet. But I think 2018 needs to yield a pretty decent return from him. With Watts shown the door id think he would be a bit wary about being mediocre next year.

His in the starting 22 at round 1 for sure but alot of talent knocking at the door.
Out of all the mids his probably who id drop first atm

Also like to take this moment to reflect how good Melkshams last half of the season was. His a walk up start in the 22 aswell

Yep. No longer a guaranteed part of our best 22. Plenty of depth now means he needs to do all the right things at the start of the season to keep his spot. Maynard and Balic breathing down his neck. Should be doing nothing but kicking practice all summer long. Improving that side of his game will go a long way in keeping his spot in our midfield.

Melksham was amazing last year in the second half. He was plodding along for a while there then he just clicked into gear. He is an aggressive, long kicking half forward/midfielder that has some serious Kent about him. He is also one of our most experienced players with the game time he has had over his career.

Melksham is in the top 3 picked every week whilst he is playing like he was last year. Love him.

Totally agree. Really keen to see how Balic goes and also Maynard after another pre season. There is some serious competition in our group now.

Would be nice to play him more on the inside next year, he's much better utilised on the inside than on the outside. We have a lot of depth for spots in the middle which is healthy competition for our side. Going to be interesting to see how Tyson fares and how our midfield evolves in 2018.

Theory: he is a player that absolutely needs a full preseason. Every time he doesn't get it, he struggles.

Not sure Balic is going to be pushing for a spot just yet. Bit odd he only has a one year deal - you'd think if the club were confident they'd picked up a roughy (or were going to give the guy some time to develop), he'd have signed on for a few years.

I don't see him getting more game time in the middle, with Vanders an Maynard coming into the side and Brayshaw and Trac hopefully spending more time forward blokes like Jones and Tyson will have to play at half back/forward even more

Yep it might be hard seeing him play more time on the inside when you consider our increasing depth in the middle which is only a good thing for us as a team anyway. It's important that we develop flexibility within our side particularly with our midfielders. Tyson's inside game is certainly better than his outside game but I can see why the club played him and Jones in a more outside role last season to accomodate the development of our emerging inside midfielders (Oliver in particular) while building the flexibility of our side.

I think I had Jones at HB in my starting 22

Balic might ne having a rehab/get your head straight year. Upon completion to a satisfactory level - 3 year deal.
Maybe we're just careful after the marshmallow calf photographer rogered the salary cap payout system by breaking a gentlemans agreement.

Don't think he will be left in rehab. Suspect he gets every chance.

The guy can play.

**** me dead.

Tysons a good player.

Saying he will struggle to get minutes with blokes like VDB and Maynard coming in is ridiculous - those two arent full time mids in a finals team based on this year and last for Vanders.

His problem is like Viney he is very one-dimensional (You could say that about Oliver but he has more to his game than Tyson and will rest forward in the years to come), and Viney is a better player than him. He isn't a hack and I'd be surprised if he doesn't play at least 18 games injury permitting but I've always felt he is expendable due to the depth we have in his position. You can be sure VDB won't be taking time off him though, VDB is more likely to take Watts' spot up forward.

Yeah I don’t see that happening at all. Tyson’s our equal second best pure inside mid. There’s little likelihood he plays less midfield time next year.

Behind Oliver and Viney as a pure ball winner.

Behind Jones, Petracca, Lewis and (probably) ANB for versatility.

He's a handy player to have but not necessarily integral to our success going forward. Could be on the fringe by the end of the year...also could still be best 22, depending on how others develop.

At the very least we'll be glad we have him if one of Oliver or Viney go down for an extended period.

I've been thinking about Tyson and where he fits in the team this off season. I really like him and think he is easily best 22, but he is ranked 7th in the league for turners and 10th for clangers and out of that top 10 he is probably the least impactful so the clangers stand out.

What i've noticed is he isn't confident delivering inside 50 or being the distributor after a chain of handballs so often he goes 1 too many and turns it over with a handball to a teammates back. It's not his kicking directly that results in the turnover, but indirectly because he probably doesn't think he'll hit the target.

There's a fine line between over-possessing it and bombing it into 50, so i hope he gets better in that regard and gets in the position to have a ping on the run more often, which is one of his strengths.

Clearances are his top attribute but like others said he needs to be versitile. He seems to be running defensively more often and he averages 25 touches with not too much variation between his best and worse games so he is a solid player. He is never going to be a star and we don't need him to be, instead just another solid inside mid and link player, but he would much more valuable if he was confident (and better) in his kicking.
