But Don was not a one-dimensional career politician; he was also a family man, spent time overseas and was a talented sportspersonplaying a few games for the Fitzroy football club, playing district cricket and dabbling in professional sprinting. Perhaps his greatest claim to sporting fame was as the last batsmen to partner Sir Donald Bradman in the 1963 PMs XI against England.

WHO IS the greatest man to ever play league football?

There are some worthy contenders. Fighter pilot and Melbourne dual-premiership player Keith ‘Bluey’ Truscott would win some votes. Others may consider another Demon, Jim Stynes, for his work with youth, while politicians like Maurice Rioli, Don Chipp, Ray Groom or Neil Trezise might have their supporters.

What a lovely man he was. Back in the 1972, I had some private dealings with him. He then was Minister for Customs. A hopeless, but incredibly intelligent junkie I knew, called Bill, wanted his help. Bill asked me to go to Don's house in Sandringham with him. The purpose of the visit was to pass on some information to Customs about some drug dealings. When we arrived at Don's house, there was a senior public servant from Customs there, who proceeded to interview Bill. During this interview Don said nothing, and eventually showed the Customs bloke out.

It was then that Don got down to the real business of the meeting - to get Bill into a rehab. facility in Sydney. Don talked with Bill for about an hour, pleading with him to take the opportunity he was offering him. Bill finally agreed, and Don asked me to arrange to get him up to Sydney. I said I would. He said he'd ring me as soon as he was able to arrange his admission to the facility. I heard nothing further about this for about three weeks, and was beginning to despair.

Then, early one Sunday morning, I received a phone call from Don, saying he'd managed to get Bill into the rehab. joint. This Sunday morning happened to be the day after Don lost his job as Minister for Customs. It was the day after Whitlam's ascension to the prime ministership. Chipp had just lost his job. His party had been turfed out of office, after twenty-three years. He must have been knackered after weeks of campaigning. The first thing I said was that I was sorry for him about the election result. He said, "It was not unexpected. Now, I'm depending on you to get Bill up to Sydney". Quite possibly, this was his last act as a minister in that government.

Despite Don's best efforts, Bill never made it to the rehab facility. He committed a series of armed robberies on chemist shops and eventually shot through to the UK. Throughout this whole process, I got the feeling Bill didn't really want to go into rehab, but was rather just grandstanding about his relationship with Chipp. Don had given him work delivering talks to high school students about the dangers of drugs, which is how they met.

I will never hear a word against him. One of the very best people I've met.
