Hi all.

I was thinking the other day about how great it is being a hawk this year - with all the kids coming on, winning a final last year & anticipating another good season.

started thinking about the darker days from when we were about to merge & all that happend after that & was remined of Don Scott's famous "Velcro Hawk" speech -still sends shivers down my spine today - what an inspirational moment.

As a passionate hawks man i find it a little sad that don scott & hawthorn do not get on -

Don Scott's seems like a grumpy, eccentric pain in the butt to me ,but by god i respect the man -

he is a real "cometh the hour, cometh the man" type character.

he didn't save this club all on his own,but he was a vital contributor & was able to inspire enough people like myself drunk on success to get off thier arse & help save our beloved football club by giving them what they needed..money.

Anyway with the future looking brighter now than it has for many seasons - i hope the club & supporters will always appreciate what don scott & others like Ian dicker have done for this club.

Sometimes in life the people who where there in the bad times & did good things get forgotten once success comes along. I only say this as i believe this type of secnario can effect a clubs culture & image.

I would not like to see any news stories about how a don scott or ian dicker for example were snubbed by the club in some way - bad press & effects the club - so i hope we continue open up our arms to any true hawk who wants to share in our future successes.

Well anyway this post really has nothing to do with the season ahead - Just don't want us to lose our way as the family club again if we start having real substained success & the don scott thing is just one angle to it - be it a small one.

Oh & by the way if by some miracle you get onto big footy Mr Scott -please don't do a KB & be a stubon old fart - get down to the club if they want you to. be great to see yer there.

cheers.

Great post, mate.

Thanks. Always think the best story that best describes don scott's character was at 3 quarter time in the "71 grand final - with the saints up by about 21 points - kennedy had the guys in the huddle & was basically saying lets just get out there & try to win the quater & scott stood up in front of the entire group & said stuff that we'll win the bloody thing.

From what i've read it was apparently was a huge inspriational moment & just typical of don scotts never say die attitude.

I agree with The Boundary Rider's thoughts. I think Scotty was a great leader, an inspiration in "the dark days" and a total pain in the arse at most other times.

When he was a player and the captain he was a loner and had few friends in the club. Later a a committee man he was also mostly the odd man out and not particularly well liked.

But for all that and a difficult personality, Don Scott is Hawthorn. The record is on the board to prove it.

I dont think hes any good and I remember that he was the one that tried to get rid of Ian Dickers that saved us from Melbourne merging us. I recon he was a good player for us and captain back in the 1970s but hes no good for us hes to old and we need younger like Jeff running us. If he wants to help us he should give us money for us to buy things for the players so they dont want to leave us. I think he still thinks were at the Glenferie dump he needs to get modern like waverly is.

I think your a little misguided on Don Scott RB. There is nothing wrong with Don Scott forming a rival ticket against Ian Dicker. I don't think he ever realistically would have thought he would win, so why would he do it?

Don Scott is a grumpy old man who has got some serious issues that need to be straightened out before he makes another bid to try and topple the board.
I respected him when he played but off the field he is one guy who cracks the shits over nearly every decision that hawthorn have made.

Well said TBR.:thumbsu:

Dear RB.

If we left it to Jeff back in '96 we'd have a blue jumper with "a velcro hawk" on it.

Jeff as premier could have kept quiet but he was quite pro merger and as people like you illustrate, he had/has influence.

Mind you the libs were merger/privatisation fans at the time

There are 2 stories about what happened at 3/4 time regarding what happened in the 71 GF - the one which appeared in "We are Hawthorn" regarding scott sounds to me a bit like an "urban myth" - if anybody knew kennedy you would know he would never ever ever say in a GF at 3/4 time, lets just try to win the quarter - especially if we were only 20 pts down.

Though of course scott could of been calling out "come-on we can win this" - but kennedy would have never rolled over which the previous story suggests.

The story according to the "The Hard Way" (written 11 years earlier by Harry Gordon) is quite different & seems more believable.

For the last quarter Kennedy pushed Hudson, also having a quiet time against Barry Lawrence, out to centre half forward, and moved Keddie into the goalsquare. "You have got to win it for us, Bob" Kennedy told him at the break "and you can". He did. For 16 electrifying minutes, Keddie seemed to go crazy, out-jostling Colling, spining out of trouble, pouncing on the ball, winning 7 kicks and kicking 4 goals.

This move by Kennedy was the match winning move - one of the greatest ever to turn a grand final.

I agree with you there. Also if you have a listen to Kennedy's 3qr time speech you will find that it is also really legendary and very inspiring.

Don Scott was a champion Hawk and almost saved our club off his own back, he will always be a legend but as a bloke, well..... I just can't have him.

Anyone see Scott at Sydneys gay and lesbian Mardigras?? I do believe our Legend is quite friendly with a few of those lads :thumbsu:. Good luck to the man, I will always love him for the work he did for the club.

He's gay, thus a pain in the butt.

Why does no one ever mention David Parkin in regards to the merger and the guidance he gave Don? Big behind the scenes player
