Neese is living in the hottest city on the planet (Adelaide is so hot right now) and still manages to squeeze out a post. The rest of you lamos need a good hard look.

Bring back kick to kick.
No pre-game warm ups!
Old style training. Kick to kick while you're waiting for the stragglers with a number of attempts at taking a hanger by using one of your mates as a step ladder.
Circle work for an hour with the coach turning red faced and yelling "Twenty push ups now. This is pathetic". Before yelling "Put the balls down, form an Indian file and don't stop running until I tell you".

Those were the days ;)

Highlights of the 1972 grand final below in colour between the blues and tigers. Includes post match celebrations and lap of honour.
Also included in colour are highlights of the '72 second semi final replay between the blues and tigers and the first semi final between the saints and pies in the same year.
Footage of Carlton players in dark shorts is the grand final and white shorts is the second semi replay.
Good to see this in colour despite several editing and commentary bloopers; ie blues and tigers run out to the ground before the start of the grand final, blues wearing dark shorts, tigers white shorts- then when the commentator mentions '..and here come the umpires' you can see a couple of Richmond players wearing dark shorts (footage of umpires walking on the ground was from second semi final replay).

Thanks Blues 177!! I jumped the fence in 72 as an 11 year old and other than an old photo from the Sun which shows me, have never seen that footage of the lap of honour. As a 52 yo, it made my day to be able to see myself in the lap of honour as an 11 yo. Great work!

Fantastic stuff Blues177.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Used to be beaut pre-game when the opposing teams would kick those coloured footies into the crowd. All the drunks up the city end standing room were falling over each other trying to snaffle one.

Never seen 1972 gf in colour, '73 was televised in colour, but not in Australia, first one I reckon was 1975, when those hideous (Essendon - Red, Richmond - yellow) colour shorts came in, and Hawthorn started wearing pixie boots.

Thought 77 was first, obviously not. Maybe first live televised?

'77 was the first televised live, was in the middle of a 3 week power strike as I recall.

Previously you'd get the teams coming out, toss of the coin, National Anthem.........then Ice Station Zebra for 3 hours.

I remember watching the GF with a couple of friends. At 3/4 time we were crying because Collingwood looked the winners. We didn't think the wobbles could get them.

The great tradition of the GF footy marathon was well established by 1977 and you'd watch and listen to Mike Williamson, Butch Gale, Ted Whitten, Bob Skilton who could be more entertaining than the football.

Ted Whitten's "Hit the boundary line, son". Butch Gale's "I'm having a heart attack". Both comments from the 1966 GF.

Mike came up with a number of memorable comments like his famous "Jesaulenko! You beauty" from the 1970 GF. The less obscure when the ball disappeared up the city end of the MCG when it was kicked into the standing room, "Some gay in the crowd took it". I think this was 1972. And his perennials. When talking about the police "they do a marvellous job" and his "I tipped this" when the game was close and a draw was a possibility.

The irony of 1977 was Mike wasn't calling the game. It was the first GF I could remember where he hadn't called the game because he'd been replaced by Lou Richards. His perennial "I tipped this" would have been spot on.

Woo hoo! 1000 posts. Three cheers for the Mighty Aphrodite and all contributors to this thread. Thank you for letting an old man wax lyrical about happy memories. :thumbsu:

Without doubt my favourite thread on Big Footy.

I struggle to get on much during the week but this is always my first port of call. Love the memories, the insights and most of all the passion from the people that have bled navy blue for their entire lives. Massive thanks to all those that contribute, as Thy said it proves that this club and the memories it has provided people runs so much deeper than just kicking the leather around. Many of us remember moments in time by what the Blues were up to and all of us can remember precisely where we were on the days of the significant moments.

Keep it up guys, may this thread always linger and never end! :thumbsu: :thumbsu: :thumbsu:
