Does anyone remember when Dennis Banks king hit David Rhys Jones and knocked him out?
I cant remember what year it was but i know it was at the MCG in front of the members stand.
Got three weeks for this , i'd guess 85-86??

Only a 3 week suspension?
Imagine what they would get these days.
He sure got him good.
Nearly 30 years on and I would guess might be looking 6-8 weeks. What did Barry Hall get for whacking Staker??

Discovered this Gem when looking at the training footage last night.
Shows just how universally loved the great man was/is...

I have been reliably informed that when the Blues went overseas in 1972 the only conversation between Doully and John O'Connell was "your shout".

J'OC and Doully were Broady Boys. The former Glenroy, the latter Jacana.

Stories of Doully's shyness are not exaggerated. A mate of mine had an older brother who was good mates with Bruce. He lobbed up to his house and was told his brother was not home. He was invited in and said he preferred to wait on the front porch. Of course, he had his legendary white fur hat on! At this time Bruce was an established player and a premiership player.

I remember the good old days when recruiting was fun and less unpredictable. Take 1986 for example. In the off season, we recruited Stephen Kernahan, Craig Bradley, Peter Mötley and John Dorotich. Why? Because we could! Before that, the country zone of Bendigo provided us with a few decent footballers like Ken Sheldon, Trevor Keogh, Rod Ashman, Jim Buckley,Geoff Southby, Des English and Peter McConville. I sure miss exclusive access to the Bendigo recruiting area. Now it's all about a level playing field. It didn't exist then and it doesn't exist now

Magro cleaned up Jezza only about 20 metres from where i was sitting.

To this day it is the ugliest reaction from a crowd I have ever witnessed. Closest thing to seeing someone kill Bambi ever!!

God... I had completely blocked that out... the only other hit that I have seen like that was Garry 'Flea' Wilson taking out Jim Jesse. It's strange when it happens to hated opposition, regardless of who makes the hit, it's seen as fair and legal... but when it happens to one of our own, we are baying for blood

The crowd reaction to Milburn knocking our SOS was pretty bad.

I think that was the last straw on the day... Carlton came to play, the pussies came to be the hard men and rough us up... I remember that they also clobbered Ratts and Braddles that day as well.

One of my fave games was out at Waverley. last home and away of 87, against North. Sticks kicked the winning goal after the siren. I was watching through my fingers and on the edge of the old wooden bench seat. Remember Kenny Hunters dash down the wing in front of us. Felt like an eternity for us to get out of the car park. But i didnt care, was smiling from ear to ear and looking forward to the finals the following week.

Trying to leave Waverly was shite at the best of times... If the, then, state government had lived up to the promise about putting in a spur on the Dandy line it would have been possibly a lot better... but as it was, the only way to get there was by bus or by car. I went there on a school expedition in the early 70's to see the pope... now that was a fun day... top tier and all I could see was this little white dot down in the middle of the ground...

IIRC, they were either going to spur the line at Huntingdale and run the line parallel to North Rd/Wellington Rd and then along the Monash Freeway with a stop for the footy ground just near the old back carpark area and continue on to Waverly Gardens.

But the government of the time backed out of it and the football ground had to make do with the buses as the only form of public transport out there.

Safe to say no one wanted Waverley....not even the State government!

Ah yes, the Ventura buses!!!!

I am certain Ratten dislocated his elbow that day...pretty much ruined our finals campaign. it was a wet, horrible day that one!

I keep saying it but I have never in all my time of watching footy seen a crowd reaction like that day. The Carlton favourite son was lined up and taken out by a guy with a solid reputation for thuggery right on our own dung heap!!! Not cool!

Loved Waverley (must have been one of the few)
Growing up in The Dandenongs, we were only about 20 minutes away from the ground.
My brother and I would often get mum to drive us there and watch a game - never mattered who was playing.
My auntie and uncle used to live about a 15 minute walk from the ground, so my mum would go there for the afternoon and we'd walk over there after the game had finished, and kicked the footy on the ground until it was near dark.

Some very fond (and funny) memories from the many games I went to at Waverley.

Nice story HBF. I have to say it is weird driving along the Monash now and where the carpark used to be is now houses. All that is left is the Sir Kenneth Luke Stand. Saw some huge Carlton games there. Will never forget the match against Essendon where we lost by a point (I think) and we kicked something like 7 goals 22....it was horrible to watch!!

Waverley was a good ground to watch from. I lived in the north/east suburbs so it was a nightmare to get there. In the early day it was 2 trains and a bus, took hours.
Later when going by car the worst thing was getting out of the car park. On days when a big crowd was expected we would take tea and cakes and sit in the car park after the game and have something to eat and drink and wait for the cars to leave.
It always rained there and was always cold.

Car Park at Waverley was always a nightmare.
Thankfully my auntie and uncle lived very close to the ground right up until the last game, so when I finally turned 18 & didn't have to ask mum to drive me and my brother, I would leave my car at my auntie and uncles and walk accross to the ground.

The only thing we had to battle was running through the traffic trying to get to Jacksons Rd.

I loved travelling to Waverley Park. Didn't matter where you sat, you could always see. Experienced many four seasons in the one day there too! And nearly ALWAYS lost the car in the car park or got bogged or waited ages to get out of there :o

Problem with Waverley was that if you sat behind the goals at either end, it was bloody hard to see down the other end of the ground. Still loved going to that ground - was even better having a Waverley Park membership for a few years in the mid '80's and being able to sit in the members.
