trying to download a torrent but download speed is under 2 k/s

any help speeding this is appreciated

First of, PortForward. Portfowarding is basically allowing a port to open to let all the information to travel through. In a simple analogy, it's like opening a pub [port] to let all the patrons [information] come through.

Port forwarding isn't all too difficult. There is a site dedicated to port forwarding help here.

Once that is done. You'll need to open up the port from the Vista firewall if you have Vista.

Another thing that you'll have to find out is determining the seed to leechers ratio.

Ask yourself, are there a lot of seeders that you're downloading from? Are there a lot of leechers as well?
Generally if there are a lot of seeds and 1 leecher, then it should be going exceptionally fast. If there are no seeders, then it'll go very very slow. So you may have hopped onto a bad torrent with a low amount of seeders.

Another issue is your internet connection. Downloading is not ideal if you're on dial up because it'll just be way too slow.

Another thing, are YOU uploading any data back? It' good that you upload back because the data received and sent reciprocate because torrents tend to prefer the heavy uploaders. A good rule of thumb is to set your upload limit at 80% of your upload speed. You can check out yours if you just type in Google "Internet speed test"

Anyway, I hope what I've typed up helps everyone who reads this and sometime it always help just to have patience and limit on your internet usage if you're downloading. I tend to leave it over night.

What program are you using? This happened to me when I used to use Azureus. Absolute bastard of a program.

If you've not already, get uTorrent. So easy to use. Azureus should never be recommended to anyone.

Azureus is a monster of a program. Very big memory hog. Go for utorrent, it is by far one of the most simplest to use for a n00b like me.
