The Sydney Swans have announced final list changes, with three rookies elevated to the senior list, and ruckman Stephen Doyle announcing his retirement.

2007 rookies Ed Barlow, Luke Brennan and Kieren Jack have all been elevated to the 2008 senior list after playing senior games during 2007.

Doyle has announced his retirement from AFL football, after playing 47 matches for the club since his debut in 2000.

Craig Bird has been promoted from the scholarship list to the Club’s senior list and will be selected with the Swans last selection in the National Draft.

Rookie Nick Smith has been retained for a second year on the list, and will be joined by Jake Orreal and Brendan Murphy, who will be pre-selected in the December rookie draft.

Sam Rowe and Matthew O'Dwyer have been delisted by the club, but have been offered the opportunity to resume pre-season training with the Club in a bid to be re-drafted in the Rookie Draft.

Changes to the Swans list will leave the club with two selections in the AFL National Draft, picks 11 and 26.

The Sydney Swans will not participate in the pre-season draft, as the club will already have the maximum number of players on its list after its selections at the national draft.

Gotta feel sorry for Doyle, it's not his fault he's injury prone and he obviously knows that he'll never be able to string together games

SYDNEY SWANS

Simon Phillips
Luke Vogels
Jonathan Simpkin
Matthew O’Dwyer (rookie)
Sam Rowe (rookie)
Matthew Davis (rookie)
Earl Shaw (rookie)

With Doyle 'retiring' it gives us very little ruck back up.
Jolly & Everitt (who is 33) are our only frontline ruckmen
Currie is coming out of school football and players like Playfair, LRT, Richards & White are emergency only fill ins/ back ups. I don't think Goodes will ever be used again as a centre bounce ruckman.

I assume Rowe will be redrafted and that his delisting was a 'technical' requirement.

Similarly we would surely have to draft a ruckman with our first or second rounder in the upcoming draft.

You're right. Goodes will never be used as a centre bounce ruckman again. But I hope he's used as an around the ground ruckman. There's no one in the league that can go with him when he's in the ruck.

I am very suprised that we elevated three players onto the list. We only have two picks in the national draft 11 and 26 (not including Bird). Barlow was always going to come up.

It's to big a risk to use either of these two picks on a ruckman. We have to pick the best available KP players with both these picks in my mind. They are two very high picks, we cannot afford to stuff them up. If we had a pick in the 40's or 50's, perhaps then you could take a punt and take a ruckman.

Smokey for the backup ruckman - Mocca White. Often in the reserves this year he was called to pinch hit in the ruck, and got better each time he was tried. More your bash and crash Dr. Jolly type, but he is big enough and angry enough. Terrific pace for a bloke his size too.

Any ruckman drafted will be very unlikely to play seniors in his first year.

But with Everitt in the last year of his contract and already 33, we need to plan for the future.

Assuming Currie develops and Everitt leaves (prior to 2009 season), that would still leave us light on for ruckmen.

At least if we draft a ruckman this year he will have been in the system for a year (prior to the 2009 season) and if Everitt leaves we can make a more informed decision if we need to trade in a ruckman, this time next year.

do you mean jesse white? i'd hoped he would be allowed to develop as a key forward, but in that bash-and-crash style you speak of
i also feel very sorry for doyle, a talented footballer with a fragile body

I can't say I'm surprised about the elevations. I always thought Barlow and Jack are no brainers, and to keep Brennan, we'd have to promote him and the coaching staff seems to like his attributes.

Feel a bit sorry for Doyle. He looked quite good early on. Got good hands in taking marks, decent kick and decent below his knees. But injuries had really destroyed his game. Basically this means that all of our F/S picks have failed - well, unless Dempster comes back one day.

Does this mean Doyle's final year on contract remains with the Club salary cap?

If it does, then his retirement was de t inury rather than the Club pushing him out.

I'm very surprised because it does leave the Club short on ruck options. Perhaps White might be used in the ruck then. With his height and weight, he may just go well there.

I'm sure they will draft a ruckman now. However which round?

Unfortunately Doyle needed to go, even though he had talent. In the cut-throat business of modern football, any player that can't get on the park has to make way for someone who can!

Interesting may have been pushed in to it one may think because he was never going to play at the Swans one way or another I said the four before they were named and with more to come before or on the deadline .

I keep you informed preseason and leading into the 08 season Once I here somethink from with in

The club would have paid a portion of that contract I would think.

It is sad to see a player retire not achieving his potential as Doylie didn't. His body was just too brittle, particularly his knees and ankles.

Scholarship List

Don't forget that 15 years olds Ryan Bottin-Noonan and Jay Lewis are currently aligned to Sydney via the AFL’s scholarship program (come on 2010!)

It will be interesting to see if Sydney picks up any other club's scholarship players as priority 'NSW rookies' if they are not drafted/rookie listed to their aligned clubs.

Cheers

Congratulations and all the best for your future in 'the Red and the White' goes to Luke Brennan. Well done Bloods, from a guy who used to spend half his life down at the Lake Oval. Favourite player No. 26 I think, ex-Army lad named Stevie Hoffman, who I think was the shortest guy in footy. Cheers to the club and Luke for '08.:thumbsu:

So we've just got the 2 picks in the National Draft, and won't participate in the Pre-Season Draft. Does anyone know how many Rookie spots are available?

everitt will be playing next year for sure especially with the year he had this year (not great but good for first year at the club) and that will give us 12 months on working on another ruckmen
