Draft aim?

Quiet season has started, ey? Just as exams are here and I need a distraction to keep me away from studies


Anyway, what will the eagles be looking to draft? Talls or smalls? In and unders or seagulls? Forwards or defenders?

Personally, I'd like to see us go after an in and under midfielder, someone in the Kerr mould who could make in immediate impact next year. Easier said than done, but there's been a few names thrown up around our pick who could fit that mould.

well i think we definitely need a key defender. and i think that gayfer may have to be the go IMO. im not sure what pick but from what ive gathered he wont be around at 20..so a possibility at 11. However, each year theere seems to be a player that unexpectedly goes in the top 10 which may push the order back one and allow us to get a Vic midfielder -- Dunn, McLean etc.

i dont think burges is the go at 11.

We will take 2 smalls and 2 talls... On what I've seen and read, I hope it goes something like this...

11 - Ryley Dunn
20 - Chris Stewart
26 - Beau Waters
58 - Who knows... Brett Jones?

All interstaters though (cept Jones) but that doesnt worry us. I would be wrapt if we ended up with Dunn and Waters, probably the 2 hardest players in the draft. Chris Stewart is a promising tall. We will probably take Embley at 58. I really don't think we will take Gayfer, we tend to go for Athletic talls. If you are looking for an inside midfielder then Brock McLean is probably the go at #11.

I find it a common ascertion that the TAC Cup players must be better than the other states player because they play football in Victoria. I simply don't share this notion and believe home grown talent this year is great, have a dig at them.

All sounds good in theory but with Fremantle ahead of us in a few positions and likely to take local players, I suspect we will end up taking interstate players - if we are true to our theory of taking the best available. Its that line of thinking which would have seen us take Polak before Judd, and that would have been a mistake. I hope we take the best available and i'm sure we will.

IMO opinion by the end of their careers both Judd and Polak will be acknowledged as premium players within their generation and both would have been worthy picks at no.3. I am glad that we have Judd but I would not have objected too looudly if we had Polak instead.

No doubt. I can see in 10 years time there will be Judd vs Polak debates like there are Buckley vs Hird debates now. Having said that, Judd is a game breaker, he is capable of doing something special. He can leave you thinking "my god, did you just see that?!" Polak is probably just as talented but less entertaining. We made the right choice.

Burges is an athletic utility, who has been hidden by the eagles, but was impressive at draft camp. Apparently highly skilled as well as athletic. Eagles are unlikely to wait until pick 20, due to reported interest from Melbourne, Fremantle and Collingwood.

20. Michael Johnson
Perth Oct 20, 84 194 cm 92 kg
Tall key defender who was overlooked in last years draft. Played the season in the WAFL, where he impressed.

26. Ben Cosgriff
Murray Bushrangers Aug 19, 85 186 cm 90 kg
Cosgriff is a tough utility who is a great mark, and a natural leader. Most likely too small for KP in the AFL, I see him developing into an Aaron Hamill type. Very good pickup.

58. Michael Pettigrew
West Perth Mar 16, 85 192 cm 80 kg
Tall, outside defender or forward who has good agility and speed for his size. Has excellent recovery and great below the knees. AIS-AFL Academy member in 2002. From Whitford FC.

Chad Jones
Claremont Jun 15, 84 194 cm 79 kg
Athletic big man who has played the year in the WAFL. Good draft camp results, could be a worth a look with a late pick.

What I find interesting is how badly St Kilda screwed up by taking Ball at #2. Ball said he wanted to finish studying at his High School in 2002, so if he was drafted by a non-vic club he wouldn't be able to move till 2003. His parents also made it publicly known they wouldn't be too happy if he was to move interstate.

Now, IMO, if Saints had taken Judd at #2, the eagles would have passed on Ball at #3 and taken Polak, Freo would have taken Sampi at #4 (due to above stated reasons, and Freo's preference of WA kids), and the Saints would have picked up Ball at #5. Its all speculative, but IMO a very probable scenario.

With the picks we have access to, we probably have the choice of either an AFL ready midfielder or a kpp with a season or two of development ahead of him.

Personally, I'd go for a key defender development prospect, just in case Gaspar, Glass, Lynch and co. fail to come up, and a beefy, good sized midfielder/flanker who can slot into the team immediately. We lack a tagger who is both quick and strong, and that would be a decent acquisition

Actually that's very good reasoning that, but the top 6 was almost a garunateed from the 2001 draft, it was just the order that was very interesting.

I also think we may have ended up with Judd at 6 quite easily.

Say we took Polak at 3, Freo would've gone Sampi for sure at 4, and St Kilda did seem very keen on Clarke at the time, but if they had the option between him and Judd, I think they may have gone Judd. But they may not have, and we coulda snared Juddy at 6 anyway.

Sampi is a great footballer, but as a club we probably would've been more looking for Polak...........but than we may be better served by Sampi. who knows!



On this years draft. Fremantle traded very smartly, because there are a lot of WA players around the top 30 this year - Kep Bradley, Matt Moody, Farren Ray, Jacob Surjan, Callum Burges, Brent Hall, Michael Johnson, Matt Spencer and possibly Kyle Archibald, Llane Spanderman and Micahael Pettigrew. And with both clubs probably more keen on the homegrown talent, them going from 1 spot behind us, to 1 spot in front of us with their trading was very smart indeed.

Pick 11 - Let Burges go. Not worth number 11 I don't reckon. But I think we will take him. Dunn would be my ultimate option, but I think he'll be gone. Hopefully the Dockers won't pick Surjan up, otherwise I'd want him.

In order I'd like to see us get:
1. Ryley Dunn
2. Jacob Surjan
3. Brock McLean
4. Fergus Watts
5. William Gayfer
6. Farren Ray
7. Matt Moody
8. Callum Burges

Pick 20 - With a lot of luck some of the above - in particular Surjan may still be around with this pick. But I could live with picking up Johnson or Burges with this pick. I'd think McLean, Watts, Gayfer and Ray are gone by this pick. I'd be shocked if they weren't. But aside from the order of the above list, this would be my preference for pick 20.

10. Ricky Dyson
11. Michael Johnson
12. Beau Waters
13. Luke Peel

Pick 26 - I reckon this is the one we get Beau Waters with. I've big raps for him as every one knows, apparentally is keen to move interstate, so would be fantastic. At 26, I'd take him over everyone on the above lists except for the top 5, if one of them somehow managed to slip through to number 26. If Waters is gone, than one of the following:
14. Brad Symes
15. Josh Willoughby
16. Llane Spanderman
17. David Trotter
18. Ben Cosgriff
19. Jay Nash
20. Michael Pettigrew

Pick 58 - Now this could be anyone. Pettigrew is a big chance to slip through to 58 and if he's there, gotta take him with this pick. Mail is we're also keen on Embley's younger brother. I also think we may not make a pick unless one of the following are around:
1. Michael Pettigrew
2. Embley (dunno first name)
3. Nick Potter
4. Jacob Farfuro
5. Rowan Bonson (very unlikely to go into the draft)

and is there any chance of us redrafting Phil Read......??

I still hope we get Callum Burgess...for no other reason then he seems to have the size and athleticism to become our tall midfielder, that aside from Embley and maybe Selwood, we do not have.

Burges is probably more a utility than a true midfielder. 185cm really isn't that tall. Taller midfield/utility types on our list include Nicoski at 186, Jones at 187, Selwood is 188 as is Judd and Embley is 190cm.

If I remember correctly Freo said they would have chosen Judd as their first pick if available, so if we'd gone for Polak then Freo would have Judd and we'd procbably have Sampi at 6.

But what if Freo had not traded it's first pick. They would probably now have Judd and Sampi.

You may be right but why then did we delist Read?
