Does anyone have an idea of the percentage of players that attend draft camp and then get drafted?

Interested to know.

Cheers

I will stand corrected but i think last year 47 kids got drafted who went to draft camp and a total of about 70 who went to camp. So that would be about 67%.

Yazuka might be able to give an accurate figure

does that include screening camp? What would the breakdown percentage be for both?

No that doesn't include screening camp. Not many get picked from screening camp and I would be surprised if it was as high as 10%. These figures are only for drafted not rookie listed.

Thanks. That's a shame because there's some good names going to screening, hope that they still get looked at

In last 3 years 44, 40 and 46 players taken in the National Draft have been to Draft Camp. This would be out of around 70 each year.

Screening Camp was 9, 8 and 4.

In the last 3 years only 57, 50 and 58 underage picks have been used in the National Draft (the rest are either overage players, ex-AFL or passes). Gives you some idea of how tough it is to get on a primary AFL list.

On average 96% of underage players drafted have attended Draft or Screening Camp.

If you include the rookie draft, the figures are incraesed to 56, 52 and 59 for players attending Draft Camp getting picked up. So the chances are pretty good you will get onto a list.

Even if you include the rookie list, on average over 85% of underage players have attended a Draft or Screening Camp.

with the low numbers for screening camps, could anyone have a stab of anyone attending this years screening who might get picked?

thanks golden hawk, useful data based information that will make those not going to canberra, and their mates, understanding of their chances. the number of WA and Qld players going to draft camp appear higher than previous years, is this the case? looks as if brisbane, dockers and eagles are very keen on locals this year.

Percentage of AIS/AFL Academy players drafted would be reasonablty high as would U18 AA.

From a Qld perspective, KANNIS, ARMITAGE and SPURR have the best chances of being drafted from screening camp. If not, all 3 have a BIG chance of being rookied by Brisbane.

anyone in the know could you tell me wether the lads asked to miss the draft camp and play grandfinal in sanfl would affect their chances of being picked up come draft time or not? I know they still attend the screening camp in their state (reading the stats above is this taken into account)

The stats above assume if you were invited to Draft Camp you attended, even if you couldn't due to SANFL commitments. I doubt Hurn's chances will be affected providing he goes to Screening Camp.

AIS/AFL Academy is very high - around 80-85% make it on to a list or rookie list eventually.

All-Australian is even higher in recent years, usually only 1-2 players miss out.

Haven't checked the state by state breakdowns for the invites, but it wouldn't surprise me if it is higher for WA and Qld, simply because they had better prospects than in previous years.

Queensland had an outstanding side in terms of potential AFL players, plus several more who didn't play in the carnival due to injury or being too old. The standard of footy has improved dramatically up there, and the impact of the Lions 3 flags will be felt at this draft and over the next 3-5 years.

thanks for that GH. would this also be the case for those who could be lower draft picks? Some of the boys will probably fall into this catagory the way the sanfl ladder is looking (not just league, but reserves). Obvious top 10 picks will be pretty right anyway ;)

In a way it can be an advantage for them to play in the SANFL as this is the last game recruiters will see live so the boys have a chance to make an impression. Mind you a good game can see them jump places, whilst a bad game could have them wishing they went to camp.
As a recruiter you would be dissapointed if a kid passed up the oppurtunity to play in a premiership just to go to draft camp.
