We'll learn things that will occur over the next half a month that we wouldn't otherwise know.

Maybe De Boer is better at playing than training or vice versa.

Maybe one of the players we're thinking about wasn't able to go to draft camp or SS, and we can check them out otherwise.

Maybe we're giving the players we have training with us an ultimatum; be the best trainer or we won't pick you up.

Etc etc etc...

What are we going to learn in a month that we don't already know?
I don't think we're going to learn anything new, what I believe is we want to make sure that the player we get is the right player. There were probably 4-6 players we had in mind and instead of trying to decide in 4 minutes we passed and can now go away and reassess and pick the right player in the PSD.

BTW, it might be nothing, but I heard that McCulloch, the ruckman who the Lions took at 69, was in the gun for us with 70 but they overheard Cameron, Jackson and co talking about him still being available and decided to take him instead of waiting for their next pick when they had planned to take him.

Would be disappointed if this is true. However, it seemed like it was a bit of a joke when they mentioned it on the Draft show on Fox.

Well seeing as picks from 30 onwards have statisticalyl as much chance of making it as each other, I don't really mind we might miss out on the one we were hoping for. Chances are the one we get will be every bit as good as the one we don't.

Re: We drafted perfectly

I demand the draft day discussion thread be locked at midnight so no discussion takes place in it after draft day.
Well, technically, midnight would be tomorrow...
11.59.59 would be more suitable...

just out of cureority who is training with us?

Burgan and quite a few other sites talking about sibosado list him as a defender, other sources call him a KP prospect without mentioning whether that is up forward or down back, but I have rarely seen anything that says he is, at this stage, a forward.
Watch the vid of him in the thread on the draft board. He gets the ball all over the ground but it is the marks he takes and goals he kicks that tell me he is a forward. Came to prominence with 5 goals for Oakleigh.

just my opinion...

happy with the first selection of Vickery. Addressed our number 1 & 2 need with one selection - a potentail number 1 ruckman or centre half forward. I like the fact his father works at the club, Ty wanted to come to our club - and cos his dad is a conditioning & boxing guru - we know he will have every chance to develop his body into the physical presence you need to be dominant in that position - along with the aggression needed to be a success. I think we got the player who most suited our needs, and also the "best available".

The 2nd selection will be the one which makes or breaks if our 2008 draft was any good. Post seems to have ticked all the boxes of a marking, key position, player - but, i would have been much more comfortable with either Roughead or McKernan - as both were capable of being rucking, key forwards. Our ruck (especially "tap rucks" )stocks are probably in the bottom 20% in the league at the moment. Simmonds is elite, but no one else comes close. Pattison is a great around the ground ruck - but never will be a great tap. Putt could develop into a handy "forward ruckman" , but from all reports - he will be better focusing his energy on working on coming a full forward. Graham is meant to be "specialist tap ruckman" (meaning he is incapable of playing any other position) - but really has not shown any sign of ever suggesting he will make it as that. Vickery will definitely put the pressure on those other blokes - but i would have liked another player to be breathing down there back also. I think Roughhead would have been a great addition - as from all reports his tap work was in the the top 3-4 in the draft.

Can anyone else in the know report Is Post a one on one contested mark guru? It is reported he had 50 more maks than anyone else - but was that because he played a "3rd man in" role, similar to what Polak and Bowden have played for us in the past? Is he a "lead and mark" type? I think we needed a 1 on 1 contested guru - and i think McKernan would have fitted that bill well - as well as been a very useful rucking prospect. I'm not real confident of this bloke being a pivitol part in our rebuilding the forward line once richo goes - only averaged a goal every 2nd game, and spent a large part of the season in the backline.

Hislop at 58 was definitely a gamble - and hopefully he realizes it. Out of all the recycled players we could have gotten - i'm glad we decided on him, but pick 58 was a bit early for my liking. The club has really attempted to correct the tough, insider midfield position with 2 slightly mature age recruits in Tom and Thomson - so we can know one thing for sure - either 3 or 4 of King, connors, jackson, polo, hislop, thomson or Cogs will NOT be at the club next year, and will be at the Gold Coast. I like the fact that we have put immediate pressure on Cog's to get it right next year. We all feel sorry for him, but he has had his 12 months to recover - now he has to prove he has still got it - and if Hislop and / or thomson are getting a game before him next year - then he will have to go.

Lets hope Tom can get his head right, as the talent is not the issue - but we all said that with Collard, but ultimately he was an unprofessional, lazy footballer and person - and hence finds himself as another could-been. Some clubs learn their lesson with risking with these types after they get burned like we just did with Collard - but for some reason, we have instead taken 2 new players this season who come with the same history, in Thomson and Hislop. Lets hope they get it right, as it will be extremely embarrassing if it turns out the same.

Passing on pick 70 is a bit baffling for me - we really needed to do something with this pick. I'm not happy that we didn't get another well balanced, good skilled midfielder - or another good running, well skilled flanker. WE may have a plethora of these already, but it is important to keep the pressure up on these blokes. We have lost Cass, Meyer, Hyde, Tivendale, Collard, Howat, - and really no one we recruited covers the same positions. We really will be depending on Collins, Cogs, Hislop, thomson, Connors, Thomson, polo, edwards, We still need a small and fast, pressure exciting forward - and hopefully we can pull a "davey" or "betts" from the PSD or rookie draft.

i probably rate our draft a 6.5 / 10 on first impressions - ultimately we should have used more picks - at least 1 (but probably 2 ) of Graham, Pettifer, Collins & Jackson should have been moved on now - cos as it stands - i think next year with the possible retirement of at least 2 of bowden, richo, johnson, simmonds, Brown ( all are one bad injury from their careers over) - along with over 14 players on their "last leg" - we will most likely take up to 8 selections next year - in a draft which is compromised by the Gold Coast .

Players who need a massive 2009 to stay on the List

Oakley Nicholls
Jackson
Schulz
Collins
Polo
Hislop
Thomson
Graham
Pettifer (how he will do this with one leg is beyond me )
Connors
Cogs
Polak
Hughes
King
Raines

we will look mighty stupid taking only 3 selections this year, then 8 next year in a draft which is looking weaker - and compromised.
