Re: Draft Discussion

Taking all that on board, looking into the future.
The key area's to address, are our ruck stocks and key position forwards .

In saying that, take the best available at Pick 8 (if it's Hartlett great), then focuss on the KP forward and ruck with our other picks.

Re: Draft Discussion

^ you realize this has all been done to death at seasons end. So you'll have to forgive us if we don't jump on to this topic your pushing for. we all discussed what our list needs are, who we should target and whether it's ideal to draft the best available.

Sadly mate you just arrived a few months too late. :)

Apologies, boredom got the better of me.

Re: Draft Discussion

No need to be sorry mate, just search back a couple of pages and you might find what you're looking for.

And I agree with you on your terms with our picks, best available first needs second

Re: Draft Discussion

I believe she gave an updated top 10 on SEN yesterday. The rest of that list was done by another poster trying to see how the rest of the first round would pan out. They believe that Vickery would slide to 17 as the rest of the sides aren't in desperate need for a ruckman.
If Vickery is there at 8 and we don't take him I'll be verrrrrrrrry disappointed. 17 would be a **** of a steal.

spot on choice is simple hartlett if gone big mac pick 26 hope roughead is still there

Re: Draft Discussion

Vickery on paper looks like a good pick for us. He will be able to give us good depth in the forward line and later go into the ruck when developed.

However history shows that ruck/forwards are dicey propositions and perhaps Hartlett is the safer option.

A midfield of Deledio, Axel, Tuck, Cotchin, Hartlett etc would mean that no matter who we are playing we will be in the game and may one day control games from the midfield, giving our forwards the best opportunity and our backs an advantage.

It's not as if we don't have tall options and if we take a tall at 26 and a ruck to develop later on we will have good list balance.

a draft of:

8 - Hartlett
26 - Mitch Brown/Shoenmakers/Lynch/Roughead
58 - Browne/Hill/Stanley/McCulloch

Would give us a great balance and a midfield that could create history.

agree with ya there. many have said pick a tall first due to the deficiencies but in my opinion, top 10 should be for best available.

Mate, if we over-looked Vickery for Hartlett, trust me, you will not disappointed. ;)

Re: Draft Discussion

I had a dream last night that our draft went like this lol.

Hartlett
Roughead
Sibosado
Cockshell

Re: Draft Discussion

ziebell, trengrove, hartlett

i'd be happy with any of these 3 with our first pick

Hartlett would be great, but if all goes according to plan, we're not gonna have a shot at a top ten big man for a while. And Vickery fits the bill perfectly of the one thing we really need to cap our side off.

Re: Draft Discussion

definately an interesting read, ive wanted ziebell or hartlett for a while now, its so easy to get caught up in the fact that mids give you such quick results and you can look forward to seeing them straight off the bat.. but i think we should take trengove or vickery, either one as i think one should be available.

ultimately we can get a solid midfielder with 26

Re: Draft Discussion

My semi-realistic wish list for this draft

8. Hartlett - midfielder - will give us what is on paper one of the best midfields of the next decade. Will go someway to ensuring we are always there abouts. Key position players are inconsistent. Even Buddy and Brown have days on which they don't deliver and considering there usually only 2 key forwards on the ground for one team in most games means that a side can be inconsistent if they need a forward to kick a bag. Carlton are a great point in case. Fev 99 goals and Carlton still missed the finals. Perhaps a better example is Brown and Bradshaw both kicking 70odd goals each and brisbane finished below us!
26. Mitch Brown - tall forward - is big enough at 195 and works hard. Can play the Cam Mooney/Roughead role and will free up JR to play as a third tall. Cleve at FF, Brown at CHF and JR floating gives us flexibility but straightens us up.
58. McCulloch - big bodied ruckman - a ruckman to develop. I think the Hawks proved you don't need star rucks on grandfinal day.
70. Charlie Sharples - small forward - he might not make it down this far but will be a bonus if he does. indigenous small forward who is hard at it and will tackle. a much needed element in our forward line.

I think Vickery looks like a very impressive player and he may be a star. But picking imbetween players i think is dangerous. Kosi at his best is sensational but the saints still don't know how to use him. I realise that Vickery is not Kosi however i would think he is a bigger risk than a mid such as Hartlett/Ziebell and i don't think we should really risk too much. We have an up and coming list and a very good mid will add something too it. If we wer the Hawks i would be more inclined to take a risk.

Anyway that's just my thoughts.

Re: Draft Discussion

trengove has been my first choice for pick 8 for a while but after much consideration i have realised that he wont be tall enough for a ruckmen although hes a super athlete and has a gret leap he wont be able to compete with likes of sandilands and cox at the tap. i still wouldnt ming getting him coz he could handy up forward and could pinch hit in the ruck. the only real ruckmen that would could get would be vickery if hes still there and i would love to get him he could be our number 1 ruckmen for the next 10 years.

but my new first choice for pick 8 is ziebell. he could complete our midfield hes the only real type of midfielder we lack a hard at it big body. i really think this guy could be the next voss or ricciuto absolutly love the way he plays. does anyone know who we seriously looking at?, or have had deep conversations with. is ziebell on our radar?

Re: Draft Discussion

somebody said previously (i think The Cotch) that the mail is Hartlett then Vickery then Swift are our preferences and i think Emma Quayle said something similar as well a couple of weeks back.

Yep thats true. We'll find out more tomorrow night, but I'd say thats still around the mark. Hartlett definite #1 though.

Re: Draft Discussion

Midfields win premierships. My opinion is that any player can be a good forward and to a lesser extent, defender if they have a gun midfield behind it all. Classic examples of this are Mooney (GEEL) and Lynch (WCE).

I won't be disappointed if we pick McKernan/Trengove/Vickery etc, but I would prefer that with our 1st rounder we go for a safer option and take a midfielder.

very well done. it's pretty much similar to my wish list anyway.

i mean my preference is definitely to get hartlett at 8. as for the other 3 picks, they're the positions that i wanted picked up, in the order u had as well (KPF, Ruck, small forward)

Re: Draft Discussion

Just cannot split Hartlett and Ziebell. Perhaps a tiny preference for Jack.

Vickery next

Later on, Cahill, Ash Smith, Mitch Brown all welcome at Punt Road

Re: Draft Discussion

Midfields win premierships.
I am sick of this bullshit line. Geelong's midfield is far superior to Hawthorn's, beat it on the day, and they still lost, because they had nothing to kick to. Hawthorn has two A-grade midfielders and one of them plays loose man in defence.
West Coast had one of the best midfields ever seen and only managed to beat Sydney's blue-collar midfield by a single point, and that was only because the man who won the match for Sydney the year before, key forward Barry Hall, had a shocker.
Essendon 2000 - super midfield? No. Super forward line, great defence, very good midfield. Brisbane - super midfield yes, but super everywhere. Super team.
Great teams win premierships. Teams that score more than their opponents win premierships. You have to kick it between the big sticks. Forwards specialise in that. Defenders specialise in preventing it. Midfielders specialise in giving forwards a chance to strut their stuff. But if they can't strut, you're very often stuffed.

just have a look at how west coast won there premiership. they had an average fwd line that rotated its awsome midfielders through and they kicked a large percentage of there goals.

the phrase "midfields win premierships" would never have arose if it wernt for the WCE team of 2004-06
