Some pre-season draft news from The Age (28/11):

The dozens of delisted players seeking a way back into the AFL through the pre-season draft may have as few as 10 chances.

With eight clubs confirmed non-starters in the mid-December draft, and Carlton and Essendon having already committed to players, there may be as few as seven live selections made.

The Kangaroos do not have a selection but may make an 11th-hour delistment by this Friday's third and final list lodgement deadline to create one, to take advantage of the fact that the Blues and Bombers ahead of them have already selected Cain Ackland and Mal Michael, respectively.

With Chris Bryan's departure, the Blues have a second selection but only St Kilda, which has three list vacancies, is also likely to take a second pick. Richmond, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and Collingwood, which has pitched a two-year offer to Bryan, are in for one round only.

THE PRE-SEASON DRAFT
CARLTON: Committed first pick to ruckman Cain Ackland and will make a second selection in wake of 11th-hour departure of Chris Bryan.

COLLINGWOOD: One selection, likely to be used on Bryan, who has been made a two-year offer.

ESSENDON: Committed only pick available to former Lion Mal Michael.

HAWTHORN: Has one pick which, a month ago, was being set aside for Carlton full-back Bret Thornton.

KANGAROOS: Likely. One further change to the list may be made that will give the Kangaroos the first live pick in the draft. Carlton and Essendon before them have already made their selections.

PORT ADELAIDE: One selection to make and has invited ex-Saint Troy Schwarze, among others, to train at the club.

RICHMOND: Chose not to use last pick in the national draft to keep options open. Has interest in former Cat Kent Kingsley.

ST KILDA: Has up to three vacancies on its list but seems certain to select no more than two players, the final number depending on salary-cap considerations. Interest in ruckmen including Clark Keating and Tristan Cartledge.

OUT: Adelaide, Brisbane Lions, Fremantle, Geelong, Melbourne, Sydney, West Coast, Western Bulldogs.

Can somebody explain the point of redrafting? I presume it was because there was no better rookie talent available at the time, or is it a requirement to have a certain amount of players off the list going into the draft?

You do have to delist a certain amount of players but I'm pretty sure we would have satisfied that requirement.

Perhaps as you say they just wanted to have a look at what was available or Ross Lyon was just impressed with his work ethic and attitude shown at training.
