AFL Club
Richmond
Thought about this awhile ago and this article reignited the fire.

As we know with the concessions, the suns get an extended list over the next few years which slowly gets trimmed down until its in line with afl clubs;
2011 - 48 senior list, nine rookies with $1m TPP extra allowance;
2012 - 46 senior list, nine rookies with $800k TPP extra allowance;
2013 - 42 senior list, nine rookies with $600k TPP extra allowance;
2014 - 40 senior list, nine rookies with $400k TPP extra allowance;
2015 - 38 senior list, nine rookies in line with other AFL clubs.

So whilst every club needs to delist players to enter the draft, GC will be delisting more to bring them inline with those requirements.

The point I want to make is, GC have a lot of young talent and due to the extra delistings they must make, certain players that have talent will still be dropped without GC really realising since the large list means some players havent had the chance to build confidence and have a decent crack and show their talent. I know they will obviously rigorously try to examine each player at training etc to make sure the worst are cut, surely there would be some slipping through the cracks (ie late bloomers ala shane tuck)

They could be getting rid of some real bargains we could pick up low risk with a 4th rounder/PSD pick/rookie picks:). Definitely something I think we should be looking at.

What are your thoughts??

Absolutely worth a look. Most of the guys delisted will be young guys who haven't got a look in because they weren't one of GCs high draft picks. There could be some talent there, perhaps more so than the guys available at picks 60+ in this year's draft.

Hopefully the club does their homework and might be able to draft a few steals. :thumbsu:

Exactly what I think, they had something like 8-10 senior players they poached who played most games this season, and roughly filled 12-14 spots with kids who would have been their 'high profile' talent and picks.

There should almost certainly be some unrealised talent in their somewhere we can steal... :cool:

they have 14 players coming out of contract, obviously they wont all leave, but there should be a few, id be looking more towards next year to get a good player, because they wont be getting rid of much more than half a dozen due to the week draft.

Possibly. Keep in mind they will get rid of their worst/least promising players. This may be kids who have been on their list a year or two, and not shown enough potential to make it at AFL level, or they might turn over some of the recycled/mature age recruits even though they are in their best 22, in the hope that the younger kids will start filling the roles currently taken by those types of players.

Will be interesting, but can't imagine too many quality players falling into laps of the other 17 clubs.

The other thing that could work to our favour is that they seemed to stock up on a lot of speculative rucks. Might be able to trade with them for one of these, but again they will be keen to retain the better prospects. Do we really want a GC discard?

Marc Lock is worth a look. Currently captain of the reserves as well as GC17 side and VFL Suns in 2010. Hes 192cm and about mid - high 80s in weight. Played as a tagger and running off half back in the VFL since making debut against Carlton where he ran with Judd and Walker.

Word is throughout the year they have been sending him back to work on different aspects of his game and learning new roles. I'de assume that hes (rightfully) frustrated with the toing and froing.

His contract runs out at the end of this season.

Edit: Kicked 6 last week.

I think the OP is a great one and l think its going to be a massive hunting ground for opposition clubs to entice good kids away from them.

No matter how you put it, or how many players they've got... they can still only play 22 each week. That is where the opportunity lies...

How many of these kids are going to get pissed off at not getting the opportunity, or, being told that you're on a rotation basis for games - ie. 5 games on, a couple back in the magoo's, because the GC need to rotate to see who can play and who cant.

They'll be looking at their contemporaries from the same draft and thinking... WTF? He's played 22, developing faster because of the game time because he's only competing with 38, of which only 5 are new draftees!

Huge potential... look at Josh Caddy. First game this year on the weekend as a first rounder. Next year... another bunch of draftee's come in. Who's to say the others who have already been blooded havent overtaken him and the new draftees that come in are more exciting.

Watch how many clubs try to rape GC back after all the initial two-year contracts expire at the end of next year.

;)

Caddy has been injured nearly all year so it is not that he has been overlooked or missed opportunities. He has played 2-3 games in the 2s this month and now is getting his first game.

Not sure the Suns is where we should be looking. They are playing against some pretty average opposition in the 2s compared to other kids in the VFL. Maybe that makes it even a better idea though... if you think there is some hidden talent that hasn't been developed well.

Could be an interesting rookie draft next year.

Great thread from OP, and i reckon it's stuff like this Puntroad that's that key to moving forward. Could a guy like this be our Duigan?
