Drafting in reverse order

Coming into 2008 we will have 3 consecutive #1 draft picks on our list.

Assuming we take Kreuze, on account of the types of players they are (ie. how much development they require to make an impact at AFL level, until what age they are likely to be able to still be effective at AFL level etc) it seems as though we have drafted them in the reverse order.

How much better would our team look coming into 2008 if it was Kreuzer's 3rd pre-season, Gibbsy's 2nd and Murph's 1st?

These 3 would then form the crux of a formiddable midfield combination that could be dominant from day 1 for a maximum possible period.

Exactly, back Hammo and AIsake and get Cotchin.....Gibbs, Murph and Cotch all up and flying while Juddy is still only 27 ;)

You're preaching to the converted -I was banging the Cotchin drum back when you were still saying that they were impossible to split.

I just wonder if you'd be banging the Kreuzer drum if it looked as though we were going to take Cotchin? :p

I am a hedonist, not a non-conformist.. ;)

So it's about being Gilly and not about being different?

Or is it about wanting everyone and not about being different?

Aren't they exactly the same?:D

Simple really, don't confuse narcissism with hedonism.......As a hedonist I am after instant gratification thus seeing Cotch tear it up next year ;).

Although in all seriousness, with the #1 pick give me the guy who will play 10-12 years and potentially win matches off his own boot anyday.

and who is to say that the two are mutually exclusive?

Take Cotchin. Ruckmen are over-rated. Get midfielders to read the opposition ruckman's taps and you're all sweet. I don't think our ruck stocks are a problem, our achilles is our defence.

Yeh Cotchin is an awsome player he puts people's prefered foot to shame with his non-prefered. A freak in other words. I've been told that Cotchin is better than Kruzer but Kruzer will go number 1 because of the position he plays and thats sad. Kruzer also got beaten in the National Championship by the other ruckmen but killed them around the ground. To me his a midfilder thats 199cm tall. Still needs to be developed as a ruckman but is a superb player in his own right. His agility to pick the ball off ground is first class for a player of his height but will need time to develope. Take your pick they will both be great just one needs a bit more time.

Contested situations are pretty hot in the AFL, won't be as easy for him to pick the ball up off the ground there....if you are looking for that, give me the 6ft gun any day of the week.....he will pick it up with cleans hands, explode away from the pack and hit the lead lace out with either foot...i can guarantee you Kreuz won't do that.

Gilly, in 3 years, who do you see being the better player?

I see Kreuz as doing 3-4 things a game where you think, "Man that is awesome for a guy of his size, nobody else his size does that". I see Cotchin doing 7-8 things a game (amongst his 20-odd possessions) that will really hurt the opposition.

They are quite obviously different types of players and will influence games differently. As people have correctly pointed out, big men take longer to develop and then their bodies are exposed to a lot of punishment.....you will get more long-term service out of Cotchin. He will also win more games off his own boot.

However at some stage you have to draft the big guys too. The old adage is you don't use high picks on big guys as it is too speculative.....Somebody like Kreuzer takes the speculation out of it, so the other side of the coin is why don't you draft a no-miss big guy when you get the chance.

We seem to have addressed our midfield depth and need for some grunt at the stoppages, so I suppose when you are given a chance like this to get the big fella, it makes sense to get him at #1.

In an ideal world I would have made a big play for a ruckman during trade week. The Judd deal might have excluded us from getting somebody like a Cam Wood, and after him there was probably either nobody we rated or we would have had to pay too much.........Ideally adding Judd, Warnock and Cotchin for arguments sake would have been my 10/10 scenario.

Also when you look at the potential draftees at #36 and #46 I think we are far more likely to find some more runners on our best avialable list falling to those picks than other ruckman.....after Kreuzer and McEvoy the ruck prospects are far more speculative.

As it works out we have Hadley and Judd and will most likely add Kreuzer to that.

Cotchin is still my #1 and I think willl be a more damaging player at AFL level, but as I have always maintained, only by a nose.
