Franklin loves Hawthorn, says so at every opportunity and has expressed his wish to be a 1 club player. He plays every second week in front of huge crows on the biggest stages in Melbourne. There is no way someone like that is going to come back to Perth. He LOVES it there and he is a superstar!

i went to school with a bloke that is coaching one of the PSA 1st football teams and he said that there is a monster of a kpf coming through one of the school teams that is yet to have much attention but he said he will be a shoe in to be drafted in the next draft. Im sure more and more of these kpf will pop up as the year goes on, the season hasn't started yet remember.

can we hide him somehow? :D

Fair points, but in response...Chris Judd walking & Money talks (Mitch Clark). To say less than zero - you just don't know 100% as a person until you have to answer the question with a genuine offer in front of you. FWIW I don't think he will leave either - but that doesn't mean FFC shouldn't be doing everything in their power to have a crack.

What are you basing that on?

franklin has stated multiple times that he is a hawk for life, his family are all living in melbourne and the fact that after we make a massive offer to him, hawthorn have the chance to counter-offer, they would rather lose luke hodge than franklin. he aint going anywhere

Pretty sure Buddy has just signed a new deal recently. Hawthorn supporters if you read any of this stuff should be able to confirm.
Good wishful thinking though-can't hurt.

Franklin - not going anywhere think he signed a contract late last year.

Goddard as a KPF is much more likley and is unrestricted.

Would be great if we snare a really talented KPF who comes good in a few years for us but with a late 1st round pick likely history is against us doing that for the really to shelf ones. All of the really top shelf KPF's in the comp were drafted early by clubs at the bottom of the ladder (tanking or just terrible) or were F/S. Given that is not an option for us we just need to hope we can buck the trend/get lucky.

Strategy has to be try for Goddard or other ready made in a trade/free agency bid, continue trying to develop Clarke, Moller. Anthony etc already on our list or soon to be plus draft best available KPF and hope something comes off well enough to go with what we have to take us forward. Have no doubt Lyon will work out a strategy to best work with what we can actually have at hand.

There will be some bolters throughout the year ...always is.

Anyway with Jack kicking 23 goals and his head kicking 17 for the season, combined with Lachie's accidental ingestion of Human Growth Hormone ...I think a mid or two may just be the tonic.

Agree with everything you say here except that Goddard is a KPF. He's a very talented utility player, and could play KPF. But that wouldn't be where we'd get best value out of him. And we'd have to pay a hell of a lot to get him.

Genuinely don't think we'd have a chance grabbing Goddard, or that we'd be interested in paying the price ($ and picks) to get him.

Agree that jagging a good KPF via the draft will require a bit of creativity, because we're unlikely (hopefully) to be landing top picks in the next few years.

EDIT: Actually did a bit of checking on Wikipedia. Despite the vast majority of KPFs drafted in the national draft not making the grade, the following guys were around at picks we're likely to have in the next couple of years Tom Lynch (GC, 11), Sam Reid (Sydney, 36), Jack Riewoldt (Richmond, 13), Chris Dawes (Pies, 28) and Kurt Tippett (Crows, 32). They're there, but hard to pick the right ones. Hopefully we get lucky.

Moller has been rated on a draft discussion board as top 20 in this years draft.
Is he still interested in Freo?
The other guy from NSW, Head its harder to find much info on him, but there are two guys who are talls.
Moller can play as a forward/ruck type, but like Warnock is seriously skinny.
If he decides to stay in NSW, do we get compensation, or swap players, picks, for his services?

Blue Shark,

If a kid wants to stay in NSW, and GWS want to sign him, then Fremantle can make this difficulty by main listing him and so on.

Given the fact GWS needs to shrink its list, lower-round draft picks - the sort that were paid for Brogan and Cornes - arent valued much by GWS.

Therefore, the simplest way for a kid who doesnt want to leave NSW would be to trade his rights to GWS for a pick that GWS doesnt need.

Same reply i posted somewhere else.

The value of Cornes / Brogan is very different to a player not near the end of his career. I would think Moller would be worth more to Freo than a 4th round pick depending on his form this year. 4th round is pretty close to a nothing pick these days.

Not sure you are able to trade your scholarship players. Not outlined anywhere. Maybe he could be bundled with something for a pre-draft 17.y.o. pick presuming you're allowed to trade him, which i doubt you are. This would also be of the proviso that Fremantle are willing to trade him after having him on scholarship for 3 years. The AFL didn't allow the convoluted O'Meara trade, so anything too outrageous is unlikely to be allowed.

The only way that Moller can not come to Fremantle is for the AFL to change the rules. He will either;

1) Be a listed Fremantle player
2) Be barred from entering the draft
3) Or, the AFL will alter the rules to suit GWS

For what it's worth, I believe the rules will be adjusted and Fremantle will be screwed into rookie pick #1 for him.

I would think we have a strong case to list him unobstructed. If he wants to go home then do so after 2 years. If the club environment is good and he has a good circle of mates/girlfriend may be a harder decision for him. Irrespective, If top 20 is true then all those doubters about our draft strategy can add him to the positive list.

4. He gives up the scholarship, becoming an unlisted player and is taken as a zone selection.

I'd prefer this didnt happen, but the best way to deal with "go home" or "stay home" kids is to do a deal.

Sure, theres then the question about value, but the worst case for Fremantle is to use a list spot and salary cap on a kid who doesnt want to live there or play for them.

That said, as a fan I think GWS have so much young talent that I dont really care if he stays a Fremantle player - Im just outlining what I think the two teams could do if they put their mind to it.

Reneging on his contract doesn't make him available for a zone selection, he is excluded from the draft as per the current rules.

The AFL would need to adjust their position to allow it, which they would.

there is an article about this that indicates withdrawing from the scholarship is possible with non-specified penalties. The legalities also may be interesting given the scholarship was signed as a 16 year old.

As you can see there is a bit of a grey area in the rules

11. What happens if we do not feel comfortable with the club who has selected my son?
The National Draft and Rookie Draft are the only process for allocating Australian players who have previously played Australian Rules football amongst clubs. Ordinarily there are no other means for being placed on an AFL club playing list. Clubs, however, are able to trade existing listed players for draft picks or other listed players.

And if a trade comes on the cards then this might allow you to pick up Jack Martin who is not eligible for the draft until 2013 but looks like being a top 3 draft pick. So you guys could still end up with a very good result. And from the GWS point of view it would allow us to have the first sydney bred player on our books.

12. What if my son wishes to pull out of the program?
If a player on a scholarship elects to pull out of the program at any stage the player can do so and the scholarship is null and void immediately. Any future financial support will be terminated. However depending on the circumstances of the player leaving the program there may be restrictions placed on him entering into future National and Rookie drafts.

And the question here would the AFL make a ruling so GWS could have a talented sydney bred player on there books

Martin or Jesse Hogan for Moller I could live with. Both (particularly Hogan) would probably still play AFL ahead of Moller who will need several years of bulking up to be able to play.

A trade or deal of some kind looks pretty likely I would have thought.
If Fremantle hadn't already lined something up, surely they would have moved hell and high water to get him over here during the holiday period,
to bond with the players and get an idea how it all works, so if he were to come over, it would take a bit of the shock factor away.
Just seems strange not to bring him over to me.

That would be inappropriate for a number of reasons. It is a program they instigated. They also have in that blurb, which actually is not the rules I would think but as they say answers some frequently asked questions (the rules would be a contract of sorts) that sanctions about nominating for the draft may be imposed if the player reneged on the scholarship. That is, he could be banned from the draft for a season or two.

Well Moller needs time to develop so that should work out well for GWS ;)
But really for a ban to take place it would have to be an extreme situation, which this isn't.

What it says is;

I am trying to think of what your idea of an extreme circumstance could be, apart from breaching the scholarship "contract" to go to another club.

I didn't actually see in there where it said it had to be an extreme situation. But anyway, I think the AFL regard draft tampering and manipulation as extreme don't they?

Yes and No - e.g. Kieran Jack non investigation to not lodging his draft papers.

Really the rules are clearly in our favour, but the question is whether they will be enforced when it may compromise the good of the game in the key GWS market. We are right to be sceptical on that question.

For now hope the club is doing everything to show that Freo is the place to be if they want him and take GWS out of the question. Get on the band wagon for the premiership window Craig!

Is there any other example? Since it was exposed they copped significant flack, and it was to an extent "hidden" unlike the Moller situation which will be opaque.
