With so many ********s more than happy to jump in their car after 5 or 15/20 drinks only a second away from killing my mum or your mum something drastic needs to be done, and quickly.

I suggest we make the passenger/s responsible.

Anyone guilty of riding with an over the limit driver cops double what the driver gets. This offence should be at least a $5000 fine and no license for 5 years.

Anyone in doubt if the driver is fit to drive will be too scared of the massive penalties and hopefully we can create a culture.

Any better suggestions?

errrm why should the passenger get a bigger fine then the douche behind the wheel? everyone (both young and old drivers) need to learn that vehicles are not toys or games they are dangerous weapons and that they are not only responsible for the safety of themselves but every other driver on the road.

maybe as a part of the licensing system a road trauma session needs to be attended? i've been to one and they are downright awful. Had a lady whose daughter died in an accident caused by a drunk driver 15 years ago break down in tears.... very much a wake up call.

also the government should take heed of what countries like sweden etc do as they have ridiculously low road tolls. that being said considereing we have a population of 21mil or so 300 road deaths a year is pretty low in my opinion.

People/ the media also need to consider before making stupid suggestions/punishments that there will always be variables on the road (eg: weather conditions, poor vehicle maintenance, poor road maintenance, poor signage, poor driving skills) that will always cause an accident/fatality so I think in the scheme of things Australia is not doing to badly.

I like how you're thinking outside the box, but it will never happen.

While you can be over .05 with a couple of pints or glasses of wine, not many people show visible signs of being under the influence.

an even more simple solution would be to lower the limit to either 0.02 or 0.00.... then there is no room for errors of judgement. either way ridiculously fining people, crushing cars, jail sentences are stupid ways to solve the problem

prevention is better then a cure

Better suggestions than that?
Well how about every car is installed with a specially trained panda who can telepathically detect whether you have been drinking or not and from there can inflict an immediate disabling karate chop to the driver's throat if they are found to be over the limit.

Apart from that, I can't come out with much else that beats your idea.

I would like to see offending hoons cars crushed...and make the driver watch it happening!.......Word would get around the young ones if this was to happen on a regular basis, no ifs or buts, then they would be scared to do the irresponsible thing knowing what the CONSEQUENCES are....Their cars are their pride and joy, take that away from them....it is the only way to make them take notice and to THINK..

They need to be made to understand the full meaning of consequences for their actions..

I work with quite a few young ones and they aren't home to watch the t.v TAC ads or read newspapers about terrible accidents....they are out and about having a good time and doing these stupid things..

A couple of them at work didn't even know there had been a dreadful accident the other day that killed 5 people!

Visits to jails to visit convicted drink drivers /drug drivers / speeding drivers / major trafic offences etc.

Obviously the hospital to meet victims of road trauma and rehab centres.

I'm in favour of crushing hoons cars too.

I think there should also be a review of speed limit signs. Ie the ones hidden behind trees, pointed on an angle etc really need to be replaced before getting this tight.

People also need to think- have I had a few drinks- perhaps I shouldn't drive.
.05 is guesswork. Mandatory alcohol locks on cars or should people buy their own breathalysers to try and help themselves work out if they are legally sober. Don't think the breathalyser is the way to go somehow.

Stricter penalties for hoon driving / culpable driving / manslaughter would be good but with the situation our jails are in, I can't see that happening.

People who lose their license/car will drive anyway.

I did some work experience at a magistrates court and every 2nd case was repeat drink drivers & people caught driving without a license. You think these people who get busted did it once and got unlucky? No chance, they are out there right now re-offending without getting caught. They'll be at the pub this weekend, get hammered and drive home as per usual.

Honestly the only complete solution is deportation or execution :D

No matter how many rules there are, idiots will continue to drink drive (most of them don't think they are over the limit). The only way to stop it is to ban alcohol...........which won't happen

Perhaps you might need to think this through a little more

I've known a few people who've been caught (and lost their licence) for drink driving, and honestly, as harsh as it may sound and as many people that would complain and kick up a fuss about it, I'd like to see there be a straight 0.00 limit enforced. People's recklessness and lack of value for their life astounds me sometimes, particularly many young people. You don't have to live your life wrapped in cotton wool, but the unneccessary risks that some people take (drink driving being one of them) are something I just don't understand. Obviously not everyone takes stupid risk, but when there's people out there who are more concerned with not getting caught by the police than the danger they're putting their own life into by drink driving, then the message still isn't getting through and a harsher policy needs to be put into place, and IMO that policy is outlawing all driving under the influence of alcohol.

If people didn't binge drink, took the job at hand more serious and drank everyday their tolerance would grow and therefore not be affected by alcohol as much.

Well you could be really sensational and ask why people need to drink to the point of drunkeness at all, or why they should "take the job at hand more seriously" and "work" towards "getting their tolerance up", but that's another discussion entirely.
