Ross Lyon has done a bloody good job all year and is the best match day coach we have ever had. But Ross you made a mistake before the game by dropping Keplar, Clarke was a bloody witches hat tonight! yes he has talent but he was poor for East Perth last week and didn't deserve a call up and Keplar did a great job for Pav last week.

You got that one wrong. Also, if you are listening - sign up Walters tomorrow for two years pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee:)

If Kep had an awesome Afro would have got a game!
Zack will be good in time but thought he didn't provide as much as Kep up forward. He provides a contest and provides room for Pav and bring in the chaos theory that allows spills for our great crumbers in Ballas and Walters.

Regretfully agree. Reckon if we won then Kepler for zac would've been the changes. Always easier in hindsight but Kepler does
always give us a contest.

Agreed by me as well. Bad move.
I do think Clarke has potential, but to substitute him for Kep in a final after last week against Geelong... gotta wonder what the thinking was.

Must admit, I'd thought it wouldn't make a huge difference. Keps would give you a harder contest, Clarke better chase down tackling and ruck work. In the end, Clarke didn't really play to his strengths much and was near useless around the ground. Not sure it cost us the game, but for sure I'd like to have seen that game again with Keps playing instead.

FWIW, Clarke had a similar game against them last time he played, so it's not like it came out of the blue.

Ross was asked about this before the game.

He said he chose Zac with an eye to the future.

He said it was important for his development to play a final and that it would help his pre-season.

Also said that against Adelaide with Sam Jacobs we needed a genuine second ruckman to help Sandi out and that Keplar wasn't that.

Would have gone ok if he could hold a mark. Pre-game this was a questionable move. With the aid of 20/20 hindsight it was the wrong decision.

Turned out to be a bad move yes, one of Lyon's few moves to backfire this season.

But did anyone see how f**ked Sandi was in that second half? He could barely muster a contest half the time. With the amount of footy he's missed this year I think Ross figured he needed support more than most of our players after the short week. At face value Clarke looked to be the more valuable of the two in the ruck... but unfortunately he had another poor game.

How do you assess Clarke's potential based on what we've seen so far?

Interesting. Gutsy in a way. And will hopefully pay off. Nice to hear the rationale.

But our forward structure was pretty poor in the last half. Our mids were tired and that amplified it. Zac has a lot to learn about forward play, hopefully it'll continue to be a focus over the off season.

Potential is high but his output is a long, long way from reaching it yet.

Problem is he's a genuine ruckman who looks a little clueless up forward... but to get a game alongside Sandi you need to be able to play forward effectively for 75% of the game. Needs to start clunking his marks but that's always something that comes with age for guys his size.

I've got high hopes for him but he needs to toughen up considerably. A few years ago we were raving about the way he hunted and tackled when he was on the ball but that seems to have disappeared lately, or he's going about it in a clumsy way and giving away silly frees.

Problem is he's sort of stuck in limbo at the moment. Not as good as Kep if we need a genuine forward and not as good as Griff if we need a genuine ruckman.

Ross loves his one liners. He probably should have remembered "the future is now".

Freo had a real chance tonight and this season. The game was in your hands tonight. To gift a bloke a game for experience sake is ... interesting. Not doubting he is a good coach. Would probably admit it was the wrong call.
