Offensively he was alright but he's not much of a defender and that probably won't change. Not much else we could do though missing Laidler, White, Bower and Austin.
I wouldn't even put Austin name along that list and a 150 + gamer in Thornton his barely done nothing in AFL terms in half of a decade.Bower had the injuries also but shown us what he has. Laidler done well in his first season and White handy for depth for now.

Hardly can be "missing" Austin...he's been out for so long that he's right up there with the Lochness Monster and Bigfoot as a Carlton myth.

I think henderson playing as a defender in the reserves is preparation for bower not returning, and with kreuzer to come back as a forward/ruck type, thats where id be tempted to play him.

Setanta pretty much clinched the game for us IMO (the obvious one of Walker's goal aside). He marked when they went inside 50 with a minute to go and controlled the ball deep inside their forward with seconds to go. He kept his head and showed a ton of poise that the old Irish wouldn't have.

He also managed to spot up a few targets from a distance, an aspect that has never been a part of his game.

Setanta is an interesting one. Obviously offers more than hampson around the ground and can play multiple positions. Thought his 2nd half was very good although butchered the ball a little.

However, warnock seemed to really tire against both Sydney and St Kilda. Without Hampson i think he is getting a lot more game time and is tiring. This means we are getting less from him around the ground. Hampson also offers more in the ruck than setanta.

Do we bring hampson back in to give warnock more help in the ruck or keep with setanta? I think setanta will be kept, just hope he offers more in the ruck.

Is it just me or do we seem to play our best football when Setanta is in the team (and playing well).

Seems to give us more options.

His versatility is definitely giving us something, when his legs aren't giving him trouble we can see Big Setant moves very very well for a man of his size and he can really be an option wherever he plays. He might butcher it a bit but he's also capable of bullet passes, he's just unpredictable like that.

His follow up work in the ruck has been very good too, though his tap work will probably never be too good.

Agreed on all counts. Is definitely worth his place. If he had converted better last night could have had at least three, but the one he got was under pressure and vital, and the defensive mark at the death showed his full mettle. Pure gold.

Yeah but the first 2 were by choice... They didn't have to play Thornton.
TBird did alright for a 3rd tall. Read the play well tonight and chopped off a few forays into the StKilda fwd line.

I would argue that Hampson competes a lot more in terms of match time in the Ruck but Setanta seems to be getting his hand to the ball a lot more. He's worth persevering with a lot more than Hampson. When Kreuzer is back and firing and we make the finals, Hampson will offer us absolutley nothing. Irish however will be a Handy Forward cum backup ruckman, and is way more agile & hungry.

Um, don't think we chose for Laidler and White to be injured. The MC went for Thornton in front of Watson, but it's understandable that they went that way, and also understandable that they might go the other way next week.

I love watching O'hAilpin play.
He is just so unorthodox.

Me to Korn, he just lays it all on the line.
I;m a fan

Duigs...just great and Walker...having a ripper year

Walker was average last night.

1 mark and 1 tackle is not nearly enough output from him.

I know people are having a big lovefest over his goal but for a player at his age and his experience he should be far more consistent in his performances than he is.

Should be a Ryan O'Keefe like player but for some reason can't seem to string a decent run together.

ohhhh the big setant was huge last night, love how he just gooes for the ball.

duigs i have to say has been our best recruit for a couple years

i can see tex having a huge year this year, expecting 40 goals from him this year, he's finally found his place in the team and he loves it

Tex is showing that he can also play smart by making intelligent leads and not just trying for ridiculous hangers.

15 goals from 7 games, placing him Top 10 in the Coleman Medal & only 2 goals behind our leading goalkicker (Garlett), suggests he has performed consistently since given a lengthy stint in the forward line (he also kicked 3 goals in last year's EF).

Walker, along with Betts, Garlett, Waite, has been instrumental in the improved defensive pressure we've seen in our forward line this season (some of it perceived pressure), yet is kicking goals as well. I don't think you can ask much more than that from a forward, particularly in an era when the task of forwards is made that much more difficult by clusters, presses, rolling zones (aka flooding) etc.

Walker - yep - great to see people seeing his positives, haters are going to hate though hey......lets not forget he was benched for kicking too many goals, saving our arses and being generally awesome - Ratten must read the BF blues forums......

it's bloody great to see duigs doing so well. have obviously watched him pretty closely over the last few years at norwood.

his 1 handed runs with the ball are sensational. i remember a goal he kicked last yr running from the hbf, had about 4 1 handed touches on the ground and drilled the goal from 50.

a certain sanfl premiership captain has also said that he was the most difficult player to tackle in the league cos hes so strong through the hips.

hopefully he keeps it up. im getting more enjoyment out of of watching him, puopolo and nick lower continuing on their form from last yr (that got us into a grand final after being 0-4), than watching the inept crows.

Duigs - "I feel we are building something special here and I'm rapt to be apart of it" ...... Class Duigs, class! Speaks volumes of the attitude of the guy

Seriously.........The bloke finally has a full uninterupted pre season, finally he is played in position and given a defined role after 100 games and he is playing some seriously good footy and still supporters take pot shots.

We are flying, our forward structure is the best it has been in years and every single player is contributing.

Duigan is a gun and exactly what we need, recruiters have done a fantastic job and it's great to see young blokes like Watson not having to be thrown in the deep end, like Walks and other were in the beginning.

Echo the sentiments of an earlier poster in that in watching his interviews, after years of Fevola, this guy is a just a class act and the type of 'solid citizen' you can build clubs around.

I know its early but he could actually be a potential future captain as he just has 'leader' written all over him.

I think Jamison needs to be given a toast aswel. His effort on Riewoldt in the first half was extrodinary. Completely spooned riewoldt in one-on-ones and also had plenty of attacking plays that set up forward thrusts.

Like I give a crap what the Herald Sun has to say.

Rather than just being a blinkered fan actually watch games yeah.

Was he flying in those games where we played teams in the top 8?

The answer is no. He managed 4 possessions against Collingwood and Essendon repsectively and 9 against a slumping St Kilda.

He's kicked his bag of goals against weak opposition.

At his age, his experience level, he should be up there with the leaders of the club instead of being a bit player in the forward line.
