What was the reason in the finals then?
I thought he played pretty well in finals hard to impact on a wet night. Gawn had a better second half. Mcevoy was pretty good last year as well just missed 6 weeks with a face fracture this year coming into finals.

He's not top 3 on talent if every ruck was fit, and consistently playing good footy, but they haven't been. He's probably been the third best ruckman over the last 2 years if you look at consistency over the last two seasons. You can't include players like NicNat who've spent the bulk of that time injured. Many said McEvoy was unlucky not to be on the AA extended squad last year, with Ryder, Jacbos and Kreuzer edging him out. This year, Grundy and Gawn clearly ahead. If you average out the performance of all the rucks over the last two years, it isn't silly at all to say McEvoy has been the third best in the competition.

Martin is a good ruck, but used differently to McEvoy. Martin has kicked two goals total over the last 2 seasons, McEvoy has kicked 20. Martin is also a clanger king. McEvoy has been super reliable for 2 years in a row, probably being top 5 in both years, which given the ebb and flow of the others in the top 5 in those two years, places him as about third best performing ruck over the 2 year period.

If GWS want McEvoy then it would be a swap with no first round picks involved (maybe a second rounder thrown in), but I'd say there is zero chance of us parting with him. McEvoy himself was a top 10 first rounder when he was drafted.

If GWS cant pay Shiel, how they going to pay McEvoy

Your mate Furn2 said he was top 2-3 ruckman.

It was a terrible statement.

The Saints are a far better team then their ladder position this season IMO. They have potential for success.
An A grade mid could make all the difference for them, they could be an attractive prospect for Shiel, with a bigger pay packet for him than Hawks.

If The Saints are offering 1.3 a season he should take it, Amazing deal.

See I disagree. I watch a lot of the saints and more or less they’re my 2nd team due to my other half, I thought they had potential 2 years ago but their young kids haven’t developed, the majority of them are too small and as a side I have to say their kicking is deplorable. Bad drafting combined with a seemingly unhappy environment will see them down the bottom for quite some time IMO.

If I were Carlton & St.Kilda , I would be keen to give up Picks 1 & 3 respectively based on their recent flops in Weitering & McCartin.

Dylan Shiel is a safe option.

Wouldn't want to stuff it up again in the 'super' draft. :thumbsu:
yeah would hate to do a fremantle and take Trent croad instead of luke hodge

Besides gold coast I see stkilda as the least attractive team to go to in the AFL. They have one potential A grader on there list in Gresham, the worst coach in the league and despite having a history of early picks I'm not a fan of any of there young talent besides Marshall. The fact someone like hannebery has been targeted and offered 4 years should be a red light warning for anyone considering them that success is a while away.

I think this is a by product of our horrendous game plan which means we are almost always kicking under pressure.

Richo likes to put an extra man or two in the contest or behind the ball so we end up handpassing a lot due to lack of options forward which means we end up bombing it or by the time we have a chance to kick we are under too much pressure. Club admitted that after the first few games the players had no confidence in the game plan and it showed, we were abysmal.

Hopefully Ratten can help with this.

Right now I would have to agree that on the face of it we are obviously a much less attractive proposition, which is why we need to use $$ as an incentive.

In spite of the that, I honestly believe with some more leadership (Hannebery?) and better coaching we have some decent potential and will be a much better team. It’s still a really hard sell but at least we seem to be actively addressing the areas I mentioned above.

No one forced those clubs to trade with us. In fact we’ve given more gifts than anyone I can think of (B. Hill, S. Mitchell, Lewis) for next to nothing.
Some of our supporters here can be a little arrogant sure, but don’t get that mixed up with Hawthorn being ‘bullies’ because we’re capable traders.
You guys wanted to get rid of Mitchell and Lewis.

So you don't mind including McEvoy in the trade instead of Ceglar :p[/
Are you serious? Cochrane flipped us over sans vas 2 years ago until the last 30 secs of trade week!

The others you mentioned were fair trades. Lake - clubs were laughing at us at the time for picking up a washed up / injured hack! Lulz.

Short memory.

But that doesn't suit the narrative.

The Hawks routinely over pay. Look at Impey last year, O'meara the year before.

The hawks paid pick 25 for Gibson and nobody expected him to become the player he did after 65 games in 5 years at North.

We paid our first and second pick for Gunston.

The Dogs got turned a second round pick into a first for Lake when he was 32.

I think Ratten is a massive get by you guys. I actually called it towards the end of the season that he would be your head coach by next season (got that wrong- so far anyway).
I hope it’s a case of the lack of confidence in the game plan, my better half and I go to quite a few games throughout the season and watch them all, it has been painful for this neutral so I can imagine how it’s been for you guys. Im a bit disappointed the Saints have offered Shiel as much as they have, I think it’s a bad move for the club and they’re best of going to the draft and developing. Just my 2 cents.

So pay 2 firsts for Shiel....
If Shiel nominates us we will work with the Giants to get a fair deal for both parties.

If that is 2 first rounders, it's 2 first rounders.

If it's trading up to get a higher first round pick we will do that.

Plus add in about 100 different other scenarios it could be.

Fair enough. I'd be interested in Saints fans perspective.
Things can turn around pretty quick too, my team were shite in 2016.

Think that guys analysis is pretty terrible.
We lack leadership but he can’t believe we have targeted Hannebery, a VC from another club who is well known for his ridiculous training standards? Righto.
Only likes the look of Marshall? A 12 gamer? He does look good but I’d argue some of our other youngsters look better.
No doubt we had a shocking year, but as you say it can turn around pretty quickly. If we managed to snag Shiel on top of Hannebery then our midfield looks a million times better. Means Jack Steven won’t get ALL opposition attention and Steele’s form in the back half of the year was sensational. Get Bruce and Roberton back next year and our fwd and def looks better too. Just need to sack the coach now.

Like I said he's arguably the third best ruckman in the AFL over the last 2 years, so I don't see how "2-3" translated as "terrible statement".

In fact if you weight consistency over a single year performance you could even justify rating him as higher than #3 over the last two years.
