Thought he had the most impressive draft highlights from that class. I desperately wanted him. Had never heard of Will Day until a week before the draft. Pretty amazing how it's turned out.

(ps. Sydneys youth looks super solid so i'm sure they aren't absolutely kicking themselves that Stephens hasn't exploded yet. I still expect him to stay honestly).

Yeah, same happened with Martin to the blues from the suns..

Melbourne had the chance to “jump”.. they had a pick before carlton..

They even rang up Martin’s manager and asked if he would be keen to come over to the dees and they were kindly told no..

Once a player commits to another team.. they nearly always get there..
Melbourne should have picked him anyway. That would have put an end to all the BS of non-FAs acting like free agents.

Stephens also revealed he has been in regular contact with Adelaide.

“I’ve spoken to them (Adelaide) a fair bit throughout the year,” he said.

“Pick No.4 is pretty early and there’s a lot of good players in the pointy end of the draft. I’d love to go to the Crows and I’d love to stay here (in Adelaide), but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.”

What did you expect him to say? Especially in light of the fact he might have been picked by Adelaide.

I’m not saying he wouldn’t be keen to seek a trade there. I don’t know. Just that heading to Adelaide isn’t exactly going home.

Surely he’d be keen to get to any club that can offer security and opportunity.

As a side note he’s supposedly a really nice and grounded kid (my friend was his teacher).

Gotta earn opportunity and try and keep it
No club can guarantee that

Look, I agree that the number one thing he would want is opportunity, especially now.

The Crows might have a SMALL leg up over some other teams, but that's a combination of location and obvious opportunity there.

Heard there is some work behind the scenes for him to get traded to the Pies with another Swan via a three way trade with another club. Especially if Pyke signs on as coach
Interesting. So he's not getting an opportunity at Sydney, but he's going to follow a Sydney coach to Collingwood?

I could see him going to a Melbourne based club fwiw.

Our midfield sucks, what's hard to believe about this? Appropriate age profile as well.

It's hard to believe that, after not getting opportunities at Sydney, he's going to follow a Sydney coach to a new team.

Lynch would be a good get for for us, but not for a second round pick. He's worth about what we got for Pittonet a couple of years back. Similar age, played the same amount of games. Only got a 4th rounder in that one.

The proposed deal screws Sydney and Hawthorn to benefit Collingwood.

Effectively Lynch for Stephens and Bell for the Pies is fantasy stuff. The kind of shit you might pull off in some management simulation game, but would be laughed out of the room for offering IRL.

If he leaves I doubt we get fair value, but Stephens alone is probably worth more than Lynch.

Very generous of us, so probably true, nothing we love more than accepting token picks
I'd say it's slightly different to the norm here because of how highly we rate Stephens, and the fact that he'd be on shit all money.

With players like Aliir, Jones, and Titch, it wasn't just a matter of not wanting to keep players that didn't want to be there, it was also an acknowledgment that we were better off with the extra cap space if we let them go. I don't think that will come into consideration with Stephens.

Also very surprised that any other team would be courting Bell.

I really like him, but I think he's only on the fringes of our best 22 because his game style fits perfectly into our set-up. I think he'd really struggle to impact games in virtually any other team.

Feel like he has more value at the Swans (albeit not that much) than he would anywhere else.
