Of course you are. I mean any comparison over the last generation (i.e. 20 years) with our club would show who the true pissant club is. We have more wins, more premierships, more grand finals, more supporters, more members and more money.

Life is ebb and flow, for the first half a century we dominated like no other club ever will, for the 2nd half we were still very successful but unlucky in grand finals, sometimes the footy gods make you pay for too much success (see Cousins)

But let me tell you just how great this club is, we rested on our laurels for the last 50 YEARS... and are still the most popular, famous, high profile, supported club in the land!

Any other club that had so little success in the last 50 years would end up being a Bulldogs, Kangaroos or Saints

They certainly wouldn't be the biggest drawcard in the land as we are...

Collingwood are mythical in magnitude!

I thought it through. I just (foolishly) believed you were rational enough to understand the difference between suburban footy between part timers in a 12 team league and the professional footy played under the AFL banner.

The political decision to keep the old records remains nothing more than that i.e. petty politics.

But enjoy your fantasy world. We all know who the big successful clubs are in the AFL. In fairness, you guys are probably 4th - not too bad!

The differrence between the AFL and the old VFL is chalk and cheese.

The WAFL & SANFL were so much stronger than they are now that it would seem obvious that the VFL was weaker. There were several seasons and periods of history (as evidenced by National Carnival results) which demonstrate that at times the VFL wasnt ven the strongest state league.

We all know the AFL is much more than an expanded VFL. Only fools would think otherwise.

If you reckon your history is more successful than ours, then fine. If you reckon you are currently a bigger or more successful side than WC then you are kidding yourself.

The competition has always been in a state of constant change and constant improvement. Not just the last 20years, anyone who thinks this is being naive.

Remember only 8 teams founded the original VFL. University eventually folded and Footscray, Hawthorn and North Melbourne joined much later at various stages. So does that mean all VFL history prior to these 'new' teams joining is irrelevant?...Of course not, because a VFL/AFL premiership is still an award for excellence; no matter when it was won. To win it you needed to be the best football team in this country. The old VFL may have been state-based, but it was still the 'premier league' for Aussie Rules.

Clubs have relocated, clubs have merged and new clubs have joined in the years since, and the AFL will continue to change.

So using you logic Eagle87, does that mean in 20 years when the AFL has expanded and Power-house clubs in New Zealand and Asia are winning premierships, the West Coast's 3 flags mean nothing because they were won in the 'old AFL system' that was limited to teams in one country only?....think about it.

The Collingwood Football Club has been able to maintain its intensity and iconic image (whilst winning 14 flags and having the hightest winning % of any team...60.4%) for over 100years, the real measure of success for clubs like the Eagles will be to see if they can do the same.

Seems to be the way with champion teams, Brisbane won 3 in a row and haven't had much to gloat about since.

I am hoping for a close game, I remember the last time we were in Perth we went down by I think around 3 goals, we fought back in the last but we had given away a big lead in the Third.

The last game in Melbourne was a close good contest as well.

If we lose we lose, I hope to see my team fight this to the very end.

No problem with your state of flux argument but surely taking stats from amateur suburbam leagues and mixing them with fully professional national leagues with drafts and salary caps is fraught.

The reality is that since the AFL started you winning percentage is way less than that of West Coast. At 58.42%, you will find that we have been more successful than any side (except the Brisbane Lions when viewed as a separte entity from the Bears - which doesnt seem a reasonable division to me). So for the last 20 years we have been the most successful side.

I would strongly suggest that there is currently no measure based on the 20 years of our history that has the Pies ahead of the Eagles.

This would suggest to some you arent as successful as us.


NOTE: The sides that Collingwood have the worst win/loss record against are (in order) Brisbane (Lions), West Coast, Port, Carlton, Essendon and Freo. So interstate sides and power Melbourne clubs touch you up. You do have a 96% winning percenatge against University though - thats important!

Crap!.........The National Carnivals were exactly that, a carnival. When's the last time you ever heard anyone other that a Port Adelaide supporter talk about it?

If the WAFL and the SANFL were such great competitive leagues, how come the best West Australians and South Aussies (nd every other state for that matter) came to Victoria to play?

Wayne Carey, Polly Farmer, John Platten, Jason Dunstall, James Hird, Malcom Blight, Peter Hudson, all non-Victorians who chose to leave their home states and play footy in the VFL. Are you suggesting that there was players that were better than these blokes running around in the SANFL and the WAFL?
I'm amazed!! Can you name them?

Better still, can you name 5 non-west Australian champions that left their home states to go and play footy in W.A....remember, they have to be as good as the blokes I've listed.

Yeah, but I meant before..... lets say.... 1989. Before the national competition existed, back in the days of VFL, WAFL and SANFL only.

That's why I listed Hudson and Polly Farmer etc. Super footballers who could have played in any team in the the country, yet chose to leave their homes and play for little ole suburban Hawthorn or sleepy-hollow Geelong.....I wonder why?
